Title: Capacitor recommendations for Newform 645
Post by: Starchild on 23 Aug 2015, 01:55 pm
Hi Jeff,

I'm contemplating upgrading the capacitors for the ribbon crossover in my Newform 645 speakers.  I've been using Mundorf  Supremes with a combined value of 11uf for about 7 years.  As I continue to tweak my system and set up, I find that I'd like to get a little more transparency and air.  I'm not adverse to going to the Mundorf Silver/Oil or even the Silver/Gold/Oil but I wanted to survey the field a bit first.  There are a lot of caps that have popped up on my radar such as Dueland, Obbligato and the like.  What kind of feedback are getting from Newform owners who have purchased crossover caps from you?  I've also heard of folks mixing caps e.g. a Mundorf Supreme with a Silver/Oil.  What are your thoughts?

Thanks,
Mike

My apologies for the late reply!  The Mundorf Silver/Oil straight, and the S/O stacked with Sonicap G1 will improve both transparency and air.  The Silver/Gold/Oil will be tad richer and warmer than straight S/O.  Most of the Duelund RS, VSF, etc... would be a nice improvement, but if you are willing to spend that kind of coin, go with the Jupiter Copper.  After our 20% off, they are a better deal as well.  If you are willing to change the low pass, I can offer you a better XO.  The high pass cap would change to a 12uF.

I don't want to go quite that far.  I was thinking about the S/G/O because it was my understanding I could do it incrementally.  That is since I use a 1uf and a 10uf together to form an 11uf crossover,  I could replace the thed 1uf Supreme with a 1 uf S/G/O and realize an incremental improvement.  I'm not familiar with Jupiter.  How are their HT Flat Stacks?

The problem is, while the Supreme is musical and relaxed, I could not say that it has the last word in detail, transparency, and air.  I would go as far as to say that the Supreme may not be a good match for that ribbon.  Simply adding a 1uF SGO would not yield the desired results vs. cost.  Especially considering you seem to be working on a budget.  If you insist on bypassing the 10uF Supreme, try the Supreme SO instead.  I am still standing by my earlier statement.

Hi Jeff,

I understand what you'er saying and you certainly understand that I'm on a budget.  The Jupiter Copper is too rich for my blood.   How is the the Jupiter HT Flat stacks as an alternative?

Thanks,
Mike

The HT Flat is a fine cap, but would not be my first or second choice for that ribbon.  It would probably be a bit polite.  The VT Flat is a better sounding cap, but it would have the same character.
