Title: New speaker naming contest...Win a pair of Micros!
Post by: Brian Bunge on 27 Jun 2003, 03:42 am
Here's an opportunity to win a free pair of RAD Micros!

I'm in the process of developing a new tower speaker and am not very good at coming up with names.  So I thought I'd start a contest and give away a pair of Micros to the person who comes up with the winning name.

Here are the particulars about the speakers.  The cabinets are 44"H x 6.5"W x 14.5"D.  There are 9 of the Tang Band W3-871S drivers which are all the rage right now along with a prototype of a new GR Research high efficiency silk dome tweeter.  There are four 2" ports in the back of the cabinet and they should have an F3 around 65Hz.  Due to the multiple drivers and the high efficiency tweeter it doesn't take much power for them to get loud.  Crossover design is still in the works but I hope to have that done in the next 3-4 weeks.  These particular cabinets are wrapped in oak veneer, stained with a Minwax Antique Red stain, and finished with gloss polyurethane.

So here are the particulars for the contest.  To enter, simply post your entry in this thread, as well as sending an email titled "RAD Contest" with your entry to brian@rutledgeaudiodesign.com.  Feel free to enter as often as you like.  The deadline for entering is July 15th at midnight EDT.

Also, feel free to ask any questions you may have about the new speakers within this thread.  I'm also considering a center channel with the same drivers for those that want to use these in a HT setup and the Micros make excellent surrounds.

OK, so let the games begin! :)

My vote is 'Radiant'.  It continues the 'RAD' name, but is more elegant and gives the impression of sound radiating from the speakers.

BTW: The certainly look interesting.  Any idea on the price range?

How 'bout the Infinitum?  It matches the seemingly endless number of drivers, implies some level of infinitely good sound, and also sounds real Latiny.

I like Brad's idea of Radiant, but here is my idea...

Was curious about the effects of comb filtering and how you got around it.

Brad,

The projected price will be around $850/pr. depending on the finish.  With something like this stain the price would go up as there's so much more work involved.

Josh,

With a low enough XO point comb filtering isn't an issue.

I understand the additional cost/work.  I'm currently working on my custom finish pair of Ascends and it's turning out to be a lot of work - more than I expected, but I'm enjoying it so far.

Okay, here goes:

1.  The Perfect 10's.  (a fine magazine...) Plus they have 10 drivers...
2.  Symphony (big sound...).
3.  The RAD Miles (after Miles Davis...).
4.  Everest
5.  RAD Matrix
6.  Neons
7.  Electraglides (big and sleek like the bike)
9.  Magnums (after my preferred brand of ...)
10.  RAD Masters
11.  RAD TRT's (Transparent Reference Transducers)
12.  RAD Macro's (opposite of Micro!) :)

That's all I got...

Who is Greenberg?   :?

I was trying to combine some terms I have stumbled across (literally) and thought "Transparent " would work well for speakers.  "Reference" is used a lot but it sounds cool and "Transducers" is a nice confusing word for speakers.  The letters TRT seem to flow nicely.  Plus, I really want those micros and was really racking my brain!

Brian, these look very cool.

Being a gear head, I like:

Inline Nine
(or Inline 9)

Sounds like a screaming motor. small bore, short stroke, should be good for around 15,000 rpms! :)

I was going to come back and post 'radical', but the thread has taken off and KKM proposed that long ago.  I'll second 'radical', but as the name for the center channel.  :)

You've got a ton of ideas already - seems like the contest was a good idea.

Randog: I like your Inline 9 one.

I think RAD Nein is a nice double entendre.

I like the Inline 9 suggestion as you can extend the name to a wide line of TB driver-based speakers, from a 2 woofer small bookshelf to a 4 woofer large bookshelf, to a 6 woofer small tower, etc.

Well rad is 'wheel' in German and nein is 'no', so I'm guessing he means it also can be read as 'not a wheel' or something like that.

Oops, maybe its a little too far out.  Nein sounds like nine, and the speaker does have 9 Tang Band drivers.  Nein also means "no"... RAD No?   :P

Perhaps this is the first speaker in RADical line up. And it looks to be a classic..

So my $$ is for RADical Classic.

Brian would follow it up with RADical Center, & RADical Surrounds/Monitors & Radiance Subwoofer ;)

He would then develop another better & bigger line-up and call them ...well, Brian can save them for another contest ;)

Cheers,
Kishore

Oops noticed that KKM proposed RADical...oh well :)

I musta been pretty tired to not at least remember that "nein" was German for no.  Especially considering Bunge is German.  Duh!:)

Currently the Micros are my surrounds (at least small surrounds) but a similar sub and center are definitely on my "to do" list.

Title: Speaker Name
Post by: thomaco on 2 Jul 2003, 01:13 pm
You could stick with your current naming convention and go with:
T-2   the next tower number (and movie connotations)
    T-9   for the 9 drivers
T-10  for the total number of drivers (and is similar to the Lexicon numbering tradition -- MC-1 to MC-12 and then MC-8)

Or I like a grander name:
    RAD Ultimate(s)
    RAD Ultimate Tower
or to be a bit sillier with this:
    Ultimate RAD
    Ultimately RAD
or to borrow from the previous suggestions
    Ultimately RADical

Brian, did you have a particular feeling you wanted the name to invoke?  Excitement, relaxing, etc.

A couple more ideas:

RAD TB-9 (for the TangBand drivers)
Column 9
Columna Nueve (it has a bit more of a romantic sound in Spanish)
Altavoz Nueve (another Spanish option - 'speaker nine')

Brad,

I hate to try to "direct" the contest one way or another, but I'm interested in more exciting names.  The speakers really grab you visually even moreso in person and I'd like the name to capture that.

John,

Of course you're allowed to enter.  I like the solar system idea too, but just for the record, any name having to do with Uranus will NOT win!

Sometimes I surprise myself.  Maybe I should quite my day job and become a reviewer for TAS.

Okay, here's mine:  MARS (the red planet)

I think when Brian ordered his medium red mahogony dye, he said:  "Okay, I'll take one", and the supplier thought he meant one case instead of one bottle.

Hank,

Actually, I'm all out of the dye.  We did these with one coat of dye and two coats of Minwax Antique Red stain.  What I really wanted was about 5-6 coats of the dye as it gives you a black cherry look to the veneer and looks really awesome with a gloss finish.

BTW, I've got the sub just about ready to put the poly on it.  Should look cool with the front firing aluminum cone 8" driver! :guitar:

Aluminum cones, yes!   I assume that by now, you all know that Brian has a fetish for aluminum cone drivers.  Post photos.
BTW, I received my shipment of BoseBuster/Micro drivers yesterday, as well as the parts for a pair of Danny's A/V-3's, as well as the parts for two towers and a center channel from another source.   UPS should send me a Christmas present this year.

Hank,

We should have photos of the sub by early next week.  We'll be offering it with a matching baseplate just like on the towers for a nominal upcharge!:)

  Is that like when you talk to a car salesman and he says there is a nominal upcharge if you want a steering wheel to go along with the new car?

Hank,
:)

I just got the baffle step compensation on the speakers a few days ago.  Made a huge difference in the sound.  Granted, they're in my dining room, but I can feel snare drum whacks pretty good from 6' or so away.

Wait a minute...build your own, pardner! :nono:

Just close this thing early and admit that "Mars" is THE name.  In lieu of two Micro's, send me a sexy Georgia girl for the prize.

OK, time's up and we've got a winner!

The winning name is Pulsar 9 (probably Pulsar 9.1 due to the single tweeter) submitted by Steven Jeffcoat (jcoat007).

Congrats Steve and thanks to all those who entered.

I'll be posting pics of the new sub in a new thread in a day or two for anyone who may be interested.

Wooooooooooooooo Hoooooooooooooooo!!! :thankyou:

With the exception of the $300 Million Dollar Power Ball, I have never won anything in my life.

Of course I'm kidding.

Thanks Brian.  This is really cool!!!

p.s. I still can't believe you didn't choose my favorite one:  The Huggy Bear Super Slamma Jamma.  The marketing tie-ins are endless with the remake of Starsky and Hutch coming out soon.  Snoop Dog is playing Huggy Bear.  He could do the endorsements.  You could offer a version in red with a white stripe.  Oh, but I digress.

Thank you very much.  I have a spot already picked out for them.

Steve

Steve,

I was going to announce that the Huggy Bear Slamma Jamma was the winning name but at midnight I was too tired to be witty! :)

Respond to my email from last night and we'll get you squared away.

I noticed this is a "sticky", so assumed Brian was having another speaker-naming contest, but nooooo...Metal cone-head Brian fooled me!
You're a dastardly, low-down, mangey varmint polecat, Brian.
