External Hard Drive
« on: 12 Feb 2012, 05:58 pm »
I have all my music on an external hard drive that goes into my Mac Mini (Mach2Music).  I ordered power cord from the PI Group for my Mac Mini and of course have after market power cords for other components and a USB cord from DB Labs going into my Tranquility SE.  However, what about the cord that connects the hard drive to the Mac Mini?  Do they make aftermarket cords for this that would improve performance?  Is something like that even necessary?

For a HDD, no it's not necessary. Stick with the USB cable from the drive manufacturer that meets their specifications.

I'd also strongly recommend disconnecting the USB bus power between Mac Mini and Tranquility.  There's the thread that brought this to my attention.  I didn't buy the AQVOX solution, but rather the cheaper approach suggested at the end of the thread along with a cheap linear wall wart power supply.  I've been happy with it, but curious if the AQVOX would be even better.

And here's one for sale right now from a reputable ACer:

thanks for the replies, but it looks like we have conflicting answers on whether to put a new cable between the external hard drive and the Mac Mini. Skunark says it is not necessary and ZLS links the Mach2Music website for a suggested cable.  Oh what to do?
