The "Formula One"

Steve, since you will be making this one from scratch, is there any chance that it will be less expensive then some of your current modified gear?

Can you give us any info on it yet?

Here are the features:

Inputs - all digital:
S/PDIF
AES/EBU
USB
I2S

Outputs:
RCA's Single-ended - volume controlled
XLR's Balanced - volume controlled
Possible Sub outputs - volume controlled
headphone output - volume controlled

It will have remote-controlled input select, volume and muting.

It will be NOS, using the AD1853 D/A chip

It will be DC-coupled

Possible balanced from the D/A chips to the XLR's

Pace-Car inside - lowers jitter on all inputs

Switch to select fast and slow digital filter roll-off

Solid aluminum machined chassis, Sorbothane feet

Furutech IEC

Superclock4's clocking all data to the D/A chip(s)

LI battery power on critical circuits (mostly analog) - may be optional

May have MCLOCK output to drive and synchronize a transport clock (11.2896MHz, 24.576MHz or 49.158MHz), not a word-clock.

MSRP - probably $7K-10K

Hi Steve, being that this DAC is SS can it be battery powered?

Yes, I had planned on LI batteries, but it may be available in AC only as well.

Is "the formula one" the same as the new "Spolier tube dac" ?

No, the Formula One is being designed still.  It is a SS DAC.

Any latest on the F1? I decided against the M192 at this time....in lieu of buying a new vehicle. From the sounds of it, this DAC will be the last DAC I will ever need to buy...a great investment! :)

I am toying with making it the form factor of the Benchmark/Lavry and more in the $2000 range than $8K.  Would like to have remote control though.

Awesome!! Seriously...if you can provide the above listed features, and a remote control, AND price it around $2-3k, I will definitely be one of the first in line! Keep us posted.

That's something I would be very much interested in!

Hi Steve, can you provide a little more info on the features of the new dac you're working on.  Also you said it would be in the benchmark/lavry form factor, so I'm assuming it's going to be comparable to those units sound wise.  Thanks for your time Steve.

OrJazzM,

Here are the specs listed on the first page of this thread....I am sure some have changed along the way, but should give you some idea of what Steve is trying to accomplish.

The form factor likely only refers to the physical size of the unit....I doubt many of the parts inside will be exactly the same.

Here are the features:

Inputs - all digital:
S/PDIF
AES/EBU
USB
I2S

Outputs:
RCA's Single-ended - volume controlled
XLR's Balanced - volume controlled
Possible Sub outputs - volume controlled
headphone output - volume controlled

It will have remote-controlled input select, volume and muting.

It will be NOS, using the AD1853 D/A chip

It will be DC-coupled

Possible balanced from the D/A chips to the XLR's

Pace-Car inside - lowers jitter on all inputs

Switch to select fast and slow digital filter roll-off

Solid aluminum machined chassis, Sorbothane feet

Furutech IEC

Superclock4's clocking all data to the D/A chip(s)

LI battery power on critical circuits (mostly analog) - may be optional

May have MCLOCK output to drive and synchronize a transport clock (11.2896MHz, 24.576MHz or 49.158MHz), not a word-clock.

Thanks, I think.. now I just want one even more badly   :D

If it is reconfigured for the $1.5-2K range, the Formula One will probably not include a Pace-Car reclocker or LI battery power and it will not have a chassis milled from a block of aluminum like the original Formula One was envisioned to have.  However, it will include most of the listed features and of course have the sound quality that our DAC's are famous for.

Thanks for the updates Steve. I can live without the milled Al chassis....and I can live without the Li battery power....and I can probably even live without the pacecar (this would be able to be used in addition to the DAC, right?)...my biggest "wants" are a top notch volume control, remote control, USB input, balanced outputs, and a bonus would be subwoofer outputs (both single ended and balanced...or at least the option to run both single and balanced at the same time with no time delay...balanced to amp, single ended to sub...).

Other than that, whatever else you can squeeze in is alright with me. :)

Waiting patiently.

Steve, would the dac atleast be able to utilize one of your BPS packs?

Good question.  I suppose I could power the USB interface internally or externally, selected by a switch, like I do on the Spoiler.  This would be particularly useful for operation without Pace-Car.  Even the Pace-Car sounds a bit better with the battery though.  Powering the analog section from Battery is much more complicated.  Requires much higher voltage and +/-.
