GR Research AV3 Help... Swapped Tweeter
« on: 29 Dec 2024, 06:54 pm »
Hey Everybody ;)

I recently bought a pair of used AV3 tower speakers. They appear to have original high-end parts inside (Sonicaps, Foil inductors) and the original woofers.

The tweeter was replaced with a Peerless D27TG-35-06. The speakers sound pretty good but are a little fatiguing over time. The crossover components are glued to the bracing inside the speaker. I can't read all their specs or know if I'm even seeing all of them.

I am a novice at this.

-I assume the Peerless was swapped in without changing crossover components. Is it compatible?  https://www.parts-express.com/Peerless-D27TG-35-06-1-Silk-Dome-Tweeter-264-1022?quantity=1&srsltid=AfmBOoox7j-HPmxCWm1kYZnZLgjmw5K_yo4wNqYcoMiG3Q8g2RIorML5#specs
-How will this tweeter sound different than the original?
-Is the original tweeter available?

The tweeters are not a compatible swap and will require a complete redesign of the crossover to make them work.

They also came with higher quality tweeters than what was swapped into them.

Thanks Danny. Are there any of the correct tweeters laying around your place or is there a model number that might help me find a pair somewhere on the interwebs?

I’ll also ask the previous owner if he still has them or if he did in fact swap crossover parts

I heard back from the previous owner. He has the original tweeters but one is not functioning. He did not change the crossovers.

Do you have any in stock, or is there a model that would work without changing the crossover?

Thanks

We no longer stock those tweeters.

We recently just revamped that designing using our GR Neo 3 tweeter with a waveguide. It will however, require a different front baffle.

What if someone were to, hypothetically of course, fix a new baffle onto the old AV3 baffle to accommodate the Neo 3?  Would that do the job?

Also, I would assume that this would need a hypothetical new crossover as well.
Thoughts?

The internal bracing is also placed a little differently in the N3 (the Neo 3 based version of the AV3) to accommodate the difference in spacing of the drivers. So that would need to be accounted for as well.
The crossover would also need to change.

I had an unused pair I just sent him.  He should be up and going in a week.   :thumb:
The AV3 was the first model Danny sold me waaaaay back when.   I remember they created a very nice, wide soundstage.   a
Accurate, controlled, with decently deep bass.

Thanks Scott! I’m looking forward to hearing the speakers as they were intended!
