Basic question about Pioneer DV-47A(i)
« on: 24 Feb 2004, 02:15 am »
I have a basic question that most of you may know already.

What are the differences between Pioneer DV-47A and DV47Ai.  I am more interested in the Audio domian in terms of improvements in CD, DVD-A and SACD playback quality.  Also, were there any upgrades to the power supply?

Related question if I apply the ModWright top of the line full upgrade to my DV-47Ai would my unit sound as good as a modified DV-47i?

Also, the new  DV-563A seemingly has the same capabilities in playing everything under the sun.

How does the  DV-563A compare to DV-47A sonically? Why does it cost so much less?  Is it just a matter of decrease in manufacturer cost/production improvement?  Or is the DV-47A superior?

I think the only difference is the DVI output.

The 47 is twice as heavy; I'm sure the power supply and circuitry is much better.  Certainly the build quality is better.  I haven't ever compared the sound of the two, though.  For vid I'm sure the DVI out rocks.

Neither the 47Ai nor the 47A have DVI output. You have to get a 59AVi for DVI/HDMI output.

The 47A was supposedly a terrible sounding player. Pioneer didn't keep it around long. They fixed the problems with the 47A in the 47Ai. The 47Ai also has i-Link output, which the 47A didn't.

The 563A should be a better player than the 47A, but not the 47Ai. Can't say how great the differences are, as I've only had a 47Ai in the house.

Imersive can add a DVI output to the 47 for a modest  fee. I had mine done and it was back in less than a week and the improvement in video was impressive. That with Dan's mods made it a fantastic machine!

Well, the Asian model of the 47A & 47Ai both had digital video out. So it's not surprising that a DVI out added to a 47Ai is quick & fairly painless as the circuitry is already there. The output just needs to be installed...

47A vs 47Ai

These two units have the following in common:

Transport
Power Supply

The audio circuits are differnt and by quite a bit.  The 47A is based on Crystal DAC chips and the 47Ai uses Burr Browns.  I am not sure if both units down-sample SACD to PCM, but it is my understanding that the 47A DOES.

They are both excellent units in my opinion and both sound incredible when modified.

The 47Ai is much more closely related to the 45A and 656A.

The 563A is again closer to these than the 47A, but is a bit different yet.

Hope this helps.

PLMONROE,

Did you get the DVI upgrade from immersiveinc.com, or somewhere else. Please provide details on the product, cost, where you got it, etc.

Yes, it was done by imeresiveinc.  Seems like it was $300 - $400. Their web site has prices and particulairs (or did when I had mine done about a year ago). The modification has worked flawlessly.
