6B SST2
« on: 17 Dec 2024, 12:31 am »
Looking for a little help, I have a 6B SST2 amp which drives the centre channel and rear surround speakers, after it was turned off for several months and put back in service I cannot get a lot of output to the right rear surround with the processor at maximum gain there is not much sound, have tried everything that narrows it down to the 6B on one channel  the other two channel work perfectly, all switches on the back are the same for each channel, hoping somebody might have an idea as to why it's like this after being shut down for a length of time

The 6B SST is a fabulous amp! I use three of them in my home theater.

The only weak point imho is the switch that selects the asymmetrical RCA or the symmetrical XLR. These switches (the same on my 9B amps) can corrode and get bad, resulting in not letting any sound through in the worst case. You can move the switch up and down a couple of times to see if this helps or changes anything.

You might have to send it in to have the switch(es) replaced. I had this done by AViTech in Vienna, since I live in Germany, on a 6B SST and a 9B SST. The 6B came originally from Indonesia and the 9B from the UK. The first might have stayed in a more humid climate for some time while the latter had been stored inappropriately, as almost all screws showed sign of corrosion.

Maybe some contact cleaning spray might help as well.

Thanks for the info, when this occurred to you did you have some sound out of the 6B but no real volume that you could control.

IIRC, on one amp the signal was constantly very quiet, on the other only higher signal levels kind of broke through. Replacing the switches fixed all those issues for me.

Thanks very much for the help, sounds exactly like mine 2 of the channels work perfectly and the third has a very low output, how difficult was it to replace the switches and did you get them from Bryston
