Another one of the greats has gone.
He always made me think of Leon Russell, I guess piano and same era being the connection.
Thank you for the music you made.

Steve-
I found out a few years ago that some Dr. John fans considered Leon to have 'ripped off' Dr. John's vocal style. (John had said that some people in N.O. were "lighting candles on Leon".) I had never made that connection, but now that I think aqbout it, I guess they both shared a gravelly vocal tone, but that's about it.

Saw Dr. John live about 5 or 6 years ago. RIP.

Truly sad news. Just heard it on the tube. I very vividly remember my introduction to Dr. John, in a dorm room on the south side of Chicago late one night in '68. Gris Gris had just been released, and was a mind mender. Been a fan ever since. He wrote a lot of great music, of many types. Was fortunate to see & speak with him very briefly in a smallish Jazz dinner club in Seattle many years back. Very nice man, great pianist, his music will be missed. Rest in Peace Mac.

I've been a Dr, John fan for many years. I saw him at the Waldorf Astoria in 1996 at the Stereophile Hi-Fi show. He had Futureman (Roy Wooten) in his band that night. Helluva show.

RIP Mac......

I've seen him several times over the years. Always a knock out performer.
"I Walk on Gilded Splinters" (Gilded splinters being rays of starlight) from Gris Gris is one of the most astonishing and daring pieces conceived and recorded, a 90 degree turn from anything recorded previously, even for the wild 60s. It positively lit up late night underground radio in the late 60s. "Walk through the fire, fly through the smoke, see my enemies on the end of a rope". Not exactly peace and love, but Mac conjured it his way.

He made many, many more wonderful works.
A truly great, one of a kind musician, but much more than that. He was dedicated to keeping great legacy music and culture alive for future music lovers.
"Goin' Back to New Orleans" is an amazing 1992 collection of 100+ year old songs that would never get airplay today but are wonderful and amazing. Well worth looking for, among many others.
Keep walking on those splinters, Mac.
Another giant gone. Who will step up?
