Title: They've Arrived 04/07/09 (my HT2-TL)
Post by: oneinthepipe on 6 Apr 2009, 11:12 pm
According to FedEx, my HT2-TL are scheduled to be delivered tomorrow.  I am expecting a very exciting and very long day.

Tomorrow is a scheduled office day for me, and I hope that I can concentrate on work and don't succumb to my urges to 1) drive around my neighborhood searching for FedEx trucks (which I have done before); and /or 2) sit at home and wait for the truck (which I have also done before).  When the HT2-TL are delivered, I will need to contact my wife and ask her to immediately drop whatever she is doing, no matter how important she thinks it is, to help me carry the speakers inside the house.  Next comes the unpacking and installation of the plinths and spikes, leveling of the speakers, and connection of the speaker wires.  By then, my wife will want me to help with dinner, and I'll need to play with the kids (and appear that I really want to play with them rather than fire up the speakers).  When that is over, it will be time for me to put the kids to bed, and after they are in bed, I won't be able to play any music, except with the slightest volume, lest I risk waking them up.

As this scenario is foreseeable, drastic measures are necessary, and I think that I will ask my mother-in-law to come over tomorrow night to help with dinner, play with the kids, etc., while I tend to my HT2-TL.  If she appears ambivalent, I'll tell her that my back is starting to feel sore, which will eliminate any ambivalence that she might have had, since a son-in-law with automotive and plumbing and electrical skills is indispensable.  That is my plan.

Just checked FedEx again, and one of the speakers has made it to Willington, CT.  I hope that the other speaker is not far behind.

This calls for extreme measures. Mother-in-law included. If it were me, I'd grab a pizza coupon out of the newspaper and place an order ahead of time, and on the way home, pick up a couple of Ipod nanos for the kids to keep them away for a decade or two. You don't happen to be anywhere near Wash DC??? Which veneer did you get?

I'm sure the time will drag by just fly.
Just be sure to stay away from the bathroom :hyper:.  I've heard horror stories how FedEx drivers rang the doorbell once and drove away before the poor guy could zip it back up.

And congrats on your new speakers :wine:!

Why wait until it is zipped?  These are serious times.  JK :o

Actually, when my ST RT were delivered, even though there were Adult Signature Required labels on both boxes, the boxes were sitting in my driveway, and I drove up as the rain started falling.

UPS is just as bad.  We had some Glock pistols refinished, and since they were "repairs," they didn't need to be returned through an FFL, and I had them shipped to my house rather than to my office.  When I came home, there was a cardboard sleeve holding two "tupperware" boxes, each holding one of the pistols, sitting on my front steps.  In large black type across the cardboard sleeve was "Glock."  There were also the Adult Signature Required labels.

Pizza, that is a great idea.  I'll just have dinner delivered.  If my mother-in-law does not crumble under my veiled threat, I might try to find a babysitter, although my wife might be a little annoyed, since I rarely get a babysitter to watch the kids so I can take my wife out.  The more that I write here, the more I realize the extent of my flaws as a husband how important it is to listen to these speakers tomorrow.

OITP,
great news! BTW, do you still own ST-RT? Anyway, it would be a nice comparison of the two. And, yeah, do not forget to emphasise how important the AVA electronics is for obtaining the best sound with the HT2-TL  :D

Art:

No, I sold the ST RT (with Jim's assistance) a few days after I ordered the HT2-TL.  Regarding the AVA gear, my Insight 440 provides more than 300 watts per channel of clean power into a 4 ohm load.  With my Insight trio's ability to deliver deep bass and clear highs with extraordinary detail and without any perceivable floor noise, the HT2-TL will play without impediment.  I also have a T8+ DAC, and I will be able to experiment a bit with the DACs.

The "bad back" story may look a little suspicious when she sees you lugging around extremely heavy and very large speakers and then flipping them all around to install the plinth & spikes.  Or did you think she wouldn't notice?

Robin:

The veneer is pau dao.  That is the veneer on Nuance's ST RT and the veneer on my former ST RT.  I like the pau doa, and I had a compelling reason to ask Jim to use the same veneer on the HT2-TL that he used on the ST RT, and I hope that no one thinks less of me for the reason.  I have three children, and the younger two are both six years old.  Last year, the children gave me the ST RT for my birthday.  :birthday: Although, after learning about the HT2-TL about two months after my ST RT were delivered, I could never sell, trade, or otherwise dispose of the gift that my wonderful children gave me on my birthday. :peek: (Oh my, what was I thinking when I let my wife give the speakers to them to give me on my birthday?)     Fortunately, the HT2-TL, with the black baffles and black plinths, closely resemble the ST RT, and my children, particularly my two 6 year olds, will assume that the HT2-TL in pau dao veneer are the same speakers that they gave me for my birthday.  :thumb:  The way that they will likely come to this conclusion is a long and boring story that no one wants to hear.   My 12 year old will likely not notice, and if she did, she wouldn't care.  Nevertheless, the children will be happy, and Daddy will be happy.  Hopefully, if the children ever realized that the speakers were different, they wouldn't suffer any irreparable harm.   :o

Congrats, and Best Wishes for a speedy delivery ! A quick trip to HD for a cheapie hand-truck might help avoid some of those back problems, for real. And it's always a handy tool to have around for moving appliances.

Enjoy the 'new' tunes   :thumb:

The ST RT were sold to pay for the HT2-TL.   My daughter gets an old NAD 3240 PE integrated amp, a NAD 5425 CD player, and KEF C65 speakers, if she ever cleans her room, but she has her eyes on my AVA Omega 50 and Linn Tukan speakers.

I had actually ever heard of this veneer before oneinthepipe so I did a search of Salk Circle and the picture of the HT-3 was the only thread to come up. I did scope out Nuance's thread but for all of his lengthy posts, I couldn't find any mention the veneer so I really wasn't sure if maybe this was the same type Rosewood as the AV123 Rockets usually come in.

Cheers,
Robin

Heres what Wiki has to say:
Pao ferro or pau ferro (Caesalpinia echinata or Machaerium scleroxylum Tul.) is an exotic tree found in Brazil and Bolivia. Its wood is often used for making fingerboards for basses and electric guitars. It has a similar feel and similar tonal attributes to rosewood, but has a slightly lighter colour. The wood may also be used for flooring, fancy furniture, and handgun grips. It is also known by the names morado, palo santos, caviuna, Brazilian ironwood, and Bolivian rosewood, though it is not actually rosewood.
In guitar making, pao ferro is not only used for fingerboards but also can be used for the back and sides of the guitar. Brazilian guitar maker, Giannini, uses the wood in many of its classical guitars.[1] Although similar in many ways to rosewood, pao ferro does have slightly different tonal qualities.
For example Stevie Ray Vaughan's Signature Fender Stratocaster comes with a Pao Ferro fingerboard.

...and I thought it was a Rosewood.  :D
I hope they get there safe and sound...  are you getting any sleep tonight?

No, no sleep for me, but not because of the speakers.

Pau ferro is beautiful wood, and I have some handgun (1911-style) grips from pau ferro, cocobolo, kingwood, and arizona desert ironwood burl.  I have a pair of Spendor S3/5A speakers in burl walnut, which is very nice, and I like a lot of the woods that Jim has been using, especially the swirly bubinga.  The pau ferro speakers will be very nice, however. My former ST RT in pau ferro were beautifully finished.

People here are generally aware of the Birth Certificate that comes with Salk speakers.  It is a somewhat better kept secret :shh: that Jim also provides a certified (ahem) doctor's note attesting to the fact that you were too sick to go to work on the very same day that your speakers were delivered.  You must be another sufferer of Audiophilic Nirvana Nervosa.  Take two of these

Thank you for your get well wishes.  I feel better already.  Amazing what a new pair of HT2-TL and some ibuprofen will do.

The speakers arrive unscathed.  I installed the plinths and the spikes and have been listening to the speakers for a few minutes.  The 1st song that I played, at my middle daughter's request, was Aqualung.  The drums were powerful enough to send my youngest daughter running into the other room.  Since then, I have been listening to Norah Jones.  The sound is outstanding.  They have all the attributes of the ST RT and more-so.  Jim did a beautiful job with the veneer.

While I was waiting for the HT2-TL, following bpape's suggestions, I increased the thickness of my absorption panels, except for the side wall 1st and 2nd reflection points, were are still 2" OC703, and installed bass traps.  The increased thickness of the absorption panels and the installation of bass traps greatly improved the room.

My middle daughter is pretty astute, and she remarked that Jim made the speakers wider.  I think that she was referring to depth, because the HT2-TL are noticeably deeper than the ST.

In the meantime, I have to get the shipping boxes to the basement and clean up the kids' mess before my wife comes home.

I will post some photos later.

And I thought that Dr. Murphy was the attending.  Nevertheless, since I work with my wife (or work for my wife, from my staff's perspective), the doctor's note doesn't help very much.  Actually, since the kids had fevers and couldn't go to school, one of us needed to stay home with them, and my wife was happy to go to work.  The kids have started running around the house, and they appear to feel better, too.

Obviously, I lack any photography skills, but I will try to enlist my wife's help later.

Nevertheless, here are some photos.

Here is the FedEx truck in the driveway.  As you can see, there is light rain.  My silver Jag X-Type is parked in front.  My lawn needs a lot of help, but we don't use chemical fertilizer or pesticides because the kids play on the lawn.

Here, the FedEx driver is preparing to leave my speakers in the middle of the driveway in the rain.  Adult Signature Required?  I must have missed that.  Luckily, I came out before he could unload the other speaker and take off.

This is the front of the right speaker.  The photos do not do justice to the beautiful finish.

Nice FedEx truck pic.  :P :D

Beautiful finish on the speakers sir.  Seeing Nuance's pics of his reminded me how beautiful they really are.

OITP - CONGRATULATIONS!! on the new addition to your household. I also think it's great that you are getting the next generation of Salk owners involved already. Enjoy.

I went another route and had my Mother in Law wait for and receive them.  She was very patient during the 9 day hold up in customs.

I hope that you left her with some snacks, at least.  Nine days.  That is a good mother-in-law.

Great looking speakers, OITP!  Any chance you can take some clearer pictures?

My wife promised me that she will take some photos, but she told me that I have to carry the speakers outside.  I think that I will have to wait until the weekend, since we both work full time and are rarely home together in the day during the work week.   :inlove:

She also had to learn to hold her pee.  She was afraid that she would miss the delivery man

OITP, congrats, I think those are nice looking speakers, but it is a bit hard to tell from the pics. You shouldn't take speaker pics while you are actually jumping up and down for joy

Excellent FedEx truck shots!
