DIY speakers stands suggestions for XRS 3's ?
« on: 16 Feb 2009, 12:08 am »

On Feb 23rd I'm getting a pair of XRS 3's with hemp drivers.  Going into small den with carpet.  Using PSP 1 and Red Wine 30.2 integrated to drive the speakers. Playing 70% jazz, 20" classical, 10% pop/rock.

As the speakers are 27"H,  I'm guessing they will be similar to the Gallo 3.1 that I previously owned in that they would benefit from being raising up at least 6".

Speaker base is 11" W x 7.5" deep.  Already thinking of looking for two maple butcher blocks that are minimum of 14 " x 20" x 3" D as I could cut each one in half then glue together two halves to make two stands that would be 6" tall.  Would put spikes on the maple stands.

I have very limited budget ( less than $100 ).  What are suggestions for diy stands ?

thanks,

- Ken

Ken, the XRSs are tilted, so depending on how far out you sit, you may not need much height. I know talking to Louis he is in favor of maple bases for the XRSs. If you go to Omega's site under About / Links, there is a link to Timbernation. If you are willing to go less height and unfinished, he will likely come in a bit over $100 / pair. Also Timbernation has an ultra heavy duty metal spike if you are on carpet that would add some height.

Dear Ken,

I am using the maple base, about 2" thick butcher block. The result is fantastic: bigger stage, better positioning of the instruments. Very simple, cheap and effective! IHO no need to go for very thick base! From my experience spikes will not help at all, but my base is not on the carpet!

I'd suggest searching ebay for some solid chunk of maple... the speakers aren't that big so the size you'll need isn't hard to find. I used 16 oz brass plumb bobs from Harbor Freight (now discontinued) for the feet.

Here's a couple good candidates:
