Okay guys. I wasn't happy with some of the results of my latest build, so I had to change things. A big part of this new cab design is the build method; if I can't make this cab as flawless and as repeatable as possible then I can't afford to build it. Thats part of the fun of a new cab design, right? The basic shape will stay the same. My first two build methods haven't given me the results I need, so it's taking me a bit longer to get the prototype done than I expected. I have to hurry though; the corian order will be ready for pickup on Thursday. I don't mean to string everyone along. I'm going to get this thing beat into submission!!!
STAY TUNED!!!
-
Well, my cab build method looks solid. Now if I can just get laminating corian right! This cab has all the right elements, and experimenting with corian it seems 20 times as rigid as MDF and very dead. Combined with my cab material (top secret) and drivers that will be used, I think this speaker will be my next step up. I'm betting that I have some pics by next Monday, the good Lord willin' an the creek don't rise! As far as drivers go, the Transducer Labs magnesium oxide dome behind a 1.5" deep waveguide looks promising. The 8" Acoustic Elegance might be the right woofer, might not. I also have some interesting ideas for stands. Crossover parts will be top shelf, too. I really want this to have the potential for being a statement monitor. What's cool is that because of the construction method, if someone would rather have a tower with possibly 2 woofers, and a to design, it could work. Flexibility will be the key to this effort.
-
Is it hard to laminate two flat pieces of corian?
-
Nothing is hard on the internet.
In the Real-World(tm), not so much.
My favorite scenario.
-First time works
-Second time works even better
-Third through sixth time works. Sign off on production.
- X weeks pass
- Seventeenth time "What the !@$!!! why isn't this epoxy curing?!! The mix ratios were correct to plus or minus one gram and we mixed for five full minutes prior to application!!!!
-
I believe when gluing corian on the flat side you have to take the sheen off. At least that's what the guys did when they put the edges on my counter top in my daughters bathroom.
-
The West Systems epoxy guys found that roughing up both mating surfaces with 80 grit sandpaper before applying epoxy worked best. My problem was using their G-5 epoxy, and it started to cure before I could get everything fully clamped. Oops. Learning experience.
-
Is it hard to laminate two flat pieces of corian?
No, not at all. Two flat pieces of anything is quite simple with the right technique.
-
Other than perhaps looking cool, if you google the terms corian+acoustic+properties, you find that corian has been used in sundry musical instruments. Further, it appears to have less internal damping than MDF. Given that, what is the motivation for using it in this manner? Couldn't you achieve something similar appearance wise with the plethora of thin laminatable kitchen and bathroom veneers?
-
How about laminating Omega-Bond to form a very stiff baffle? Too expensive?

Links?
Also what is corians resonate frequency by comparison, that could be a factor even if dampening isn't better.
-
Google not working?
-
Corian is dense, easily cut with a cnc, and doesn't react to humidity. Once it is cut, it just needs buffing. It's initially more expensive than MDF, but the finishing is easier, and the finished product is much more resilient.
-
Google not working?
Google gives different results to different people, I couldn't find the instrument company, for example.

Maybe it won't matter so much if it's thick. Maybe. Maybe the differences in thermal expansion between Corian and what it's attached to aren't so different that that joints would lossen over time.
-
How much heat are you expecting?
Solid cast acrylic seems like a neat option for certain things.
-
It's not the heat, it's the magnitude of the ratios of thermal expansion coupled with time.
-
The ratio of thermal expansion would have more impact if the corian surface were mounted to a dissimilar frame material. The Aurora II cab has no frame. It will have ano inversion layer applied to the inside walls of the cabs, and to the back of the corian "inner baffle". The corian bottoms and baffles being the same material should minimize the negative effects of the thermal ratio of expansion. Am I thinking right? I'm going with it anyway. A year in Vietnam will help me test this concept.

I find it interesting that you would cite a PDF with this observation . . .
There is now almost absolutely zero vibration in the cabinet
structure of the G2.2 – either in the midrange/tweeter wings or the
woofer towers. Even when playing loud music, vibrations cannot
be felt with the fingertips.
:D
-
You have remarkable fingertips.
-
I worked in the power plant industry for 21 years. Believe it or not, all supervision had to go to "smoke school" to get their eyeballs certified for degrees of opacity in case of a failure of emissions monitoring equipment. They were trained to read percentages of opacity coming out of the stack. If a person can be trained for that, then fingertip oscillation certification might be the next training all audiophiles need to get!
-
You have remarkable fingertips.
I already know that, but at least you know that the people at Genesis share my gift.
-
Hey Chu, thanks for the links. I never thought to Google "corian speakers". I should have realized nothing is new in this world. Anyway, I looked and found more research that corian makes an ideal baffle material. I really liked what I read, and I think this new approach will be the best thing I've built yet.
-
Ed,
Thanks for sharing.
As old as I am, like they said...never too old to learn so thanks again.
-
Well, I've made tons of progress with my new build, but I don't want to take any pics of the cab now for fear of giving away too much of the process. I happen to have a wire specialist that lives (get this!!!) within 10 minutes of my home. AMAZING. And he's really excited about my new design. This says alot because he's seen many many speakers. Since my threads keep getting locked or quarantined, it's hard to keep continuity. So, I'm hoping that I can have some examples of this new build ready to test soon. Corian bottoms and tops, with corian baffles. The first prototype will have a Transducer Labs magnesium oxide dome behind an 8.5" wide, 1.5" deep waveguide. An 8" Vifa will carry the low end. I can't wait to show you guys some pics!!!
And could we just talk about materials used, or waveguides vs AMTs? I'm getting tired of my threads getting locked or quarantined.
PEACE!!!
Ed!!!
-
Ok guys. Here's my prototype cabinet. Any opinions?

Hey, it's got an innie!
I like it, it could be really cool with some patterned solid surface. They make some that looks really close to quartz countertop material.
-
It is great seeing your vision become reality Ed.
I can't wait to get the new Acoustic Elegance woofers in there to see what your enclosure can do.
So, do we want to try an AMT? Should we get two baffle versions made so that we can compare AMT vs. MgO dome?
-
My cnc guy had the day off today, Pete. It's the first normal workday off for him in 3 years!!! He's a machine. I bet these baffles (corian) will be done by next week. Because of my epoxy error I'll have to order another sheet, if that's what you want for the AMT version. I think it's worth a try.
-
Very cool Ed!
It's going to be fun watching the progress on this. You guys always combine the best components with unique designs.
-
I think I love these! Any updates? How soon for speaker info? Keep up the GREAT work!
-
I stopped into Ed's place this last week. These bad jacksons are even more impressive in person! Very excited to see these get into full production, and even more excited about the new production process! Ed is a true artist and brings a fresh vision to his art, these are much more than a box holding speakers, they are works of art and push the boundaries of what a speaker box can be, much like the Aurora and Nimbus! Looking forward to adding a set to my system!
-
How's the progress coming along?
-
Nothing on the site at ALL since Dec 14th. Is Vapor still in business? Are you ready to release any new info on this amazing loudspeaker?
-
Nothing on the site at ALL since Dec 14th. Is Vapor still in business?
Perhaps 10 days without a project update is due to this thing we call Christmas?? Very bothersome how some of our families expect us to step away from our audio obsessions/hobby/business during holidays to spend time with other people.
-
Sorry for the delay guys. I've run into a snag. To get consistency with the outer skin of this cab I'm building a "hotbox". I really want to stick with the "no wood or wood byproducts" theme that I originally had with this speaker. Thanks for keeping interest. I love building things; has anyone built an oven before? I'm looking at ceramic heating elements and thermostats that'll maintain 350° and regulate that temp for hours.
-
Its nice to get Vapor news.Merry christmas fellow Vapor Fans !
-
Thanks for the update and A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS to Ryan ED Pete and everyone else out there!!!!!!!!!!
-
Merry Christmas guys!
-
I don't suppose these speakers will be at the 2017 Axpona?
-
Sorry about the long dry spell guys. I'm hoping to have something ready by Axpona. I'm getting my baffles done this week, so I'll have pics of that soon. WHEW!!!
-
I just picked up some VERY special parts to my new prototype. The AE drivers are due Thursday. I should have a very special photo for you guys to check out soon!!!
-
Ed - keep up the design search !
-
Yeah! Can't wait for the photos.
-
Any updates on your new loudspeaker?
-
Well, I've been trying to hold off showing anything until this was together, but I JUST CAN'T HELP IT!!! I'm pretty excited about how this is working. Basically this is a new construction technique that I've come up with. There is NO WOOD in this cab. It's a composite 1 piece skin, solid 1.18" thick inversion layer sidewalls, .5" corian inner baffle and a 1" thick corian outer baffle with a waveguide shaped in, with a .5" thick bottom with a .5" inversion layer built on top of it. What do you guys think?

-
Phil...YOU ROCK!!!
-
Ed, they look fantastic.
-
These guys aren't the lightest speakers I've ever seen. Corian runs a bit on the heavy side, but it doesn't ring like the aluminum that I was going to use for the baffles.
-
This design isnt using a TL. The TLabs tweet target is 1000Hz. These still need finishing and testing of course.
-
What is the sonic benefit of using the materials in this design vs. wood?
-
The sonic benefits have yet to be tested. I can say that just sticking your head in where the baffle should be while talking is very telling. I think the cabs' shape in conjunction with my take of the inversion layer makes for an extremely dead cab. It's almost like a sound "black hole". Maybe I should copyright that term. I'm very excited about this prototype.
-
I am trying to have a more stable cabinet by not using any wood in its construction. Wood has the ability to absorb moisture, or to dry out and shrink. That can affect joints and the finish of my speakers. So I started this prototype.
-
Ed, pete was at my house checking out his Joule's.
He said your cab is fabulous.Good luck with the prototype.
"Boldness has Genius" i hope to hear the final product someday !

I had a very nice visit with fex02 and his new room is going to be sonic nirvana once he gets it all set up.
I also visited an old friend in Orlando who is certified in HT setup and calibration. fex02 has his contact info and I really hope they get together to get all the nice room treatments that are on the way into their optimal locations.
Anyone in the central Florida region really needs to get by Francis' place and check out the dedicated room. I'm so jealous its disgusting.
-
I live in the most opposite state, otherwise I'd love to stop by. It looks nice a great large room to really let the magic happen.
-
Love the waveguide. Is the woofer transmission line? What frequency range are you looking at? Sensitivity, etc?
Good Luck, looks GREAT so far.
The woofer for this prototype is the new Acoustic Elegance TD8S. After baffle step compensation, I'd say we're looking at around 86.5dB/2.83V. Target crossover point with the T-Labs MgO dome will be close to 1000Hz. The cabinet is large enough to host a 10" woofer, and I've contemplated using the AE TD10S as an option. That configuration would yield a slightly higher sensitivity of around 88dB/2.83V with sustained SPL well over 112dB, a true studio mastering monitor. Either version will boast bass into the 30s and highs to just beyond 20KHz. We could also opt for the 4 Ohm version woofer and gain an additional 3dB of sensitivity.
The inversion layer material has a unique set of properties. It is incredibly strong but also quite porous. You can literally pour water through it were it not for the laminate skin. That porosity creates the ability for the material to swallow up sonic energy far more effectively than a solid wall. It also makes it very difficult to transmit sound through it via vibration. The resulting cabinet walls are very inert, for both sonic and environmental concerns.

I agree. Went there when Ryan delivered his speakers and will have to check out the new room for sure. A bit of a ride for me too (Florida is a big state).

Keep the pictures coming. Seems like an evolution of the Aurora. That is a good thing since it would work well in so many different sized spaces. :thumb:

A friend visiting says the pics don't give a sense of size and I need to have an updated pic. So, here it it's guys.

Holy Shnikies!
I must agree with your friend - earlier pics definitely did not give me a realistic sense of size.
-
Those are Massive!
I remember how amazing the Aurora's were when i heard them at Ryan's. Perfectly balanced, detailed and POWERFUL while at the same time smooth and completely non fatiguing.
Ive got a feeling you've taken the next step with these! Really like the looks.
-
It's twue! It's twue!
Really cool looking cabinets Ed. With that design, I am picturing them in a glossy candy apple red or deep shade of blue. What color are you going with for the first pair?
-
LOL!!! I was thinking Ferrari Yellow; something presumptious and over the top; with polished black corian baffles. I wanted to portray a fast exotic look. That idea went over like a fart in church. Now the color is slated to be a solid piano white. We just finished the sidewalls of the second cab last night. Almost there!

Ha! I was wondering if anyone would get the reference!
Yellow sounds really cool for the same reason I was thinking red, but I agree it would be a tough sell. I'm looking forward to seeing your build progress, keep us posted.

-
Ok guys... I'm trying to get things done!!! My thumb is "tender", but time waits for no man. Anyway, I don't like how a flat top looks, so I'll try this. Anyone besides me like this?
-
That sets it off real good
-
Ed I liked the flat top but this is even better. Glad you are back at it.
-
I like the curved top, and it probably sounds better, being stiffer, The bottom of the cabinet is horizontal, right?
This is a good looking cabinet and the combination of the curve and the angle will certainly stop anyone from putting a flower pot on top and spoiling the sound!
One thing to watch out for: make sure the arc of the top does not have the same center point as the HF driver, i.e., that there is still a varying distance from the HF driver's center to the top edge, to distribute the frequencies affected by the edge diffraction.
-
If I've done my calculations right, the wave guide is around 8.18" across. The baffle is 12" wide, and the top of the guide is 1.25" from the top of the baffle. Hopefully that'll be enough differentiation. We shall see. The proof's in the pudding, right? That's what prototypes are all about. Thanks for checking it out!
-
My wife thinks the new top looks like Queen Nefertari's crown. I don't know if that's good or bad, but putting that curve in the top makes that panel automatically stiffer and less likely to have dips and surface deviation for finishing. I'm trying to think of form following function. Oh, and the bottom and the baffle are the only "flat spots" on this cab design. Nothing new, I'm sure, but it's new for me!
-
(http://www.audiocircle.com/image.php?id=165620)
-
Progress!!!
-
So...let me explain. This set of cabs will have an "inner" and "outer" set of baffles. The inner corian baffle is what you see here. It still needs the stainless threaded inserts and the woofer and port thru holes cut. The thru-hole near the top is for the Transducer Labs magnesium oxide dome tweeter. I put that curve in the top today, and I have to say that I think I'm starting to like this builds shape!
Back to the explaining. The outer baffle will bolt down on the inner baffle. The woof will have a heavy gasket material around it and will be squeezed between the inner and outer baffles to try to reduce vibration transmission to the cab. There will be a special material that sits on the back top edge of the port shelf that will go up to just above the woofer, to clean up some low/mids that might try to escape out that bottom port. I think that this could be the quietest set of cabs that I've ever built!
-
One thing to watch out for: make sure the arc of the top does not have the same center point as the HF driver, i.e., that there is still a varying distance from the HF driver's center to the top edge, to distribute the frequencies affected by the edge diffraction.
In this case, because the tweeter will be sitting 1.5" down inside an 8" diameter waveguide with a smooth circular arc profile from throat to mouth, edge diffraction is not a concern. The tweeter is effectively on a baffle with 4" diameter roundovers. Diffraction is well controlled and allows it to match the woofer directivity in the crossover range. That guide not only controls diffraction, it uses the diffraction shaping of the tweeter response to greatly reduce tweeter stress levels in the 1KHz region. The electrical transfer function will be at least 12dB down at 1KHz relative to the top of the tweeter band, allowing strain free crossover to the woofer anywhere between 800Hz and 1200Hz.

-
Looks great Ed! I thought from the earlier photos that not only were the cabs peaked to the rear but the tops seemed to slant to one side. Perhaps an optical illusion?
Cheers,
Lester
-
There isn't a slant to one side or the other(at least not intentionally ) I'm really excited about how these are starting to look. These might not be as curvy as my Aurora or Nimbus designs, but they have some pretty dramatic lines of their own!
-

The top is convex, so it could appear to slant depending on the angle of the photo.
-
Just an update on these; I weighed a cab with baffle in place, and it tipped the scales at 115.8lbs! Without drivers.

A woof and dome Tweet are 11.4lbs additional.

These corian baffles buff up pretty well. It's amazing that those two baffles are the same material! I don't think that these should be painted at all!
-
Amazing work Ed! You're right about the baffles, no paint needed.
-
The hard decision now is what color to paint the cabs? The black baffles are so shiny and sweet!
I'd love to see some examples and ideas of great color combos to go with the black baffles on these!
-
(http://www.audiocircle.com/image.php?id=170504)
Ready for paint finally. Now the question is, to work out the x-o before paint or after?
-
I think a dark bronze/Brown flake would look great on those.

Hey guys. I have a set of Aurora ready for paint, a set of my prototype that I've dubbed the "VonOttos" (a personal friend of mine is purchasing the parts that we're using for this prototype, and his name is...you guessed it...Otto! Oh, and this first set is his!) ready for paint. I have 2 sticking points. 1) I don't like how my new stand/X-O plinth looks, and 2) taking consistent measurements for the new prototype X-O have been difficult. I'm frustrated, and living 750 miles or so from Ryan and Pete isn't helping. AARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!
I guess if building great speakers were easy, everyone would be doing it, right? Thanks for the encouragement though.
-
Road Trip!!!
Keep on keepin' on, Ed. :thumb:
-
Super excited to have the VonOttos in my space!
-
otto 802, how do the Vanottos sound?
-
I'm still working out the stand and x-o Seadogs. I hope to post some pics of a VonOtto on its stand soon!!! I'm planning a road trip to St. Louis next week to finalize this x-o.

Thanks for the update.

Great work! I like how these turned out :thumb:

I was going to say the same thing,.,
-
Thanks guys! I really like how these look, too! Like I've said, the crossover will actually be in the bottom "foot" of this stand. After the x-o is tested I'm thinking about vacuum-potting the entire board with a dyed epoxy resin to keep the x-o safe from whatever might get in the back of a speaker stand.
-
Slick looking. A lot different than your first renderings.
-
It looks like this first set will be a hue of metallic copper. I don't know if the baffle will be the same color or not.

Looking great Ed! Like Pete said, maybe do the baffle and stand plinth in black with lots of copper flakes.
-
When can we expect specifications and projected price on this beautiful loudspeaker?
-
It's too soon to project final cost right now. After I get the x-o worked out with Ryan and Pete, and have talks with my painter, I'll know more. Thanks for the interest though, guys. I really like how this speaker has turned out, and I think that it's a very different offering.
-
Give our regards to Ryan and Pete, we miss the totality of you all!
Happy Holidays,
Phil
-
I'll do that amigo! And a Merry Christmas to you and your family!!!

The new prototypes and I are in Vaporland. Now the real magic begins!!!
-
Sweet!!! :thumb:
-
Awesome, Ed!
Very curious how these come out.
-
With big custom stands, the crossover could be moved out of the speaker cabinet.
-
The Auroras always had the x-o in the "plinth", in the stand base. Except for the very first prototype set that is. The width of the vertical part of the stand is designed to house the x-o. Good call!
-
Send our best to everyone in Vapor land!
-

An x-o is together and the VonOttos are...ALIVE!!!!! They sound amazing already to me.
-
Ed, nice looking speakers, nice to see them in the Vapor Room, time to gear up for a new year of fun and excitement.
Best of luck to you on the new speakers and our very best to all the Vapor family for the coming new year.
Phil

The VonOttos had a setback...one of the Transducer Labs magnesium oxide tweets have a very discernible noise. Almost like a sizzling snare drum mechanical thing going on. The other side is the flatest measuring output from a speaker that we've seen, since the Perfect Storm top end. Amazing!!! This TLabs mag-oxide dome sounds really good. Punchy.
-
Other than the tweeter mechanical problem, this x-o has come together well.
-
That problem is easily fixed. Toe in looks similar to the Auroras. And the Auroras rocked!
-
I'm really proud of these. I love how this design has "matured" to this point.
-
How much bigger than the SBs/ Aurora are the Vons? I know those SBs are a few feet back, but they really seem to dwarf them.
-
The Vons are pretty big. Heavy, too. They are big enough for a 10" woof. A real kick in the gut monitor.
-
This was a proof of concept prototype. I will keep this with relatively few changes. I plan on doing a smaller version of this cab. The sky's the limit with this one!
-
It looks like the wonderful Mag. oxide dome in my VonOtto will be a one-off...Transducer Labs is out of buisness.

Is Vapor audio still in business? No new posts on this or anything else for quite some time. What Gives?????????
-
I was under the impression that they are still in business but no longer taking any new orders. The site is still up to date, but maybe Ed or Pete could give us a update. Hope all is well.

Hey guys. I was stalking the halls at Axpona looking for a replacement dome tweet for my Aurora/VonOtto builds. I think I may have what I need in the newest SB Acoustics beryllium dome with neodymium motor. I had quite an in-depth discussion with an SB engineer. Now all it'll take is some cnc work and testing, and I'll be back on track. I don't plan on ever stopping making speakers!

Good to hear Ed. Was amazed by the Auroras when I heard them. Would love to hear these as well. What's your target for having these ready for production?
