Joe Byrd and Field(s) Hippies, American Metaphysical Circus
What a great pic of WC Fields. What's the story behind the photo and album?
There's no connection between Joe Byrd and Fields, that I know of, I was just arsin' around - which P-man generously occasionally allows me to do - and riffing off P-Man's earlier post of the 'Fields' album. However, I do very much like the Fields photo and plan to use it as my avatar. I love Fields. The Joe Byrd album is one that survived, it's an acquired taste. I like the idea of 'Joe Byrd' more than the music. He studied with Cage, Riley, Reich, LaMonte Young, Tudor, Virgil Thompson. There's an early Loko Yono/ Fluxus connection as well. Byrd was very political, liked psychedelics, (an early work was titled 'Prelude to 'The Mystery Cheese-Ball'), a pioneer and one of the first to use electronic music in rock. He also did an early synthesizer Christmas record. He scored several films. He worked for Mattel Toys and taught at a university (probably two separate jobs), among many other things. A true character, I think he's still alive and living in CA in the Redwoods. (And I swear I had a second Field Hippies record but people tell me I'm wrong.)Take care, KPThe Red Crayola, 'Parable of Arable Land'.
Hope you are enjoying the flashbacks CB
