Title: new 'bookshelf' speaker needs a name?
Post by: Daedalus Audio on 20 Feb 2011, 05:43 pm
I'm finishing up the first set of a new model here and am pretty excited about this.  like any new baby it needs a name, so I'm open to suggestions....
the details:

it's a three way based on one of my pro monitors, using the Daedalus 8", a custom built 5" and the Eton tweeter which I use in other audio systems. the crossover is  voiced for a slightly more 'British' sound, a little extra body.
solid wood with BB ply baffle & rear, mirror image pair with 12 deg. angle on the front.  cabinet size is 25.5" X 11" x12.75" with a front port, so it can be used as a rear speaker or even on a .... bookshelf
btw the impetus for this has been building a complete Daedalus 5.2 system for a customer!

Look at lists of names for cars (tons spent on them), babies (new/wild ones come out everyday), and paint colors (must be the fumes, but these are the "best").   :icon_lol:

Icarus is good. If you were going to follow the classical Greek references, them we will have to rename the DA-R Ma. Whatever happened there Lou. Should have been the Hector or Agamemnon, following on from the Ulysses.

DA-RMb, DA-RMm (Reference Monitor mini). that is if you wanted to stick with the abbreviation code style for all except the mighty Ulysses.

yes DA-RMa was a divergence, I have a sitting meditation practice and hence the pun on Dharma.

I'd like to follow the Greek mythology, was thinking Muse for the bookshelf, afraid the crash and burn connotations of Icarus may not be auspicious.... but still Icarus is a temptation...

I would have to agree with Lou on avoiding "Icarus" - to those that are familiar with the story it would not evoke a positive/success or anything to do with music either.

I do like the name Muse. Quite a lot actually.

The Siren, Odin, Thor, etc are all good options which in my mind would be reserved as an option for the rumored full range reference that may appear in the future as the model above the Ulysses down the road...

There are two companies in the audio industry named Muse, this may create some confusion.

Hi AudioFan KJ,the name (Thor)is already taken. It's a kit by Seas speaker company  designed  by Dr. Joseph D'Appolito. It looks like 2 8 inch woofers with the tweeter in the middle and is 45 1/2 inches high, looking again they might be 6 1/2 inch woofers. It's a transmission line thats tapered and filled with Dacron. They also have a speaker kit called the Odin,Froy and Loki.Go to Madisound on Google and you can see them in the on line catalog..........take care...Mark Korda

Since this speaker would seem to be of the same family (i.e. likely to be paired with) the DA series how about something like the DA-1.1RM (as in "rear [channel] monitor" or "reference monitor"). Or you could let Michael name them since he created the problem to begin with!
Title: Re: new 'bookshelf' speaker needs a name?
Post by: Daedalus Audio on 25 Feb 2011, 06:26 am
well it looks like everybody and their brother has used Muse even a line of speakers out there... so that one's dead.  I really would like to stay with the Greek mythology, actually have another model also coming out and the working name on that is Athena.

continuing the DA-1 series gets confusing, I think I've tapped that one out.

I could strech to Roman mythology if needed  :icon_lol:

Hi, Ok, why the British sound, why not make it have no sound of its own? Any idea of price?

Now the name, Pan. By the way, I think Athena is already used by another speaker company. Sounds familiar somewhere.

I guess that's why I suggested Icarus at the beginning.  The definition is perfect and I figured the name probably isn't taken.  You're correct in that you don't want to pick a name of something that's out there already as some can get silly with lawsuits.  Bose sued Thiel for naming a model 2.2 years back and Thiel changed it to 22.  I find it amusing that some companies are that naive to think that some other company is trying to profit from their reputation vs. anyone would reasonable audio knowledge knows what the real story is about.

A classic example of this when Subway (the sandwich place) threatened lawsuits on other sandwich places that use the term "footlong".  Give me a break, as if they are the first people to coin the phrase.  These lawsuits are getting out of hand.
Back to audio, I like the name Icarus also.

well I said "slightly more British sound". all speakers have a 'sound' to some degree. like all our speakers these will very much be neutral and transparent.  the crossover is a bit different from my other current home systems, in some ways similar to the original DA-1 but with much better execution.  these will be almost all poly caps in the crossover and the cost between $3200- $3600 pair with  grills.

Icarus does seem to be getting many votes....  Pan is a good one also!

thanks much for the ideas!

Congrats on the new speaker Lou. Any pictures? Specs? Or did I miss something.

pics will be up in a week or so.
basic specs are 3-way, 95db, can handle high power but very stable 8ohm load so will work very well with SET. XO is almost all poly, so very fast. higher hand-off between the 8" and 5" than my other systems (similar to the original DA-1) so it will have very nice body in the vocal range, very forgiving and should mate well with mid-priced source and amps etc.
25.5"h X 11" w X 13"deep  with 12.5degree compound angle at the front. also front vent so it can be wall mounted as a rear speaker etc.
thanks,
lou

I'm embarrassed to say that other projects seem to keep pushing this new model to the back burner....
I'm very focused right now on the new Argos which WILL debut @ RMAF, also the new cases for the Purity preamps (photos soon), new active crossover for the BOW etc... but the big drain lately has been expanding the shop size.
I had the opportunity to lease the adjoining unit which almost double my space! ultimately this will make production and testing much more streamlined and efficient but for now it means seven days a week of work.

so it will be the winter at the earliest before I can revisit the Pan model, and I may still opt for en even smaller true bookshelf design instead.

thanks everyone for your patience,
lou

Great, I look forward to seeing you and listening to the Athena's - I've heard some wonderful comments from owners.  I am considering these speakers in combination with a Deware Tori MKIII amplifier and CSP-2 preamplifer, if I change up my current SET based system (Decware SE84CS EX amplifier & Eastern Electric MiniMax linestage preamp).

NB,
Consider the Modwright LS-100/ Decware Torii combo as well. I ran this last year and it's astounding. I have sold the Decware since I'm moving about for the next year or so, but I plan on ordering the V-Cap version Of the Torii ASAP. LS-100 is great, especially if you want a headphone amp or phono board (I haven't heard Modwrights DAC board yet). Just my experience.

I just stumbled in here, but as a casual observer I like the first three ideas that were mentioned.

I'm not really a fan of Icarus, Siren, or Muse. Things didn't turn out well for Icarus, a "Siren" makes you think of things you'd really rather not listen to for very long, and "Muse" is too generic and overdone.

Greetings to everyone. I've been a proud owner of the Ulysses for a while now, and I have nothing but good things to say about Lou and his speakers. I tend to be more a reader than a poster, but I guess there's a first time for everything.

Recently, I had a friend over to listen to my system, and he fell in love with the Daedalus sound (let's face it, it's tough not to). He asked me if Daedalus made any bookshelf speakers that he could use in a secondary system in a small room. I remembered reading about Pan, so I figured I'd post a quick query to see if this project was finally off the ground, or if it's still in the design phase. I'm sure Lou's been busy with the new Orpheus (which I'd love to hear one day), but I imagined it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Thanks!

Recently I decided to go ahead with this project and am actually pretty excited about it. we have finished the design and will be building some in the next batch!

the cabinets will be about 25" tall X 11" wide , a three way design (same drivers as my other home audio speakers). we have worked on the integration so that even though it is a 3-way it will have point source imaging like a small 2-way system.  the sensitivity will be about 95db.    at this time I am looking at a price of $4400 a pair including grills. the cabinet construction and finish including solid walnut baffles will be the same as my other home speakers.  lastly this model will be called Pan, (continuing with the Greek mythology)

I do not plan on doing stands as there are many after market ones and people are likely to want something unique to there own needs.

should have photos in about two months.

yes, they will be very well suited as near field monitors.
there really is a need for a higher quality near field monitor than what is commonly used...

Many of the "pro-audio" studio monitor speakers built for mixing are individually powered. Will yours have that option?

I feel that one of the reasons those type of studio monitors sound so bad is that they use internal amplifiers (of questionable quality) and electronic crossovers, so no they will not be powered. I know that can be convenient for a small studio but that is a compromise i don't care to make.

Hi Lou.  How deep do you think Pan will go -- mid 40's?  I could never afford your floorstanders (despite my attempts to save money), and I think this opens up your speakers to a whole new group of music lovers.  I bet many will start here, and move up the chain as finances permit.  It's a good thing you increased your workshop space.  I'm pretty excited, frankly.

Very cool, Lou, thanks for the info. I'll be sure to pass it along.

Abstractly they strike me as a somewhat smaller version of the DA-RMa's. I'm not sure if the DA-RMa's are suited for near-field listening as the Pan's seem to be, but do you see a clearcut "guideline" based on, say, room size or listening style where one might be more suitable than the other?
