Treatment when LP is close to rear wall
« on: 14 Jul 2018, 02:05 am »
My LP is only 1'-2' off the rear wall. Which is better, absorption or diffusion when this close?

Absorption.

Thick absorption, like GIK 244 or Monstertraps. You can place Alpha series versions of the 244 and/or Monster but the benefits will be small at that close of a distance.

Do not use pure diffusers like the QRD, MLS type, etc... if your listening position is that close as comb filtering can occur.

Best,
Anand.

P.S. I used GIK products just for illustrative purposes. You can use the equivalent of 4 inch thick absorption or more from other manufacturers (RealTraps, Primacoustic, Vicoustic, etc...) as you see fit.

Agree absorption will be your best friend.

BAD panel is better than absorption for nearby surface.

Personal taste aside in my experience with planars are they like live rooms and dynamic speakers sound better in stuffed rooms.

GIK’s Alpha Panels mentioned above attempts to do the same by minimizing high frequency absorption above 1khz.
