Danny, that train (desktop speakers) has left the station.  Not being self-powered plus having thin mid-bass/no-bass (appreciate the honest reporting) isn't gonna cut it against in the market place.

Some examples of 'serious'  self-powered speakers that are currently available commercially include:

For single driver design:  Serene Audio, bamboo/leather, compact, three different shapes offered, active by default with DSP, F3 = 70 Hz, $500/pair

For cheaper 2-way designs:  Audioengine A2 and PSB Alpha PS1 both are smaller (guessing), powered designs, F3 = 80 Hz, Stereophile recommended, under $300/pair

For more expensive 2-way designs:  Adam F5 and Paradigm A2, active designs, F3 = 55 Hz, under $600/pair.

It'd be hard to compete with the technical advantages of powered/active designs (as you're already finding with lack of bass) and lack of desktop clutter.

Passive is the only thing I'd consider, except for subs. I've got an AVA Insight+ 250 that I'm very happy with. If I can ever afford it, I'll upgrade to the Synergy.

Danny, these speakers are very appealing. I'd like a ballpark figure on the price as well.

Thanks!

Looks like that by the time I get them here, pay duty, brokerage, and customs clearing fees and add a reasonable margin then I could pass them on for about $29 a piece.

Right now I am seeing if they can increase the X-max a little. Hang in there.

For that price I can definitely do two, depending on the availability of cabinetry, crossover specs and components, etc. I'm a real klutz when it comes to woodworking, not to mention the "oops, now how am I going to play guitar with one hand" factor..

As they say on TV "The Price is Right"
I need to build some good computer speakers.

What would happen with these if a second off axis
driver were added, like top or back firing?
Closed box, ported or not I don't care.

I was thinking along the same lines similar to what Tekton had with the OB4.5.  They used a FOSTEX FE127, I would guess it is similar to the FE125 Danny compared the new speaker to.

You can add a top firing or back firing tweeter to these real easy.

How do you think it would perform as a mid :thumb: Anyhow, that's what I was thinking, just wondered what your professional opinion is Danny. Also, congrats on RMAF. Looking forward to Axpona again this year, it would be awesome to see GR Research there  :thumb:

I like the open baffle idea.  But I'm also intrigued by adding a top-mounted tweeter.

I've been looking for a speaker for a portable system like a boom box. small t-amp with a pure i20 dock. What size would the box have to be?

With the current T/S parameters they are optimal in .12 cubic feet ported. Not very big.
