When it comes to an artist performing as a musical guest on a television show, which ones do you like the best?

  • To whom more was given more will be required.
    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.

I don't remember the exact episode, but it was Kingfish Ingram playing in the club on "Luke Cage". I had never heard of him before, but was blown away by his playing. One of those occasions when it took a minute for my mind to adjust when it went back to the regularly scheduled program.

I've always been luke warm about U2, but their appearance on SNL in 2000 was fantastic. I remember seeing the cast come out to close the show but the band kept playing and the cast (Jimmy Fallon especially) were just giddy to watch U2 play more, so the show closed out with the band still going on. Seems all traces have been removed from the internet, so video link cannot be provided.

Two performances that changed the world as we knew it:

These lads sure could sing, their harmonizing reminds me of the Everly Brothers

The Beatles - On The Ed Sullivan Show - February 16, 1964

Elvis Presley on The Ed Sullivan Show September 9, 1956

"On the variety show, Presley, then 21, was introduced by British actor Charles Laughton, who was filling in for Sullivan that night, as the legendary host was at home recovering from a serious car accident. Presley performed “Don’t Be Cruel,” Little Richard’s “Ready Teddy” and “Hound Dog” and viewers got a full head-to-toe look at the singer despite fears of “vulgar” hip-shaking gyrations."

Mahavhishnu Orchestra - BBC 1972

This is freakishly good!

These guys were all at a different level at this point. Their chops were terrifying.

Here's another performance on a similar level. Return to Forever on the Old Grey Whistle Test on the BBC 1976.
