Title: Selling all demo speakers!!!
Post by: Daedalus Audio on 12 Jul 2020, 08:59 pm
Since we will not have any audio shows for a year, seems like time to sell all our demo speakers and make new ones for next year!

More info with list, prices and pics coming soon.

btw Our costs have been climbing and prices will go up this winter, we just can't avoid that anymore. So this demo sale is going to be an incredible opportunity for a few lucky people.

I can vouch for the Apollo, Apollo 11 and Zeus demo speakers

Saw and heard these at Lou’s shop in September when I choose my Apollo 11 woods.

They sounded wonderful in Lou’s workshop

The pictures don’t do Lou’s fine craftsmanship justice
I wanted to kidnap those Apollo 11s for sale right then and there
But Lou wouldn’t let me.

Sounds like an ideal time for someone to get a great deal.
If you are sitting on the fence - here is your ideal opportunity -
without the anticipation or burn in.

Also the burnt maple is quite the finish - I’m fully enjoying my 11s.

Sound and vision

Yep, I had to snatch them up, didn't want to take a chance and miss out on these masterpieces. I've always wanted to get a pair of Daedalus speakers. Originally I was thinking about the Argos but when I saw the Poseidons at this price and finish, I know that I had to get them, as Lou said it has major WOW factor, that burnt figured maple wood is just sublime, the craftsmanship is beyond compare. I must also add that Lou is one of the nicest guys around in the audio circle. I spoke to him a few times and he was always a gentleman and always willing to answer questions and offer advice, even though I know he's a busy man. I'm really happy to join the Daedalus family and have the most beautiful pair of speakers that I've ever seen, in my home.

Congratulation
I don't know how many Poseidon are their with audiophiles  I have a pair that I purchased from Lou Feb. 18th 2018 ! I saw these but lou had not upgraded them and had not made up his mind about selling them at that time I did listen to most  of lou speakers except for the Zeus as they were not hooked up . But I lucked out with  Poseidon (Dark Walnut speakers)  I shipped mine for an upgrade this week  Lou should have them this coming Monday morning for Tweeter , rings & tweeter crossover upgrades .
You will will delighted with them , They are fast ! with impressive Bass  & are  non-Fatiguing  like all all of Lou speakers I can listen to them for hours , with quality amplification it is Nirvana ! it took me about 3 weeks or more to finally find proper placement , although it is really not necessary  to be that precise  they image very well   :violin:

Enjoy

Hi!  Hopefully this is helpful, but I think if you click on the page for each speaker there is a button which says "Specifications" - if you click that button I think a window pops up with the dimensions and weight.

I clicked on all the specs pages and there is a lot of writing but nothing showing size/weight...unless its hidden somewhere OR the whole page isn't loading on my PC for some reason. Thanks

I changed to Firefox from Explorer and now I see the size/weight at the very bottom of the page. Couldn't scroll down before. Thanks again and my apologies!

Funny, the size and weight show up at the bottom of the "Specifications" pop-up window for me.  Here's an example ......

Interesting comment.  It appears that the midrange and tweeters are about the same in both speakers, with a slight difference in tweeter orientation and a bigger difference in tweeter height.  How would you describe the sonic differences?  do you use a subwoofer?   Thanks

I don't want to persuade you too much  - the step up to the Apollo 11s is very rewarding

Are you going short wall or long wall for your speakers?

Lou could address this more specifically
but that ten inch driver really opens things up and where it transfers over to the midrange is seamless
the music is suspended - the instruments float in air

The cabinet is substantial and with all but one angle not being at 90o - there just isn't any sonic signature related to the cabinet.
The Ulysses were very neutral in the room. The Apollo 11 speakers disappear.

They do not overpower the room

Take all the qualities of the Ulysses and Lou's speaker line sound and refine them to the next level.
Engaging, tonally balanced dynamic, resolving...

The low end is so musical I really don't have the need for a subwoofer.
If a recording's low end is balanced - it sounds incredible. (My son is an upright classical bassist).

A lot of new masterings are a little goosed up in the low end to compensate for lesser speakers  - and the Apollos will pass that imbalance thru - much like I am sure they would  splendidly handle low end movie content.

My Audio Research CD player was sounding bright with the Apollo 11s, I switched over to an inexpensive but killer  MHDT Orchid R2R dac -  digital is sounding analog.
I am very happy and cutting way back on vinyl purchases. I am at around 300 hours break in and everything has came together. I broke down and started playing lps at night a couple weeks ago - wow.

There are added benefits with the MTTM array being more at listening height than the Ulysses and the low end focused below, especially if your speakers are on the short wall and you are listening further back. The higher speaker mttm array really impacts the image - the musicians are right in front of you.  The new Eaton tweeters are more resolving and lifelike, crisp soundstage and air. Incredible micro details. The mid range richer (trim rings and crossover). I am hearing further into the music.

I had two music friends (and big audiophiles) come over last weekend.  They are very familiar with my system and always loved the Ulysses.
They re-invited themselves back for tomorrow night as they couldn't believe what they were hearing on old standby recordings.

My son in law stopped by and walked into the room - sat down and his jaw dropped.

Not sure if you intend to use this for HT action movies with subsonic bass

My Ulysses V2 have went to my home theatre and made an immediate impact.
I do have a JL Audio F113 which worked well with my old speakers which sorely needed.   I rolled it down even more - 60 hz low rolloff for the Ulysses.

I demo'd the pair of Apollo 11s Lou has for sale.
I had mine built nearly identical - I liked them so much

feel free to pm me

Lou or some of the others who went from the Ulysses to the Apollos can chime in.

Tom

I guess I'm going your route, Tom.  My wife wants the Ulysses in the home theater (mostly because they look so nice) and as I told Lou any time one can get one's spouse behind a move like this it needs to be jumped on, so to speak.

Grats on the sales Lou!

Thanks, I was surprised that the Muse and Athena didn't fly out right away. Just killer deals not to be repeated.

To be honest this was kind of job insurance for my assistant. I'm not sure how sales will be later in the year and since we don't need the demos I can keep him busy building new ones. In any case a few people got amazing speakers at killer deals. So everyone is happy! :thumb:

Now we'll see if someone with a big room jumps on the ZEUS  :)

You will be delighted with your Athena, Greg.  I have one of Lou's earliest pairs (same pair he first took to shows), which have been with me for several yrs now.  All the upgrades, etc since.  Lou and I have chatted many times about raising the bar with the Apollo 11s, and I may yet do so someday.  For now, I can just tell you that the Athena continue impress - Beautiful and spot-on clarity, truth-to-source timbre, all the superlatives apply.  I still shake my head with a smile.  Recently changed amplification from Merrill Audio Veritas (Class D) to VAC Statement 450 iQ.  I never knew what the Athena could bring until the VAC walked in!

Enjoy your new babies.

Thanks for sharing your experience with your Athena speakers.  My room is very limiting in terms of the size and placement so Lou thought the Athena speakers would be a good match.  I will be using Digital Amp Company Golden Cherry amps with custom linear power supplies that Tommy made for the amps.  I cannot wait to hear the Athenas sing.

Initial impressions compared to the Ulysses - they play "bigger", even with my eyes closed .  A couple of mild surprises:  I forgot that they are slightly less efficient than the Ulysses, but noticed that with familiar material my volume control was 1-2 dB higher, and sure enough the spec sheet says 1.5 dB less efficient; they didn't "drop" right into the same placement as the Ulysses, it quickly became apparent that moving them a couple of inches further out into the room and in from the sidewalls resulted in a noticeable improvement in imaging and smoother response.

What do you think about the high end (Tweeters)?  More/ less sparkle, detail, brightness, etc?

What do you think about the high end (Tweeters)?  More/ less sparkle, detail, brightness, etc?

Too early for more in-depth sonic comments, I think.  2 things I have noticed about the tweeters: I prefer (so far) the level switch in the (-) position, and I imagine the staggered angling contributes to the bigger stereo image.  It also makes adjusting toe-in much easier (I have ended up just making the outside of the speaker parallel to the room wall).  Last thing - so far the louder I play them the better they sound   :D

FWIW, often speakers need to settle in for a bit after shipping , even when they are 100% broken in.  Hence the tweeter may sound a bit strident at first and then smooth out. The middle flat position is best and tells you everything is good. :thumb:

I have exactly the same experience with my Apollo 11s, is there a rational and scientific explanation for this phenomenon of sound improvement over time, isn't it our ears that get used to their sound?

Pleasantly surprising and a bit counter-intuitive (and thanks to audiotom posting his experience) the Apollo 11's seem to acoustically fit my slightly asymmetric mid-sized room better than the Ulysses.  In addition to playing "big", the stereo image is more centered and the sweet spot is larger.  I don't notice much if any difference in bass quality or quantity, though, but that has not been a problem with any speakers I have used in the last 10-12 years; perhaps more listening time on a broader selection of source material will change that.

Once you get used to the Apollo then go back to the Ulysses and you will hear quite a difference in the bass, if not then I suspect some part of your system may be holding back the bass definition?
The 10" are smoother (more flat), cleaner and have a relaxed feel while still being more defined. Are you using our DiDs under any of your components? They tend to allow for more bass definition.
thanks,
Lou

As can be seen in the photo, there are chrome spikes and DAD under the speakers (although I have used black under the Ulysses; are they better? ).  The bass may be slightly better, but in my listening so far it is not as noticeable as other areas of improvement, which may be due solely to choice of source material up to this time.

Yes, the Stainless Steel/Brass spikes we designed are better. Funny how once you reach a certain level of refinement small changes become very noticeable. Those black ones while better than the common Chinese spikes still left a lot to be desired. Those old ones are made of soft steel and the density of our Stainless Steel spikes is a big plus. In addition the heavy brass leveling nuts add to the mix and help dissipate resonances. All of my isolation devices are based on the idea of using different density materials to dissipate resonance, and these work. :thumb:

btw I just designed some new steel plate bases that will use our SS/Brass spikes to be used with our 8" series speakers if people want more stability than just the spikes.

I think when you get your Ulysses upgraded you will then notice the difference in the bass.   As it is now there is a considerable difference between your new Apollo11 and your older Ulysses so the bass is the least different.

That was my supposition as well.  Another thought I had was that better bass definition is contributing to the subjectively larger stereo image and dynamic impact without calling attention specifically to bass response or definition.

Yes the 10" driver is very very smooth flat and defined in a way that is natural and does not call attention to the speaker.  Basically my kind of system :D

One well known corollary of improving one piece in the listening chain is the subsequent desire to see what sonic benefits might then come from improving other pieces as well.  While I was quite happy with everything as it was when the Ulysses were the speakers, now I'm seriously looking into possible source improvements.  The Apollo 11's not only significantly improve on the Ulysses, they fit with the room acoustics better; some issues I thought were room problems (through 3 sets of speakers over 12 yrs) now appear to be specific speaker/room interaction problems and have essentially disappeared.  Specifically, a stereo image always slightly to the right of center and an occasionally annoying 45-55 Hz "bump" are no longer a problem.  I suspect these are results of the woofer center 28-29" off the floor and the offset tweeter arrangement.  I've seen a couple of rooms with big "holes" (covered and concealed, of course) in front of speakers with lower woofers to minimize "floor bounce", which I guess in my room is what the bass bump was due to; most listening rooms probably aren't quite dedicated enough to take that solution.

Received my Posedon back last week have not had time to listen to them critically but first impression were certainly a surprise they do sound different ! more Bass as a matter of fact I disconnected my REL S/812 subwoofers , don't seem to need them.
The Bass seems to be more coherent and blends seamlessly with the mids and the new tweeters , when i am close to the tweeters they seem to be a bit shouty , but at the listening position they are blended in perfectly.
The finish on the wood seems to be a bit lighter and glosser wife seems to like this finish better .

Aside from the new tweeters did you have the cap upgrade done; or what other  mods?

hi Asghar, The bass should be unchanged, perhaps they are in a slightly different position in you room?  I have sometimes found that even 1-2" closer or further from the front wall can make an enormous difference in the bass. Very room dependent and sometimes counter intuitive (moving speakers further from the wall but getting increased and improved bass.) The tweeters are brand new and will take a couple hundred hours to break in so initially they will be a bit harsh. Once they are broken in they are much cleaner and more extended thn the old Eton tweeters (which were excellent). The finish we use takes forever to cure but I have found that if after a year or more we clean them up and refinish and buff them it is a much higher gloss and richer finish.
I hope you can set them up to play when you are not home so that you get past the break in of the tweeters :D
be well,
Lou

Thanks ! for chiming in , yes although I have tapes on the floor but they   could be a couple of inches away from the original  position,  either way speakers are nearly 4 feet from the front wall,  laser/ tape measured .
Cheech , had a question I don't know if you want to address that question ? As far as I know  only cross overs for the new tweeters were changed plus rings on the woofers etc

On the Athena speakers I just got from Lou, the treble smoothed out and the bass opened up after some break in time.  They are really amazing speakers, both in appearance and sound.

Since my “new” Apollo 11’s were demo speakers in a previous life, I don’t know how much actual breaking in has occurred, but I can say that I am enjoying them more and more each day.  As I am able to get around to listening to more favorite and familiar recordings I find myself sinking further into the music rather than thinking about the playback system.   These speakers are a dramatic step up, and I’m really glad I overcame any slight reservations I might have had about upgrading.  You’re next, Asghar

for some reason I am not able to upload my pictures of the new set up on AC. but as an update I am using the Poseidon in my HT system for now to break in the new tweeters , I have noticed that after about 30 +plus hours they seem to open up and are much more smoother , Lou tells me that it would take up to 200 hours for them to really break  in

My wife's info will be forwarded so you can repeat the above statement.  When that is done you can select a cd or cable of your choice.  She told my attorney then were scattered about by the trash cart.

Trying to keep things fresh and varrued for the neighbors who usually see us for weekends only.  Who knew things happened through the week.

I actually had one couple down the street ask where I was laid off from?  I replied it was my bad for not checking the schedule for the last eight years for a start time.

She brought us a casserole the next day to help out.

Yikes

In about two weeks, along with the new prices. Sorry but our costs have gone way up and I have not raised prices in at least three years.

Wonderful to hear that the Apollo 11s are magic to your ears

It sounds like your encouraging wife is enjoying them also

I promised Lou a review but I’ve been oh so busy listening
