App for measuring spl/db of earphone music?
« on: 14 May 2014, 05:05 pm »
Is there an iPhone APP that can measure the music you are listening to?
I have been getting crackling in one ear during listening sessions with certain frequencies .  :o
Sounds like tinnitus to me. I just got some really nice new earphones and have been cranking them up here and there.
I do plan on seeing an audiologist to have my hearing tested.
I just want to know what spl's I am listening at, so I turn it down, and don't get too carried away.
Thanks!

If you really wanted to know the only way would be to measure the output inside your ear using a Real-Ear Analyser (used in audiolgy to test the ouput and freq repsone of a hearing device in the ear). It will be bandwidth limited at 125Hz - 8kHz (approx). I would think that this would be outside the service and ability of most Audiologits (or Hearing Instrument Specialists).

Tinnitus is not what you describe. More likely you could have hearing damage, cerumen (wax) near the eardurm, a damagaed Ossicular Chain (middle ear bones) or a crappy ear bud.

If you swap from LT to RT ear does the problem stay at the ear, or follow the ear bud?

Any which way...don't listen to it that loud!

Thanks JRace! I'm listening to very nice Shure 846's.
I hope it's just wax , as I just did a cleaning and thought I got it all but maybe not.
I will  clean it again. If it persists , I will go to an audiologist in the next few weeks.
I was thinking that one of the EQ apps would have SPL listed.

Protect yourself. There's still a long way to go.

CanOpener can do this (dosimeter) for any cans that are in its internal database or that you can furnish the electrical specs for. It also has a reeeeallly nice crossfeed implementation. Only downside to it from the POV of your original purpose is it only works with music stored on the device (in other words, no streaming.) But I have an idea now where 85dB, 95dB etc are.

Thanks DBcooper. All my music is streamed, but maybe I will download a few songs for comparison.
It seems android has an app that would work, but you need a mic on your wires.

Dont clean you ears yourself!
You will only make it worse.

The spl at your eardrum is a combination of the music, the earphone, the cable, the amp and last but not least the size and shape of your ear canal.

No app can predicat all that.
