Title: Where to buy vinyl of all kinds on the web?
Post by: TheChairGuy on 5 Sep 2007, 05:33 am
We have a sticky already for Jazz LP's, but why not start one for ALL LP's (new or used) .

So, come on fella's, where on the worldwide web (or Mail Order) do you get your vinyl jollies?  aa

Well, I'll start then..

As I've had a couple vinyl stores near me (until recently) I've only bought from one mail order/internet retailer for records - Music Direct (www.amusicdirect.com)

A few others I'd likely buy from in the future include:

www.acousticsounds.com
www.vinyl.com (limited inventory, but great prices)
www.elusivedisc.com

I noticed Red Trumpet closed their doors recently  :( Hey, does Princeton Record Exchange sell via the web?....I remember they came to my college (Villanova) and sold records years ago and I know they are still there (Larry Crim mentioned it recently) - but...www.prex.com doesn't find their website right now (just tried)

Of course, there is ebay and Amazon for LP's, too. Anymore out there.....this is rather a pathetic selection of places now left to buy albums

Craig's List.  There is someone getting out of vinyl and unloading at least every other week.     You just have to be patient and willing to buy the lot to get a good deal.  That's how I end up with many extras but I still come out ahead compared to buying pricy individual collector's LPs.  The best deal I got was a collection of over 100 boxed sets of top notch opera recordings for $300. :thumb:

Correction!  Merle gave me his collection of hundreds of baroque LPs from the Musical Heritage Society for free.  That's the best deal.

For Princeton Record Exchange try  http://www.princetonrecordexchange.com/
The thing is, if you want something in particular, I would suggest GEMM and a great deal of patience.  The gradings are nowhere's near being equal from merchant to merchant and the shipping has gotten ridiculous but still its viable.  Near mint can mean anything from near mint to only a few major scratches.
Princeton Record Exchange is a way to kill hours and be transported away.  I just absolutely get lost in there.
There are other local vendors of used vinyl but nothing as extensive as Princeton.  The campus is nearby and the art museum there has some treats worth seeing as well.
I also buy occassional new records but lots of people, like vendors at work etc. know I'm into vinyl and send me presents which is often very cool and sometimes when I forget to listen to it can be an embarassment.

soundstagedirect.com has outstanding service and selection. I have ordered from almost everyone, but I keep coming back to Seth at Soundstage because he cares about vinyl and totally stands behind everything he sells.

Audiogon member Emil_anghel always has an eclectic variety of LPS for sale. He is a bit more expensive than some of the hit and miss sellers on the 'gon, but you get what you pay for with Emil plus he packs well and is a great guy to deal with.

Oh man. Buying records, in a shop or online, is my favourite thing, ever. I buy an eclectic mixture of old and new. Mainly black music. Mainly left of centre material. I have a thing for the obscure. I like anything that dares to be different, be it jazz, african, disco, cuban, reggae or electronic.

Some of my fave places to buy:

Direct from an artists label itself is a good way to go as well... Especially for heavy metal, I found albums that I had no clue were on Vinyl.

Great idea. I just bought AC Newman's new album off matadorrecords.com. Album was released today, got 3 bucks off the CD, bought the vinyl also and 2 vinyls for my kids (they also collect).

YepRoc is a great site: they have Robyn Hitchcock, Nick Lowe, Ian Hunter, Paul Weller, The Minus Five, Sloan and Kristin Hersh. It's like one stop shopping for me. Plus, if you buy the vinyl, they give you a Stash with mp3's of everything you bought (and more).

I know you said online or mail order, but let's not forget the local paper classifieds or yard sales/estate sales. I've been to many yard sales where I've been able to pickup albums for pennies on the dollar. The husband died and the wife just wants them gone is the normal reason for selling. One real benefit here is the ability to look at the vinyl before you buy.

I also want to thank everyone for their lists of places to purchase from, I've been wanting to buy some more vinyl from somewhere other than feebay.

John,

Since you are in the bay area go check out Rasputins in SF or Berkeley.   Amoebe is also excellent in both locations.

John,

Since you are in the bay area go check out Rasputins in SF or Berkeley.   Amoebe is also excellent in both locations.

I've been to both outfits...they don't thrill me (and they're not that close...crossing a lot of traffic in SF to get to them)

Mill Valley Music is only 6 miles away and north of me in a town called Novato is a timewarp of a place with a great proprietor called Watts Music.  Between them my vinyl needs are handled well :thumb:

There is also a place closer to me in SF in the North Beach area...can't remember the name...but they have a (cramped) basement full of albums ALL priced at $5.00 flat. Quite a trip in there, too...not for those with claustrophobia tho

Thx, John

I have always gotten good service from the Jazzloft, Soundstage Direct, Music Direct, and Acoustic Sounds.  They have in stock what they claim to have and know how to box records to survive the trip without warping. Better Records is good, too, but you have to be willing to pay a premium.

Title: Re: Where to buy vinyl of all kinds on the web? - Fred Meyer online
Post by: kenreau on 9 Nov 2009, 09:25 pm
I wanted to mention to the AC gang a recent online retailer that is selling vinyl for really great prices.  The store is a Pacific NW region brick and mortar chain called "Fred Meyer".  It is a one-stop consumer goods and groceries store.  You may have seen news of a music ordering blunder they did about a year ago where someone ordered a bunch of vinyl releases (instead of seedee) and they actuall sold like crazy.  So now they carry vinyl.

I just bought the Nirvana ORG reissues at Everday Music (ripoff) for $28/ea. FM's regular price is $24.98 (the correct MSRP) but they are selling them for $18.49/ea. That is a smoking deal. Plus free shipping over $25?

I live in Portland(Orygun) and visit the stores regularly and never see them at these low prices.  Plus the brick and mortar stores inventory is usually very limited with usually left over "Back to Black" drek. I'm doing all my shopping on line now.

http://www.thestore24.com/Music/Dcs.aspx?Format=LP+Vinyl&dcs=1

Get them while they're hot.

Found an excellent online seller. Jim's Cards, Books and Records in Newark.

Low prices and the three disk I got were spotless (he must be using a vac cleaner) Plus he had what I was looking for, which was early Lyle Lovett on vinyl.

Fast shipping too. Will purchase again from this vendor.  :thumb:

I will say local Craig's List one more time.  Last night I picked up over 450 records for $150 cash.  100 mostly pristine boxed sets of Opera and classical music and 200 classical music LPs thrown in.  It's a large part of one man's collection that began in the late 50s to 1980.  He wrote the time and place of purchase inside each box cover.  There are a lot of unusual recordings in this collection which is perfect for me since I already have lots of the usual recordings.  Now I have to physically expand my Opera library somehow.  :duh:

two places that havent been mentioned as yet are amoeba records and records by mail.

i have used records by mail and the service is exemplary.  amoeba is local to me in hollywood, not too far from home and it can be on my way home so i have never used the mail order service.  i expect it would be good though.

Thanks for the Bump Jim - I'd forgotten about this thread.

Just had a read through and surprised no one has yet mentioned DISCOGS (http://www.discogs.com)

Got to admit I typically target original as opposed to new pressings and this for me, is by far the best resource I've used and is now my turn to site for vinyl purchases.

Gradings on the whole are reliable, the sellers are typically small-medium scale businesses with a reputation to maintain via a feedback system similar to eBay.

It offers a Want List Feature.
Once you've added the specific pressings to this list you can then search to see who has them, also as new discs become available that are on your list you get a PM letting you know.

It also identifies vendors listed in order of the number of your want list items they have for sale.

Another good feature is that it will give you data on how much a particular pressing has sold for (max and min) so you can get a flavour of what you can expect to pay.

What I typically do is wait for a want list item to pop up in my inbox, if it looks like a fair price check the vendor's feedback - if OK I go on to see what else they have, build up an order of 5-10 discs to optimise P&P.

Works really well, as I say, particularly if you prefer original copies or older re-releases as opposed to new pressings.

Issues?
Well the only problems I have has been either, new vendors not realising that there's more than one pressing and advertising the wrong one or, the odd disc where the grading was obviously incorrect.
In all cases this has been very amicably resolved via brief email contact.

The main problem though is it's just far to easy to spend lots and lots of money on vinyl recommended by the regular posters in the "What have you listened to recently thread?"  :D

Cheers
Dave

Is there a crash course or thread here that talks about the basics of record quality and how to recognize it? Thanks!

Not really. New vinyl can be hit and miss. Sometimes we write about individual records and our experiences with it. For instance, the Rhino release of The Yes Album was so bad I had to ask my daughter for the well-worn copy I gave her when my "new" record arrived. Absolutely lifeless.

The Elvis Costello MoFi releases are phenomenal. The 45 rpm Doors releases are great, too. A few of us wrote about how good the Nick Drake Pink Moon box was. Roscoeiii turned me on to Black Moth Super Rainbow but I bought the picture disk on eBay  during the 10 minutes he posted that the BLACK vinyl version was the one to have. And it sure is different, the conventional vinyl is way better (so my daughter got the picture disk...).

I check analog planet for Fremer's reviews. Tone publications reviews records as well. You can post and ask!

I dont like not being able to see stuff before I buy, but you gotta do what you gotta do for certain things that just are not going to turn up in the bins anytime soon if at all. I prefer internet sources for newer reissues, Acoustic sounds has the best packaging, but I've used them all over the years- music direct, elusive disc, Better records.
For previously owned UK pressings and other more rare or sealed items I prefer ebay sources that are really dealers or recognizably part of the vinyl community, not some guy with no turntable grabing stuff at his local used store without even looking at it and putting it on ebay becasue he thinks he has gold on his hands (which is getting more and more common and one of the reasons the stores are "dry" frequently). Once in awhile go out on a limb and buy a record listed along side jewlrey, bobleheads and baseball cards.
I do not use Gemm. "overgrading' happened on all items I got there. Record Grading is so reliant on lighting, honesty, and subjectivity- that's why I prefer to do it myself.

I have to give kudos to PopMarket.  They don't always have what I want, but their customer service has been outstanding, for me.  Vinyl has always been problematic, with any manner of things that can be wrong with a pressing.  PopMarket seems to know that, and has always replaced any disc that I found defective.   :thumb:

I score many rare LPs that I want from Discogs' Market Place and also get lucky sometime with GEMM.

To many great older LPs prevents me from risking on new releases

Almost all medium size cites have used record stores. I am lucky and where I live are at least a dozen still around! Plus all Salvation Army stores, Goodwill stores and plenty of other second hand stores. Then there is Half Price Books. Not in all big cities, but many do have them. I have two locally.
I know my favorite Record Store has big days when plenty of visitors come in to town for celebrations. They make sure to visit the store.
Some stores are terrible. High prices, and scratched up records. Others seem to have good records and decent not too high prices.
Then there is Amazon and eBay. I avoid eBay. But DO buy new Lps from Amazon Marketplace.
Also estate sales. I never went to them, but I have friends who do go regularly. Best if you like them, not so good if just to hunt for LPs. Takes time and skill to know which estate sales will be good, and which are worthless.

I stopped by a yard sale in a regular suburban neighborhood on my way to the office one Saturday.  They had boxes and boxes of lps, but I didn't have time to dig through them.  Later in the day I stopped back when they were about to close shop and picked out several that looked promising.  On a whim I asked how much for the lot, they said $30, I countered $20, sold.  I sold a couple hundred undesirables to a used record shop for close to what I paid and scored a few hundred for myself for virtually free.  I dig through them and clean them up from time to time, best score I ever made.  Don't discount estate and yard sales if you're willing to accept less than perfect.

I hit a lot of yard sales back in the 90's when many were dumping LP's. Today, many are dumping CD's. The one thing I always asked, how much for all? Usually they offered $20 or below for their lot. I  dumped them at the swap meets for $1-2 each. I sure wished I had known today back then. I would have saved them all.  :duh:

I just want a vendor that has cheap records ($1-2, $3-4, etc.) that I can grab several 12's and maybe a couple of LP's and get the exact stuff I want and not have to deal with driving around and not finding anything because they are already pick through by guys like you or record dealers.

I have, in the past, found 100% of ALL advertised records for sale, or even records I was told about by co workers, to have been seriously cherry picked. What I got to see was the junk no one else wanted. (and the person selling gushing how wonderful the person was who owned them, and took such good care of them, and yes of course no one else has seen them.) as I look at scratched up junk, no one would take for free. Not even one interesting title or artist or label, scratched or not! Gee, how odd... Yeah right.
So I also have stopped going to Goodwill, or any thrift, or even Half Price Books. Because there is nothing to find worth bothering with. (at least for me. I used to have 13,000 LPs 2/3 Classical, and dumped them. So not a chance I would rebuy something I THREW AWAY years ago. But if I found that treasure of Mercury 90000s or original and still pristine Blue Note...

Nobody has mentioned ReverbLP.com.

I just looked at it. It looks like a form of Discogs.

We have a sticky already for Jazz LP's, but why not start one for ALL LP's (new or used) .

So, come on fella's, where on the worldwide web (or Mail Order) do you get your vinyl jollies?  aa

I've found a lot of LP's on amazon. I look vintage jazz LP"s  London phase 4 LP's or others that I like.

I just want a vendor that has cheap records ($1-2, $3-4, etc.) that I can grab several 12's and maybe a couple of LP's and get the exact stuff I want and not have to deal with driving around and not finding anything because they are already pick through by guys like you or record dealers.

Half the fun is the hunt; finding an unexpected stash of good stuff.  Years ago I found most of the original Living Presence Mercury catalog of Frederick Fennell's Eastman Band music.   I was smiling for two weeks after that. :thumb:

Lately, only time I dig is during Capitol Audio Fest, or that rare time I am near a record store.

I am not an audiophile, so the majority I am looking for is 80's and 90's (and some of it I can't afford the rareness price).

For those of us in europe Dodax and juno.co.uk are 2 of the most interesting options for buying new.

ReverbLP is dead. If I can't find what I am looking for in the used market locally or regionally, I check Ebay, Discogs, or Musicstack. Amazon can be hit or miss and is a crap shoot if the wanted LP has been repressed/released under different versions. Not enough info on Amazon listings to know what you are REALLY getting.

Edited to add: there is a new online source called https://vinylom.com/ thats trying to replace reverblp.com. I have not used them, and their listings are a little hard to filter through.

AGREED, same here. The Goodwills and thrift stores around here are all cherry picked and have nothing but junk stuff, or have it so piled up and disorganized and crammed away half way hidden, that its not worth the trouble to look.

I usually use Amazon or eBay for new albums, recently I purchased a few used or NOS ones for Discogs.
There's some really strange sellers on Discogs, though.
One said make offer, I put in an offer on a Saturday night and then logged off the computer until the following day.
Sunday morning I log in and the seller had accepted the offer, he sent 2 emails regarding payment and then cancelled the order at Buyer's Request.
I asked him if he hit the wrong button, he said he doesn't hold items, especially if he accepted a lower price!
I wrote him back about completing the transaction and no response.

Like I said, there's some strange ones out there.
