I'm a bit confused. Which is the input and output between the tape playback and tape rec?

On most gear, 'tape playback' would be an input and 'tape rec' would be the equivalent of 'line out' (but before volume control).

Funny that it's been so long since I taped anything I'm not at all sure.  I often think I should have kept my old three head Pioneer deck, it was a beast.  When I had it serviced years ago my repairman gushed about the build quality and advised me to never get rid of it.  Oh well.

On a pre amp, record would be out and playback would be in.
