Downfiring version of AV12 sub

Here are some pictures of the sub I was talking about but in a downfiring configuration.  In order for this to work we had to enlarge the enclosure.  A 14" cube wouldn't work because there would not be enough clearance for the driver frame and the amp's transformer.  So we went with a 15"W x 15"D x 16.75"H enclosure.  We then added roughly 3" high feet.

These first two pics show the raw MDF enclosure:

These next images show the finished enclosure with the driver, amp and from a front view sitting next to my Pioneer Elite 53" RPTV.

Let me know what you guys think!

Brian, they look just fine, except for those "feet" that look like they belong on your aunt's antique furniture.
Seriously, I think you may have a winner there for a minimum size sub!

Thanks Hank...I think!:)  The feet aren't the greatest, but they work and I think they look better than using 1" dowels or oak 2x2's.

John,

I've been doing some critical listening.  I'm going to play around a bit more with baffle step compensation.  I think I may have a bit too much right now.

Andrew,

I guess those would work if someone wanted them.  I'm not a big fan of that style of legs personally.  But whatever floats your boat! :)

I'd really like something around 2" in diameter, 3" high because even with the weight of this sub I like beefy legs so that there won't be any problems sliding it across a carpeted floor.

The look may not be for everyone, but what is nice is that they are self-levelling and have glides to protect floors... which sounds good to a know-nutin' like me!   :P

Brian, I have to apologize for not replying to your email sooner.     Have been travelling a lot for work, and have not gotten the hours on the RAD Micros that I would have liked...  doesn't help tha the dvd player I've got hooked up in the bedroom has died...  Speakers are looking good, though, on the table at the foot of my bed!

I agree, on hardwood floors they'd probably be great to use.  I just think they're a little too industrial looking to me.  And you know me.  I like wood! :)

I was wondering if you'd been traveling a lot or something.  Otherwise, I'd have to assume you hated the speakers, were pissed at me, and didn't want to respond to my emails.  Glad to here it was the former and not that latter.

Quite to the contrary!  I think the speakers sound very nice... I had them in my main system (I disconnected my nOrh 9.0s for a few days) and was perfectly content with the sound quality (quite a feat given what the 9.0 is capable of!).  The only problem, Brian, was some rudeness on my part... I really should have replied sooner.     Sometimes, the longer your delay, the harder it is to get over the embarrassment of being late.   :|

Anyway, everyone, Brian was great to deal with and helped me to do a custom finish for my RAD Micros that matched my furniture very well.  They fit the bill for my bedroom perfectly.  The AV12-based sub looks quite interesting!  I'm not ready for a sub yet, though a small foot print like this is very appealing!

No problem at all.  I'm just happy that you like them.  It's got to be a real bitch buying something from half way around the world that you've never even heard.

If you want to make it up to me, just get me orders for about 5-10 more pair from your friends and family in Hong Kong! :D
