computer speakers?
« on: 26 Nov 2011, 01:53 pm »
I am looking for very small computer speakers. I am looking for speakers to plug into HDMI slot on my desk top
computer. Maybe active speakers so I can boost the volume. I would like to stay under $200. I have room for a small sub under the desk. It can be a system from best buy or bought online. The room is very small ,and I am  listening to spotify.
Thanks

Any speakers that you are trying to interface with a digital audio output from a computer would have internal D/A conversion and would be actively amplified.

Although there are pairs of computer speakers / multimedia monitors that have optical and/or coaxial S/PDIF digital audio inputs or USB inputs, the only speaker systems I have seen that could accept an HDMI audio input are single, fairly wide soundbar TV speakers (with or without subwoofer).

Why do you need to interface with HDMI?  If you prefer a conventional pair of left and right speakers rather than a soundbar, do you not have either an S/PDIF digital audio output or USB port available on your computer?

There are a number of digital audio input equipped monitors.

The first one that comes to mind is the Roland MA-15D Digital Monitor (formerly Edirol by Roland, now Cakewalk by Roland).

They have both optical and coaxial S/PDIF inputs, a subwoofer output, bass and treble controls and are available in black or woodgrain.  Although it wouldn't be of concern for listening to Spotify, they are 24-bit/192KHz capable for listening to high resolution files stored on your computer (many USB speakers are limited to 16-bit/48KHz).

The best price I have seen on them is from J&R for $149 for the wood grain version.  http://www.jr.com/cakewalk/pe/CMP_MA15DCW/

For whatever reason, the black version is $179, which is what most retailers sell the MA-15D for.  http://www.jr.com/cakewalk/pe/CMP_MA15DBKCW/

Bose Companion III would be good, although the price would be around 250 and a bit out of your budget
