Might I suggest that captions on the gallery titles, or somewhere else, include the veneer and baffle/trim lumber choices?

(I'm really curious to know what Randy's HT1s were made with...)

I only looked at the picture of the closeup baffle shot of the center channel and it had the sort of "crotch" grain. Claro walnut is cool too!

Ah you would think so but they are actually Ropey Cherry (that darkened) and Claro Walnut baffles.

That's walnut?  I've never seen it that golden red in color before... Wow, between that and a few other Walnut examples from Jim, my impression of Walnut is heading up rapidly.

The gallery has been updated with the wood species for each speaker.

Thanks for satisfying my curiousity!

Thank you for the suggestion!

No problem!

Gordy, I saw your speakers in the raw, and I have to say I think you're going to be most impressed with them.  That burl is very nice and the Walnut (which I didn't see) looks AWESOME.  Congrats...if I had to be kicked off the SOTM, I'm glad it was either yours or Bingenito's.

Thank you Marbles!  I am so pumped right now!  Just sent Bryan a few more pics that Jim forwarded to me.  That's the first I've seen of the Walnut as well.  Jim was so enthusiastic about the piece that I knew it was going to be something very special   ... indeed!

This next week is going to seem longer than the last four months!!!

Leon,

Nice.  I see that the black woofers seem to be more popular lately.  Mine should be coming in soon and they'll be something completely different-a finish not seen before. Tamo ash with a grey-black stain. The anticipation is killing me. I haven't requested any upgrades yet and I only have a little time left to do so.  Marbles has made some suggestions to me (he says at a bare minimum to get the BH5 and bypassing caps).  How do your new speakers sound?

Joe,

I haven't heard any of the upgrades since I just have a stock pair right now, but I would agree with Rob and probably get the BH5 and cap upgarde.

Both of these upgrades should improve the sound and are relatively inexpensive (especially given how long you plan on owning the HT3's).

Jermmd,
My HT3 are being shipped today I won't see them until probability Fri. I decided to do the sonnic cap upgrade because I plan on having these speakers a very long time. From what everyone is saying this is a real good upgrade. I spoke to Jim this AM I thought my Woofer would be aluminum but he said the last shipment  from TC were all black.

Just remember to keep breathing Koiman, it's only a few more days  They look beautious, love that waterfall!

Having spent way too much time lately listening to input, output and bypass capacitor swaps in amplifiers, I know your cap upgrade to the Sonicaps was a wise move :D  and if you're anything like me you'd be second guessing yourself for the next 17 years otherwise...  Congratulations!!!

Gordy,
Thanks, I just can't wait. I am a swapping kind of guy when it comes to amps. I have several SS amps along with power amps. and love the hybrid combination of tube pre amp and SS power.  As far as the sonic caps were concerned, I new I would be kicking my self if I didn't get them, rather then wonder later on if I should have. I was inticialy go with the HT1's than I thought I might as well get what I really wanted from the beginning.

I am using a demo model Dulcet speaker that cost me something like $150. It's very good and probably one of the best bargains I've gotten in this hobby. It will become the rear center speaker when my HTC arrives.

BRJ,

I appreciate the nice comment and these speakers really are that good.

Picked up my salk HT3's and HT surround system last week. My wife stayed up with me to hook them up, ran new speaker wire and mounte the back surrounds, then played and played them.
Sound is amazing, a clarity of the highs and midrange that have to be heard to be appreciated.
Use for both 2 channel stereo and HT

Equipment:
Panasonic 65" plasmaPZ750U
Integra DTC 9.8
Halo Parasound A51
panasonic DMP -30,
Oppo DV-980 (SACD, DVD-A)
Dish DVR 622
Marantz CD 5001 (for 2 channel)
Blue jeans speaker wire
Monoprice HDMI

Halo has plenty of power to drive these HT3's, plan to add benchmark DAC for the 2 channel.
As you hopefully can see, I needed the back surrounds to mount flush high on the wall. Jim designed and built a modified HT1 with down facing port.

Long time reader 1st time poster...  I will post pictures once they arrive, but I recently placed an order with Jim for his HT2's.    :thumb:

Hopefully in the next month or so they should arrive.  I just finished hanging room treatments from ATS - wow, why did I wait so long?!  I feel much better knowing I have a better home for the HT2's!  I really enjoy music and have been saving up for over a year for new speakers.  I almost tapped out early for another manufacture but am thankful I made the financial stretch and waited it out.  I really think I am investing in art - even just based on the photos I have seen.

I am super excited to be joining the family soon.  I am located in Eugene, OR.  Not sure if any other Salk owners are in Oregon?

Well, back to my new full time job - daydreaming about my HT2's....

John

Congrats on your forthcoming HT2's!  I am also considering these along with SongTowers or QW's.  What, may I ask, was your reasoning for going for the HT2's over the QW's (since they are in the same price range)?  I am aware that the HT2s are a little more efficient, but the QW's extend a little deeper and have a "different" midrange presence due to the QW transmission cabinet effects.  If I were to purchase new speakers, it would likely come down to choosing between these two models.  I'm sure both of them are great!  Or maybe the ribbon SongTowers when/if they become available.  Hmmm...

Hi robinje,

Thank you!   :D

I actually consulted with Jim on my selection.  At the time I was looking at the HT2, SongTowers, and V3.  I mentioned to Jim my room size and current configuration along with my goals - what I wanted to improve and what I didn't like so far in my system.  I am 70% music and 30% 2-channel movies.  Which is a big pet peeve of mine, what happened to the 2-channel track on movies?!  Seriously, what % of the population even has surround sound...  I will probably give-in and do just a center channel one day...

But I would recommend reaching out to Jim - he is awesome.  Tell him what you have, what you like about it and what you don't like.

I agree with your interest on the ribbon SongTowers - very curious too but thankfully too late!  That is one of the key reasons I went with the Veracity line, I wanted to go ribbon tweets.

Best of luck and enjoy the shopping process - I know I did.

Thank you all and thanks Funkmonkey!  What do you have planned for your HT3's - as far as overall look and wood selection?

I have a new daydream (aside from a new preamp and dac).  I think it would be awesome to open a ID gallery/storefront.  Basically commission fine speakers and audio equipment from independent artists, like Jim, and present them in a fine gallery format.  It would not be designed to make money but more for supporting the artists and bringing like minds together.

Now that would be fun.  :)

The veneer I searched out was called "survivor" Rosewood.  It came in much more orange than the pictures I based my decision on, not a bad thing, just a little different coloration.  Here is a pic that Jim sent me of the actual veneer:

Hi Fluke,

Do you mind showing some more photos please?

Are the speakers hand rubbed finished?  Did it cost much more for this particular finish?  They look pretty spectacular.

Due to my limited budget I could only afford my HT2's finished in bosse pommele.  I'm not sure how they will look because I could only find a speaker partially finished in this veneer.

My speakers should arrive in about a months time because they are being shipped by sea.  I hope they sound as good as they look.

Regards

Rod

Hi Rocket - thanks!  They were finished with a gloss 85 lacquer.  The finish was part of the total and I don't believe it was hand rubbed much?  But they do look great up close and I don't know much about that part of the process.

Send me a PM with your email addy and I will send you my unboxing photos.  I am planning on taking more
HQ photos tomorrow too.  I can't resist.  :D

Is this the wood you selected?  Those will be sharp!

I'm maybe two weeks out from getting my 2 songtowers and a black songcenter.  Since we are posting veneers, mine should look something like this veneer, " PAU FERRO 715 Pau Ferro. Dashing and colorful "Bolivian Rosewood". Swirling colors ranging from reddish-tan to deep indigo."
Sigh, waiting hurts.  Great looking design there fluke!

YOWZA! I love the asymmetrical veneer. Book matching is not for me. I really like those! Hard to photograph polished surfaces, I bet they are stunning in person. Keep em coming boys.

Very nice choice of color Fishinbob. Looks great with your big-screen. Thanks for posting here. I tried to look around the corner of your pic at the assoc gear. I am a fishing fool as well. Born on a mountain and raised in a cave, fishin and HI-FI is all I crave.  aa

If you're speaking to me, Mr. Monkey, thank you.  Jason's above are a Walnut Burl.  Mine are the ever popular Babinga.  I wanted a burly, cloudy, not waterfall with deep 3d grain depth.  Jim did a great job finding the veneer.

I was speaking to you, and your welcome.  I was hesitant to ask if they were Walnut, because the color is not typical for walnut, Babinga was my second guess but then the grain wasn't like any of the "waterfall" I have seen before.  But none of my bad guessing really matters, I agree with you that Jim did an excellent job finding the veneer!  Beautiful.

Thanks evan1 and funkmonkey!
They are quilted maple with a really dark tint. I wanted nearly black speakers but with something to make the texture more interesting than just plain black. It looks great! According to Jim they should be the first pair with the new woofer and tweaked crossover too :).

Here is a b&w pic of what the texture is like, it very hard to photograph how they look because the flash has very penetrating light so this is just to give an idea:

Lots of Nice HT3 speakers are going places now that Jim has the drivers to finish them up. My V3s have arrived:

These speakers are suburb. I hear detail in music that I was not hearing before. They will play loud without distorting while being powered by the Cary Cinema 5 amp, and are also very balanced, clear and clean at low volume settings. I had Jim make some custom changes. First, you will see that the black baffle stops short similar to the Songtower instead of being full length like the other V3s. The cones under the plinths are custom black chrome ones instead of the usual ones supplied by Salk. As discussed before (and heckled by Dennis) the center channel is a smaller sealed version of the V Monster center channel, so it will fit our planned cabinet arrangement. I don't know what the low end performance loss is between my CC and the full VM, but I still have an HSU VTF3 sub for HT duty if I think its needed. I cut the VTF3 off when I set the V3s up and have not missed it yet, Even when I played the openning scenes from TOPGUN at -0- db on the Yamaha, (Had the wife yell "turn it down") I don't feel like anything is missing or distorted.

Jim, Chalk up another happy Salk Signature Sound customer.

Miney, the veneer is red oak, done in a golden honey tone finish. They match nicely with the red oak wood room trim and red oak furniture we have in that room.

Can you tell us what you use for receiver and amplification?

Thanks.

Post by: Atlplasma on 13 Jan 2009, 09:08 pm
Thanks. The media center is a custom unit made a local craftsman here in Atlanta. He does great work (like taking the unit back and adding the lower shelf when I needed more storage).  :D

Before the Salks arrived, I was using a Yamaha RX-V2700 in a preamp configuration with three Outlaw Model 200 monoblocks. This configuration drove three M&K 750 speakers, which you can see in the pictures. I'll probably convert the L/R M&Ks to rear speaker duty, at least temporary until my budget (and the economy) recovers. Jim is working on a SongCenter RT but had to make some adjustments to accommodate the height of the media center shelf. (Imagine trying to ask any other speaker manufacturer to make their speaker enclosure .25 inches shorter.)

Interestingly, and I just shared this over on the AVS Salk thread, I've been switching between the Yamaha and a 45-year-old Eico ST-70 during music sessions. For music, I'm finding the Eico much more enjoyable. The Yamaha has a "Pure Direct" that claims to deliver playback with the least circuitry. I like the Pure Direct option but still find it inferior to the Eico tube sound, and I'm leaning toward using the Yamaha/Outlaw setup for movie playback and the Eico whenever I want to play tunes--even though swapping speaker cables is an inconvenience.

No big shock in a well designed tube amp (whether designed or built today or 50 years ago) sounding better than a current SS receiver!   :duh:

I only would have been shocked if it turned out the other way.

I'm becoming a believer in the "tube sound" so many people seem to like. Maybe what's shocking - at least to me - is how good the Eico sounds against a setup that retailed for something like $2500. The other thing that surprise me was that I was able to take an Eico that hadn't been played in at least 10 years and recap and tube it, and it WORKED.  :green:

You have to understand, my electrical skills are pretty minimal (but I'm learning). I was also lucky that a tube veteran from the Yahoo Eico group volunteered to test the thing out before I flip the switch. It just worked out great.

funkmonkey,  What veneer/finish are your speakers?

OK, I found it on page two.  That is what I get for starting at the last page and working backwards.

The veneer is "Survivor Rosewood".

"Survivor"??
Title: Re: Members Gallery, Pictures of Salk speakers in members homes
Post by: funkmonkey on 5 Feb 2009, 07:46 pm
The "Survivor" rosewood got it's name because it came from a Brazilian rosewood tree that survived a fire at some point in it's life.  There is no doubt that the same tree would have yeilded a beautiful veneer even if it hadn't been through the fire, but because of that fire, there are additional dark grey/black charcoal areas in the veneer.  I feel very lucky to have been able to find this unique veneer, and I am constantly awed by it's beauty.  Jim did a fantastic job with the raw veneer.  I know from experience that that is no easy task.

The pictures that Jim shot and a few more details can be found here:http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=63662.0 (http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=63662.0)

funkmonkey, Thanks for the explanation.  They truly are beautiful. I see lots of pics here that I like.  I am especially attracted to the walnut and the "larger than life" pics of the clear curly cherry ones. Hope to find some HT3s to see/hear in the Sacramento, CA area.

Song Towers QWT, Song Center, and SongSurround1 in Black Oak with grain visible and a satin lacquer top coat.

Not ideal for placement but tweaked now and they sound amazing for Home Theater.

At present I cannot improve on the width.

I used two Real Organized 15" White Heavy Duty Brackets Item #: 48989 / Model: 25224PHLLG from Lowes. They come in white but I painted them black. These are very durable shelf brackets.

They are fastened to the studs. The black shelves were obtained from Home Depot and they are a Rubbermaid brand. I regret not installing three brackets due to the slight sag in the middle but the boards are screwed to the brackets underside so they are not going anywhere.

Jim Salk added two inserts for me at the back of the center so I could restrain it from falling hopefully. I used coated wire and looped it around each wall bracket and used aluminum crimp type ferrules to fasten the cable as a loop through the eye bolts in the center.

Hoping this helps.

I have been debating between mounting my LCD display on the wall(raising LCD 9"(height of center channel) and putting the center channel speaker where the LCD used to sit.
Or using your method...

Hey Funkymonkey,
If your talking about the speakers, they are Burled Walnut veneer with Solid Claro Walnut baffles.
The floor is in the basement on a concrete slab. I couldn't use real wood. It is Armstrong laminated flooring. The color is  exotic Noce Milan 4.72" beveled planks, even in person it looks like real wood.
Goes nice the walnut cabinets and rack.

Bill -

I am 99% sure those are waterfall bubinga with the hand rubbed high gloss finish. I've seen a lot of bubinga (since I ordered one of my systems in the same wood) and judging by Jim's photos and the forum here, is probably the most popular non-standard veneer he makes.

I promised myself to catch-up with pending “to do” prior to year end. This post was on the list…These HT3’s are finished in Ambrosia Maple and were Jim’s personal pair for a while. I have my eyes on them when the original sale did not go through earlier this year. Called Jim and told him to hold them for me – drove up to Livonia, MI for the AKFEST this past May, attended the show, had a great time and brought these speakers back home with me (no FedEx truck here)!
As for how they sound…all I can say is that they are one of the best sounding speakers that I have heard at any price for a long time. This includes reproducing both digital and vinyl sourced material! I asked Jim to build me a second pair of bottom plinth as I wanted the speakers to seat a little higher.
More pictures in my gallery.

I finally got around to taking some pictures of my system since moving everything to there new room.  The room started as a two-room add-on to the house we bought a couple of years ago.  I removed a couple walls and turned it into a dedicated music/entertainment room.  The room is roughly 15' 9" x 22' x 8' but narrrows for a bit in the middle due to the fireplace on the other side of the wall and a built-in cabinet.

It is still a work-in-process as I have more room treatments to due and  still working on furniture, art, etc.  It will get there someday!

Thanks for all of the comments.  :D

The ST's are in the standard Cherry veneer.  The stand that the equipment is on is actually a coffee table  :icon_surprised:  I bought it quite a few years ago during a blow out sale with the purpose of it being a AV stand, it has done well.  The biggest weakness is it doesn't hold much gear.

Snapped off a few when I went home for lunch.  One of the few perks of living within 5 miles of work.  Note that the decorating has nothing at all to do with me, from the colors on the wall, furniture, and artwork.  The only thing I own is the audio, video and TV stand.  The only thing I approve of other than my own stuff is the couch.  That's some good couch right there.

They are not at a point at all, so no.  the spikes on the sub are much more to a point.  that said, I would not drag them on a wood floor, and i have always lifted them when tweaking placement.

I, too, have mine directly on the floor and I think they sound fine.  I hope to get a friend over tonight to help me with the spikes.  I don't want to slide them around on the hardwoods.  I already gouged the floor since receiving the HT3s trying to convince Julie we needed to rearrange furniture.

Chris, I have attached some felt pads on the speaker base so I can move them around easily without scratching the floor. Why am I moving the speakers.. still trying to figure out the best placement for them. Another HT-3 owner that I know also is keeping them on the floor directly.

highfilter, thank you.

If this is the right place to ask: How far apart should these speakers be placed from each other?

Thanks.

[snip]

Writeface,

I asked Jim about it, and he said that the spikes in this instance would be more for aesthetics than functional, but he did recommend that they be decoupled from the floor when not using spikes for permanent placement.  He provided me with a link to an inexpensive router mat that would functionally suffice.

I checked with three friends today, and all were otherwise engaged so I’m still on the floor.  Julie is still seeing the chiropractor for her back and I don’t want to have her help in attaching the spikes.  I want to try the spikes and see if I hear any difference in my environment (which is much like yours…still untreated).  I also want to see aesthetically how they blend in.

Incredible sound thus far, even though I am aware of some muddled frequencies due to room limitations.  The soundstage needs some adjustment for depth, also.  I think it will take another 4-6 weeks to fine tune, given I’m still a working stiff…

Chris

Jim made this custom A/V cabinet for me. I found it really hard to locate a stock A/V cabinet that would accommodate the HT3 Center channel as well act as a TV stand. After the cabinet was made I changed my mind and found a way/location to hang the TV on the wall.

My Dish network DVR gets really really hot inside the cabinet when the doors are closed! -- so unbelievably hot (and noisy) that it shuts down. When summer gets here it surely will get fried. I have to hurry up and  install an exhaust fan in the back wall of the shelf.

It's a 2' x 3' mat that can be cut to size.

Jim said it would serve to decouple the HT3s from the floor somewhat.

ttsakai,

Its great to see you've posted photos of your system/room.  The photos look good and I will attest to the fact that your system sounds as great as it looks!  For me this is the real deal.  Speaker placement, acoustic treatment, dedicated room and you have your equipment rack to one side of the room.  Placing your equipment away from the middle of the speakers grows the sound stage in deepth and height, IME.

Well done sir.

Chris, Thanks for the link.

Tracy,
Very very nice set-up!

I auditioned the HT-3s at Tracy's home in Jan and instantly decided to buy them. I wish I could buy his room too:)

I especially like the ceiling treatment that you've done for your HT-3's. Too may forget to treat this very important part of the imaging sound stage.  :thumb:

It's a 2' x 3' mat that can be cut to size.

http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=10696&filter=router%20mat

Jim said it would serve to decouple the HT3s from the floor somewhat.

Chris

ctouhey, writeface,

If either of you try the router mat for sound isolation from the floor, please post your thoughts on its impact (for good or ill). I have an asymmetric setup with one speaker on the hardwood floor and one on a floor rug. Both speakers have isolation pucks under them from Herbie's audio lab, and I feel the pucks do a reasonable job of decoupling them from my 120 year old hardwood floor which can have 1 or 2 fairly strong resonances. I have entertained slipping some granite slabs under them, but not sure if the better half will accept that... she has made a few concessions so far, so I try to keep the peace by making my audio-related changes slowly and as aesthetically acceptable as possible :)

Thanks, Stew

I tried the spikes on hardwood and liked them.  We have an approximately 11" x 14" inch rug to cover about 2/3 of the area.  We need to add more to the open area.  Wife likes the spikes and no grilles...totally opposite of what she said before we got the speakers.

I've owned sealed speaker designs for years and would like to try something different. How do you like the Archos open baffle sound and can you describe it? Did you look into the Linkwitz Orion, prior to buying the Archos? Are open baffle's difficult to set-up, because I've read their sweet spot can be rather confined?

thanks! I like the look of it. and it sounds very good. The speakers are 1/2 in and 1/2 out of the nook (now). I think I'm getting great imaging in most of the range but I'm getting big bass bump. I have measured the room and it's bass-heavy with a particular mode at 40Hz. I'm a little worried about that one.

Agreed.  The panels on the back wall look great.  But those LMS Ultras capture my attention even more so.  Is it advantageous for imaging to place the subs like you have them (for music listening)?

It is supposed to, but I'm not certain it does.  They are run in true stereo as well.  Easily the best bass I've heard though.  My setup is 99% for music.  It just happens to do rather well for home theater too.

Og, do you think that the plants that you have behind the speakers help with the sound?   My speakers have been in three different rooms. They sounded best in a room with some plants behind them in a similar room as yous. Although it was also a situation where the speakers were further from the wall. Just curious on you opinion.

What type of speaker feet are you using?

Nice job

Wait until you see the awkward room I am setting up in these new digs.  It will be fugly.  A combination room between 2 channel and HT.  yuck!  And dimensionally challenged.  Photos next week after I get the shelves finished this weekend and then begin hauling gear out of boxes.

I moved to a new home back in December.  Single and 27, so WAF was not an issue for me  :thumb:  My cell phone doesn't really capture the true look of my speakers, but the pics should at least give you an idea.

Og, do you think that the plants that you have behind the speakers help with the sound?   My speakers have been in three different rooms. They sounded best in a room with some plants behind them in a similar room as yous. Although it was also a situation where the speakers were further from the wall. Just curious on you opinion.

Supposedly the plants add some diffusion, but I have no idea if they really work for that. We put the plants there to break up the look of the acoustic panels and add a bit of color. I never A/B tested the sound difference. It would have been hard to tell at the time since I was messing with the SS8's open grill and poly fill stuffing when we added the plants.

Thanks for all the positive comments!

I'm not exactly sure of the difference between a house & a cottage. It's on 5 acres (can't see any neighbors), 1.5 stories, insulated shop with attic, small pond, storage shed, rock fire pit, large deck on first floor and smaller on 2nd floor, private mountain bike trail, an outdoor RC track, 3 room, 2 bath, and it's less than 20 minutes from work.  The wood seems to help dampen the sound.

Here's a few more pics.  Sorry for the off topic post.

Very nice Coke

You forgot to mention the excellent stone work
Now fill those shelves with some lps

I would think the high ceiling would play a role in the dampening of the sound

Being single does indeed have it's perk

Nice place Coke!

I've had a hell of a time finding a good room in my house to set up my 2 channel system, but here's what it looks like now:

You'd think in a 3400 sf house I'd have a better room I could put them in, but they've ended up in the living room.  I'm not happy but that's where my wife wants them!  Unfortunately as well I don't have much time anymore to sit and enjoy listening to music.

I prefer to have them in the living room. Mine get a lot more use throughout the day than they would in a dedicated listening room.

Just moved to a new house and had to split up my 7.1 into a 2.0 and 5.1.  Still haven't setup the 5.1 but, here is the 2.0 setup in my living room/office/dinning room/kitchen.  Unfortunately, I do have to close all the blinds for a serious listen.

Updated photos to show how nicely the STs get along with the 65" plasma that forced its way between them. Also shown are some new DIY audio cables. Solid silver PTFE insulated speaker cables and solid bleached cotton insulated RCAs for CD audio. This was my first time assembling cables - very happy with the end result. Sliders are from Herbie's.

Getting there! One more amp to try, some wire management, but Jasper approves! I'll get rid of the two acoustic treatment stands behind speakers after I make some cable riser stands. It is much easier to clean under cables if they are off the floor. I like to keep power cables away from IC's too. The subs shore up the lower frequencies as this room is open to the main level that add another 25 x 20 feet. Like 25-35Hz. They don't even come in with most music.

Cable risers, I made some unique ones out of wood to separate power from signal.  Are you handy with woodworking tools?

Thanks Red! The old house it was, but that was an old post war (II) house/neighborhood with poor power. We are in a relatively new subdivision now and the power is better. I've never tried it without here. Amps are plugged direct into wall. It's just filled with what Shunyata called.....Stardust. It looks nice though and has plenty of outlets for my gear. I inherited it from a dear friend that passed away so I doubt I'll ever part with it.

I like to think I am, :o I built the heavy plinth for my Lenco turntable.  I'd like to see the risers you made. I bought a wood shelf bracket that I was going to trim to fit against the molding with slots in rear and front. Similar to the acoustic treatment stands I made. I have a south and west wall system setup I can make and didn't want to fix them in place.

Here are my newly refinished songtowers. I started a thread about these elsewhere but since this is the place for Salk pics I thought i'd post here as well. I've had my songtowers for a few years but they were originally finished in satin black. However, some problems occurred with the finish and I sent them back to Jim to have new cabinets made w/ zebrawood under a light black dye. The center and the surrounds are still all satin black.

My system consists of:

Speakers: Salk Songtowers, Songsurrounds, and Songcenter
Sub: Epik Legend (BASH 300 plate amp replaced the defective original)
Receiver: Onkyo TX-SR707
Analog Preamp: Parasound Classic 2100
Power Amp: NAD C270
Universal Player: Oppo BDP-83
Computer System DAC: Halide DAC
Turntable: Clearaudio Concept w/ Concept MC
Phono Pre: Musical Surroundings Phenomena II
Room Treatments: Subdude, GIK, and DIY
Cables: Blue Jean, Monoprice, Audioquest
TV: Panasonic TC-P65ST60 Plasma

All in all, not a bad sounding system. The NAD gives plenty of warmth. I like that, but really interested to hear an Odyssey amp in my system. Would also love to try the Nova Phenomena as well. I still enjoy tweaking around with it. The only problem I have now is I enjoy looking at the speakers just as much as I do listening to them  :icon_lol:

So I spent about 4 hours last weekend repositioning my Soundscape 8's in accordance with the Sumiko procedures. This repositioning resulted in a noticeable improvement in the bass extension and overall dynamics. What's comical is the location of the speakers changed only a few inches from where I originally set them up.

Austin,

Thanks and to be honest I don't know if there's any sonic difference. However, with the Sound City outriggers, I now have the ability to perfectly level the speakers or change the rake angle if I desire, with the twist of the adjustment nobs.

My father recently passed away, and my brother and I have had to divide his posessions between us.   My brother doesn't really care for audio equipment, so he got my dad's Klipsch, Yamaha, and Rythmik system, and I got his Salk & AVA system.  In 28 years, the day my dad got his Salk speakers was probably the happiest I had ever seen him.  Every time I listen to the speakers now; I remember the joy they brought him.

I've placed the system in my bedroom.  It's composed of Songtower RTs, AVA insight amp and preamp, and an eastern electric DAC.

Thanks Jack!  The metal pucks are repurposed top of tube end caps from a VTI audio rack. I had a double wide VTI rack with some heavy gear on them. The sharp points VTI uses punctured a tiny hole in ten of the caps. I purchased replacement caps from VTI before selling the rack, like $3 each IIRC.

I had some 3/8" thick oak wood trim lying around. I drilled out round biscuits with a 1 & 3/8" hole saw. (1/4" thick would not protrude far enough out; the edges of cap would touch floor). I used construction adhesive to glue the biscuits into bottom of end caps. I attached felt pads to the bottoms so they are easy to slide around without marring the floor.

My Songtowers are about 80 inches apart, 20 inches from the back wall and 8 feet from the PLP.  The room is actuall 20 x 20 with an L-shaped sofa separating the halfs (you can see part of it).

Any thoughts on the speaker separation or distance from the wall?

What's the motivation for putting the tweeters on the outside?  Is it typically to increase the soundstage for situations where the speakers are close together?

Thanks for  your thoughts! Chas

TJHUB,

Did you get rid of the subs in the process of moving?  Just curious what happened to those beasts!

I now have 2 separate setups, the subs are now home theater only in another room.

Greetings!  I'm new to the forum but have enjoyed seeing your wonderful systems.  I've had my HT2-TL for several months now and am enjoying every minute.  My space is a bit odd, but I've found a spot in the basement that allows me to coax excellent sound in spite of less than ideal circumstances.  Jim and his team have been amazing from day one.

Below are a pair of Song Towers that we use for tv and casual music in our living-dining room area.

In my previous house these were the rear channels in an all Song Tower home theater setup.

They sound outstanding just being powered by a Denon 3808Ci receiver, which is fed by an Intel NUC pc running Jriver.

Look great Tic Tac. Since you are living in Vn, Look like you have spent a lot of money, time and effort to get a system like that. Welcome to Salk family.

I've been away for a while and am just catching up with threads. Some really nice set ups here. I'm redoing my home theater this winter and wonder about putting a TV over the fireplace. George, do you use your fireplace? Is it a problem for your setup?
By the way, what are you doing in New Hampshire?

Greetings.  Just wanted to share the joy with a few words and a couple pix of the subwoofers that Jim Salk made for me.

They are the Salk version of Rythmik F25, which is a sealed dual 15"- in bamboo to match the finish of my mains.  My room is about 8000 cubic feet and wide open to other parts of the house; I wanted Rythmik, sealed, with enough power to fill my room... and pretty.  I figured I wouldn't be able to afford Salk/Rythmik but turns out he really doesn't charge much of a premium compared to Rythmik, for what you get in beauty (and more robust construction).

Also I picked them up thinking to save freight, and the trip turned out to be quite a treat!  Between Jim, Mary and two staff members whose names I was too excited to remember, I received a tour of the entire shop with lots of beautiful speakers in various build stages, a quick tutorial on set-up and polishing, and a perfect loading job (they just barely fit in my car, I'm sure I would've scratched them).  Also my 3-yr-old son got introduced to ping pong and his demands were met regarding reading two books to him.  It really was an overwhelmingly pleasant experience and so great of all the folks at Salk to spend the time with us.

Now that the subs have been in my house for a couple of weeks... I'm not good at fluffy audio words, but I couldn't be happier with their musicality, power, and looks.  They fill up the whole room, even at low volume levels (we listen low enough in the evenings that I used trigger cables); we notice now that two notes are different or that one note is actually two quick ones or just hear/feel sound that wasn't present before; and now that I've got them dialed in I understand what "disappear" means.  I did follow an REW tutorial to do a rudimentary accuracy test, and the way they're set up now they're +/-3 db from 14hz to 80hz.  Some of the things that sound way better now: Kodo (Japanese drum band), Interstellar, Drive, Rango, and all the other music and movies that we've played!  Thanks Jim!

Hopefully this thread is an OK place for the above - here are the pix!!

Beautiful subs there - tell us more about the veneer please?

Thx

Post by: taigovinda on 17 Mar 2017, 01:03 am
Thanks for the comments, guys.

@Miney:  The subs are bamboo with a bit of a reddish tint to it and a sturdy finish.  My pictures don't do justice - they are beautiful.  Jim had advised to go with veneer - which would've looked the same and saved a few dollars - but in the end I went with bamboo plywood instead.  They weigh 160 lbs each; MDF (with veneer) would've been probably more like 250.  Jim had forgot to take pictures before I picked them up; I sent him some that if he can clean up well enough, maybe he will end up putting one on his website.

I did see some veneered speakers while I was at his shop that were really amazing.  It was pretty cool to see them partway through the process and not fully assembled; not sure how they get the veneer onto extreme curves, but they do.

I had been waiting to get some treatments up before posting pics of our prized Salk based system.
When we started a gut and rebuild of an older and problematic (from an audio standpoint) basement, I had no idea it would turn out as well as it did.
Despite a 7' ceiling and a lot of reflective surfaces, it has all come together very nicely, and sounds incredible.

Thanks!  The reason is I wanted my 2-channel setup completely separated from everything else.  The TV is mostly used for news, so no need for anything more.  We watch TV and movies in the family room on a 120” projection system, surround sound, and dual 18” subs.  :thumb:

Recognize your set up; you had the Salk Silks in there before; did you sell the monitors or are you using them in another capacity?  They sounded very good on your youtube posts.

Marbles,
I am new to this forum but have been on audiogon for years as falconquest. I am here because of Salk speakers. I am considering the HT3's but would like to hear them. I live in Michigan and would like to touch base with MaxCast. Since I'm new I really can't do anything here. Is there a chance you could facilitate me getting in touch with him? Would really like to get his thoughts on his HT3's and perhpas arrange a listening session. Thanks in advance for your help.

I love my Salk speakers. I don't see myself ever upgrading/changing to something else.
Also, the photo doesn't go justice to the birdseye maple with orange dye.

Nice Walleye!  And that system looks pretty great also!  Those look like GIK Acoustics panels?  How do you like them?  I'm looking at those also (if GIK).

They are GIK’s and I like them. Great company to work with and well made. However, I have the speakers well away from side walls, almost five feet from front wall and I use Anthem ARC for DSP below 500 hz so if I removed the panels people may or may not notice a change in the sound. They are, to me, just a little icing on the cake.

Perfect - great to hear!  Salk speakers deserve the icing on the cake.  I tried to talk with somebody at the GIK booth at AXPONA but they were always involved with somebody, which was actually good to see.  I'll check out the GIK online tools when I get that far.
