Title: open baffle subs with other speakers?
Post by: guf on 2 Aug 2019, 03:39 am
Do most people that have a dual OB set up use GR top ends?  it seems like they are a great option for any speaker?  I wonder how many people come here for the subs to add to their set ups, then end up with more.

How about using them with vintage horn speaker like Altec or Klipsch where horn subs are often suggested? anyone with experience in this area?

I built my dual ob subs several years ago and paired them with 5 different speakers before ending with Super 7 monitors. I really wanted to try them with Magnepan MMGs and Zu Cubes but had my heart set on what I ended up with.

I pair them with vintage Altec Valencias and they made a huge improvement to the top to bottom performance of the system. I am also in the process of building the super 7 uppers to pair with the subs. It will be interesting to be able to go between the Altec's and the super 7 uppers to compare.

I am using a set of GR Research OB subs with custom speakers utilizing  Altec Lancing 288/287 Field Coil Compression Horns that go from 400hz up and a set of Jamboree Bass Bins that go from 400HZ down to about 38hz. I cross the OB subs at about 60hz. sound is absolutely sublime  :D

I am rebuilding the crossovers for the horns with parts from Danny. While the main rig is down, I am using the same subs with a set of Omega SHO Alnico monitors. I cross those at about 120HZ. Again fantastic sound. Not quite the Altecs but they don't weigh 300# each.

The OB subs load a room in such way that I think you can use them with just about anything.
