Title: Finally got dream car (mostly)
Post by: drphoto on 22 Jul 2016, 01:26 am
Well I guess real dream car would be an M3, but I'm not made of money. Got a mint '12 (Mk6) Golf Sportwagen. Yep even after the VW fiasco, although mine is the 2.5L gasser. I would have actually gone for the TDI, thinking I could steal one, and they're great motors in other ways.

I think VW builds terrific cars now, even with all the noise and lawsuits. Yes, they had some quality issues back w/ the Mk4's but have really stepped it up.

This car has the interior fit and finish of an Audi. Ok it's light on techno wiz features, but I don't care. I don't want to use phone in car. That's my time. Some of best seats I've ever tried.

It makes me smile ever time I drive it. The handling is fantastic. Will get even better when I install the box of factory approved sport springs and shock. It's no rocket off the line but it will flat out rip up corners. I can hang with a WRX or pretty much any mid level sporty car in that arena. But I can still haul all of my photo gear.

Oh.....the sound system sort of blows, but I'm not gonna upgrade, as that's a financial black hole.

cheers

Nice.  Have been looking at VW lately.

It would be very appropriate if you attached a pic of two;)

sure, soon as I figure out how, been away for a long time from site. I'm a pro photographer but haven't shot any other than phone snaps. Got pretty nice one from dealer

I like wagons and I own a VW myself, but the Golf Sportwagen cannot "hang" with a WRX.

How fast is a Golf Sportwagen?  It has a 0-60 time of about 8.4 seconds.  The WRX?  About 5.0 seconds.  If you're hanging with a WRX, it's because the driver isn't trying very hard.
Title: Re: Finally got dream car (mostly)
Post by: drphoto on 22 Jul 2016, 04:06 am
didn't say fast in a straight line. we were even in corner and then he smoked me in the straight. ok? I think I pissed him off when he saw what he thought was mommy car right there  beside on the freeway ramp at like, I dunno 65 mph or so?? So I mean I can hang with them on handling.

Motor has some decent torque. you can easily spin tires off line and it will occasionally torque steer when you hit second in sport or manual shift. (yes I have to make do with the lowly tiptronic tranny. No fancy DSG or 6 speed for those who go gas motor) At least this power train is considered fairly bullet proof and requires very little service. No timing belt change, no 40K tranny fluid flush, etc......

Yeah, even if I get a cold air kit, a cat back and an ECM flash, I be lucky to run 190 hp. may drop 0-60 by maybe a second. It's not a sports car. But it handles way better than a wagon should. I'd rather flog a twisty back road anyway than go super fast. There is no way I'm going to try to add turbo, way too much money and motor not built for it. Hell, just get a Gti or Golf R if wanna street race.

When I install  those DG/Eibach springs and Koni sports should be even better and look mean, sitting an inch lower.

I work in a trauma center right now, as I'm helping out & taking a leave from photo work & I see enough idiots crashing their cars.

BTW: my car came with dealer installed factory 18" wheels (goal style for you VW fans) which means 40 series tires. These are Goodyear/Dunlop. and may contribute to some of the handling prowess. They're all season tires, but they suck in snow.....I mean zero traction. However they do well on wet or dry pavement. They are don't seem to wear excessively despite my heavy hand, but noisy and man do you feel every road shock.

Ok, I will admit, WRX boy probably could take me in a corner too if really wanted.

I love the WRX, but they dropped the hatch for the states, because US buyers are idiots, who want sedans or SUV/crossovers.

But I think the subies have crappy ass interiors.

I'll take my lesser VW with it's subtle but refined german (but yes mexican built) styling any day.

And if I get smoked by a kid in street racer, I'll just see him later in my ER.  :duh:

And did not mean to offend Subie owners. The WRX has it's charms. But I just like the the VW interiors. That was sorta a make or break thing for me.

I love the Focus/Fiesta ST's. Riot to drive, but I hate the interiors on those too. Just way to cluttered dash.I gotta live with this thing as daily driver.

If and when I can have a second 'real' sports car, I'll find a trashed early Mazda Mx5 Miata and build a track special.

Congrats on getting your (mostly) dream car.

While I have your dream car (a 2009 Space Gray M3), I still haven't snagged my dream car -  Porsche 911 Turbo S.

That would not only fulfill a life long dream, it would complete my German car journey:

VW GTI -> Audi S4 Avant -> BMW 335 and M3 -> Porsche 911 Turbo S

Enjoy the car.

Never having been a real car nut, I'm still embarrassed to admit my favorite car was our 2001 Toyota Sienna.  It was economical (just routine service and tires for 256,000 miles), averaged 25 mpg, had good hauling capacity (including a trailer and roof rack), and was supremely comfortable with the chair-like seating.  IMO the most handsome mini-van ever.
Title: Re: Finally got dream car (mostly)
Post by: drphoto on 22 Jul 2016, 02:09 pm
Hey, JLM, I hear you loud and clear. I drove a Town & Country van that I bought for cash for the past 6 or 7 years. I got it when my father was still alive, and was easier to get him in and out of that, than the SUV I had before. It was a great vehicle. I could haul a ton of crap. Way better than my Trooper SUV for that, was more comfortable, a pretty decent Infinity sound system,  better milage than truck (still sucked)  and I clocked 250K mi w/ just normal replacement parts. I still have it and plan to keep for winter use and to haul stuff.

But I got a new car for 2 reasons, 1) I'm a commercial photographer. Image is all, I can't take out a client or roll up to a shoot at a multimillion dollar property (do a lot of hi end architecture projects) in some hoopty van. Now granted a wagon is not considered cool, but it's a sharp car and people will just right it off as the quirky artist thing.

2) It's just damn fun to drive. The van was great...... but good god it bored me to death. Driving was a chore.

Golf R......be still my beating heart. That might rival my choice of M3 as ultimate. I'm a simple guy. I'f I won the lotto (which I don't play.....i've had 2 classes in statistics along the way!) I would not buy a Lambo, or any other super car. I might be temped by a Tesla, as I think Elon Musk is just a modern day genius. (even with all the blunders and stuff) I'd admire someone who is trying to change the world. I could be wrong (often am) but I think his heart is in the right place.

As I tend to do, I've turned this into one long ramble, but yeah.....I'm a  VW guy.

I think one thing they've screwed up on big time (no not TDI) is how they spec the MK7. If you want a stick in the wagon, you have to go for the base model. But it no longer comes std with heated seats (gods.... meaning engineers......little gift to mere mortals are heated seats) But you can't option them in! Or get any fun goodies like HID lights, then you have to move up in trims and only get the tiptoe tranny. Way too much focus on cost savings I'm afraid. But the MQB platform is supposed to be 'all that'. However, I personally like the styling of my Mk6. I like the rounded bits more than the current angular style.

I think VW lost their way when they set their sights on beating Toyota in global sales. They gotta realize, they are essentially a niche car company. They build near luxury cars for the few who get it. Or may be happy with just that and don't need a big brand name badge on their car to ensure their sense of self worth.

It's funny, at the hospital, you see a lot of first year residents driving GTI's. Then the higher ups move on to their Audi or BMW, etc

crap, I'm rambling again....sorry.

drphoto, you might want to confirm that those DG/Eibach springs are fixed rate springs rather than a variable rate spring. The variable rate springs are never the same twice during cornering, due corner entry speed, line chosen and corner radius, among other factors. As result you can't learn the car's handling characteristics and post a consistent lap time due to the handling variability.
They were experimented with by Formula One back in the 60s and discarded for the aforementioned reasons.
If Koni makes shocks featuring adjustable rebound and compression for your car, go for them, they are the cat's meow and allow you to dial the car's suspension in precisely.
When you are done with the car's suspension mods watch out for expansion joints and dimes in the middle of the road they are going to be killers.

Congrats drphoto!

I had a few VWs, 79 Rabbit, 84 GTI, 98 Jetta K2. All of them were great fun and reliable. I got to drive a lot of VWs even a vanagon in 1990 when I worked as a lot boy for Berge VW in Culver City CA. I LOVE the look of the mk7 Golf Sportwagen, even prettier than the new Golf imho, beautiful lines!  The mk6 is a pretty car too, that's for sure!

My dream car would also be Porsche, but the newer Porsches have less appeal to me, although last year's boxster was gorgeous. I'd like a '89 911 coupe, and/or a '65 365C coupe. I love watching 911 engine rebuilds on yootoob.  I recently got my wife's hand me down '08 328, it's more a luxury car but it drives great - big change from my old Odyssey van.  :thumb:

Guy13, my grandfather had one of those convertible TBirds, all white. I remember riding in it in 1969 or so when I was 5yo. My 3yo little sister snuck out of the house, climbed in and put it into neutral, rolling slowly back into the middle of the parking lot.

I had a new '10 Sportwagen TDI for a couple years. Really loved the car functionally, brought great driving pleasure, generally trouble free, good mileage (though it cheated!), low cost to own. I actually had good dealer service, unlike most. Being in NE Indiana I put 4 winter wheels/tires on it and had no issues getting around.

Unfortunately, that little bit about the intercooler being mounted low enough to ingest water and/or melting snow/ice directly to the intake was a fatal flaw (hydro-locking). It took them many months to even admit, much less devise a fix. Just plain stupid engineering. After ~10months back and forth, I dumped it for an Audi A4 Avant S-Line 2.0t, which was essentially the same car, a gasser, all gussied up for Audi.

Maybe my definition of "dream car is different then others, but most of those are no dream cars; VW's are everyday cars. I'm actually considering getting a Golf GTI as my next car if they still make it then. It's not a dream car. I thought I saw a Golf the other day but it was a Kia since all modern cars look like each other.

A dream car is a Koenigsegg, McLaren, or Ford GT. It has to be fast, expensive, and looks the part.

Everyone has their own idea of a dream car.  The super cars would be a nightmare to own: expense (insurance, maintenance); worries (theft, vandalism, accidents); and not practical (capacity, range, poor weather handling, jealousy from others, can only open it up at a track).  You'd be a slave to it - not worth it.  A former neighbor had a Porsche 912 that stayed under a tarp 350 days of the year.  He got it out on fair weather days, tried to tune it up, then drove it 5 miles (a loop on/off the freeway), washed/waxed it, and put it away.  Meanwhile his everyday wheels, an Audi Fox, had to be parked outside where it rusted and he scrapped snow/ice from it.  Sorry to throw cold water on your dream.   :(

A smaller car, like a Miata, can be more fun in the real world and much easier to live with.

No argument from me to Dieterle or Mix. I love exotic cars. Love to see them on "Top Gear" etc.

But, no shit. If you gave me $10 million right now. I would not buy a supercar. Maybe a Tesla S just because they are so cool.

I'd sure as hell hire a pro driver to take me to a track and teach me to drive. And then maybe I'd dump money into building a Miata or M3 race car.

And maybe I'd get a resto mod 70 Chevelle convertible to just take out every other sunday after a day of relaxing at my villa in Monaco.  :D

Oh to Scotty. These tires grip pretty good when no snow. Considered switching to summer performance be lot of money and they wear out fast. Wanted Michelin Pilot Sport, but if I go summer......maybe Goodyear Eagle F1?? lot less cash.

Hey remind me how you upload a pic please!

I'd go Michelin even though they are more money. I've owned a WRX since 2009 (2 different ones) and the Michelon Pilot Super Sport tires are amazing AND come with a mileage guarantee! And no $hit, they actually lasted 3 summers... maybe 2 depending on when you'd get rid of them but summer tires get worn to at least the wear bars on my cars.

For winter Michelin Pilot Alpin... also amazing. These do well in the snow, not quite as good as an all-out snow tire, but really well... and the have 75% of the performance of the Pilot SS on dry pavement, plus they don't lose lots of traction < 50 deg F like the Pilot SS do. I live in CO so I need tires that work well in the snow but the vast majority of driving is on dry pavement even in the winter.

Anyway, nice car! I'd take a Golf R over my WRX anytime, just not willing to pay the extra $10k or so... ;)  Plus cost of ownership of Subaru Impreza models is amazingly low. My last WRX I sold for a $3k loss after 4 years and 68k miles! ...an insurance settlement for hail damage was involved, but still... that's $62.50/mo! My previous Impreza before that one cost me $125mo for similar time/mileage. And I don't have to worry about major repair bills as the car is under warranty. Gotta love all the folks that will never consider purchasing a new car on principle... sometimes it's the best way to go. :)

When I was running a modified Mustang GT, I used the top of the line B.F. Goodrich tire which was very good at that point in time. The rankings seem to change at least once year. The sticky ones definitely go away just like an eraser. At one point in time I went through two sets of the top of line Dunlops in one year. Super glue on the road but I couldn't afford to keep them on the car.  :(

It's AMAZING how good modern tires are.

I remember in the early 90's my new car with 205/55/16 tires (big/low profile at the time, lol...) wore through it's tires in 12k miles or so, if you're lucky. Now the Pilot Super Sport is both far better than the older tires in terms of performance and they last about 3x as long. My winter tires would outperform summer tires from the mid 90s and last way longer too.... :)

I didn't burn rubber off stoplights, I couldn't afford to. The car had road racing gears and suspension mods. 3 degree car, completely the opposite spring rates and shock absorber damping characteristics from a drag racing setup.

We have a 2010 VW Jetta wagon (diesel) and a 2006 Subaru Outback (just traded in to buy Honda Pilot).  The Subaru had many problems, such as broken rear axle and broken strut. We paid thousands of dollars for fixes in the last few years.  The VW has had needed the rear spray/wiper replaced (not sure how it got damaged, but it did) and a window regulator replaced.  Can't directly compare the two, though, as I'd need to own the VW for another 4 years to see what happens to it.  Since they're buying it back, that won't happen.

And everybody is talking about German brand station wagons. German cars have become so common that they could never become special. If you go to places like Germany, they have become so common it has watered-down the prestige of those brands. Most of what you see on the autobahn is German wagons.

My last GF worked for a Porsche racing team and sold parts online from several local German auto shops. After seeing how much German car parts go for and how much work they need (in general) I'd never own one that wasn't under warranty. They seem needlessly complex and expensive. For me, a car is an appliance, not an identity...

I don't think a VW wagon is exactly a prestige car. I got it because I like the look, can haul my stuff, is a riot to drive. and looks good enough to show up driving on a high dollar photoshoot.

There's a certain elegance to VW and Audi sheet metal, while perhaps boring to some, conveys the feeling of a good fitting well-tailored suit.

Many cars (particularly Japanese and Korean) are so inundated with creases and swoops that they look hokey.  I only want my car to look like it's going downhill .... when it's going downhill.

I love what Ford is doing lately. BTW: they build the Escape right here in my hometown. I shot picture at that plant when it made the Explorer.

Car factories are way cool. Fun to see.

Focus ST was on my list of possibles when I was shopping.

I rented a Fiesta once when my van was in shop. For a base econo box. It was hella fun to drive. I sorta hated giving it back.  :)

Sweet choice on the new ride. I just returned from S. Calf. visiting my son and his pride and joy (not counting my granddaughter, of course!) is his Audi A3 sportwagon. I got to drive it on the twisters on Mount Palomar and the driving sensation, design, fit and finish left me green eyed with sinful envy. My daily is an RX-8 and the weekend car is a 1972 911. Before the Mazda I had a WRX. We have also had a GTi through the family motor pool that I still regret letting go of. There is just something about the tactile sensation of the VW/Audi and other German sports cars. Everything is so perfectly weighted and damped.

To post the requested pics is easy. Step 1 is get the pic on the web, I see you have a AudioCircle gallery you can upload them to. Step 2 is while in the 'Post reply' GUI of AudioCircle with cursor where you want image use the Insert Image button (first on the second row, icon is a tiny Mona Lisa) then below the edit screen use the 'Select and insert an image from your gallery' button. It will allow you to select the pic you want to go in the post.

Thanks Norman. Yeah, I searched high and low for one of those A3 wagons. Rare as 'hens teeth' as they used to say back in the country.

along with Gti's I do see a few first year residents at hospital driving them, before they move up the ranks and on to the big dollar cars.

Unfortunately Audi surrendered to the pressure of the US market and only imports the A3 sedan now.

I don't look at VW or entry Audi as any sort of 'status' vehicle. I just love that they get it all right. from the design, to the interior quality to the driving dynamics. And lately they've gotten the quality way up. Yes they do cost a lot to maintain. but if you do the service I don't think they fail all that much. But you can't just drive them and forget the service. Yes, you can run the snot out of a Toyota and get away with it. But you couldn't give me one. (sorry toyota fans) Their cars just bore me to death. (although that sports car, called the 2000 I think in the 60's was the shit......and the Supra was pretty bad ass)

People in the US just don't like wagons or hatches for some very strange reason. I mean I can haul as much gear as a compact 'crossover' and pull 0.9 g in a turn? Hell yes. I suppose I do get the fact that people like to sit up high. It is a little intimidating being down low when everything else towers.  But I'll sure have a lot more fun along the way.

Uhhh. if that uploaded, correctly, that image has been photoshopped to show projected 1" drop from when I install the sport suspension.

Looks real clean.
Are there any reports of front wheel well rubbing during cornering after the drop in suspension height?
Also can static negative camber be dialed in on the front struts as well as some more positive caster if needed for high speed stability?
Scotty
Title: Re: Finally got dream car (mostly)
Post by: drphoto on 25 Jul 2016, 12:43 am
Scotty I don't anticipate any issues. It really isn't much of a drop. I think the pic is a bit misleading. It's basically the same as a GTI suspension plus the added bonus of the Koni shocks. I will have realignment done by VW dealer. I really don't think it will need any camber adjustment.

I'm not into to that 'slammed' look. I think it's just stupid. Ruins the handling. I wanna make it better. It's already good. Should be a riot after upgrade. I will try and then decide if I wanna run a stiffer rear sway bar.

And as mentioned earlier, I plan on cold air, cat back and maybe ECM refresh. I don't expect miracle gains. Any cold air that claims 20 hp is bullshit.

And I don't really care about speed. But motor is a little slow to spin up. Once you get into power band it does pretty well. Yeah somebody said car test at 8.4 zero to 60, but I bet that was in std d mode on tranny. I'm gonna have to time it in sport. Seems way quicker. I'm guessing maybe 7. Yeah, not gti quick, but hey, it's not a turbo motor either. But I get better reliability I suppose......

Maybe mods will drop it into 6 sec range. Be pretty cool for a sleeper wagon.

Yes, we met at one of those a long time ago. Rob's still kicking around, not so much audio, just having fun with his rural property last I heard. Kids in college, etc.

What's wrong with this world?

Just as well.  Can't afford one and the maintenance would probably be a nightmare (Alfa's have never been known to be reliable and now owned by FCA plus the nearest dealership is 60+ miles away).

VW is definitely not a status vehicle.  It's really a younger person's vehicle, except for the wagons, which older folks drive.

Not everyone in the US dislikes hatchbacks.  I've owned a Saab 9-3 Viggen (thus, my moniker) hatchback, then a VW Jetta "Sportwagen" (but TDI, so VW will be buying back), and now a Chevy Volt hatchback.  Even in my Saab, I hauled a washing machine and many other items.  The least useful of the three is the Volt, mainly because you cannot install a roof rack.  Two weeks ago, we went to get a couch from Costo.  It came in three boxes.  For one box, we put that in my wife's Honda Pilot.  We put one in my VW, and one on the roof (tied down with four ratcheting tie downs).  And I regularly take the VW to the big box stores to get wood and materials for projects.  The only thing I can't get is 4x8 sheets of plywood, drywall, etc., unless I want to put those on the roof and tie them down.   I'll have to see if our Honda Pilot can take those on the inside.

I read a review once of a BMW wagon (I think it was the 5 series), and they compared it to one of BMW's SUVs.  They said the wagon was cheaper, faster, got better gas mileage, had more interior storage space, drove much better...pretty much beat the SUV in every single category.  Yet BMW sold way more SUVs than wagons in the US.

I'd love to drive a good sport wagon, except for 2 things: 1)  I wrecked my back a few years ago, and as a result most of my lumbar region (L3-S1) is bolted together.  Hence I have limited flexibility and I have difficulty / pain getting into and out of cars - they sit too low.  2) I work at a hospital and am considered essential personnel (don't know why, mine is a IT function), so I need to be able to get to work.  I used to drive an Audi A6. but that bottomed out in a few snow storms, so I need more clearance.  So I drive a BMW X3 now - it "behaves" almost like a car - little body roll and virtually no plow - but has easy egress/ingress and sufficient clearance.

I drove an FPace the other day, loved the engine (a slightly de-tuned FTYPE), and everything else was OK, until I learned that you needed to buy the tech package to get a CD player.   That's almost 3 grand to play CDs.  Besides, the wife didn't like the high hood.  Also took a GLC for a short run.  That was promising, slightly tighter than the X3.

Congrats on your purchase. I always liked VW cars, even owned a 1995 GTI and a 2000 Jetta. The Jetta left a bad taste in my mouth as to VW's reliability, so I will probably not buy another. My Toyota 4-runner which I bought to replace the Jetta has been much more reliable and it is also fun to drive.

I have a rare bird VW, MK 5 2007 Wolfsburg with a 2.0L Turbo.  Does 32 MPG hwy and still 0-60 in around 6s becasue it has the DSG 6 spd from that year.  It is beat to hell thanks to the way my wife drives it but still runs like a gem with 100k miles on it.  I will probably drive it until the wheels fall off.

I always thought I wanted some over the top dream car, but I just want something paid off.  We are on the market for an old Touareg 2 with new kids on the way.  Love me some VW and Audi.

here's just a quick snapshot of car. In no way does this demonstrate how I can shoot cars if getting paid BTW!!  :)

When install suspension the wheel opening will close up. But it will not look 'slammed'. I may add a color matched chin spoiler if I go nuts.

I guess you can see that's a pretty serious set of tires for an econo box. I think it's partly why it corners so well. Other reason is fully IRS and those german engineers just know their shit. Even if they fudge the on diesel emission data! (but I think that was the bosses, who are the same all over the world)

here's the dash. No nonsense, straightforward. But top quality soft touch materials. SQ of radio is fairly poor. Only beef. Heated seats, multiway adjust inc lumbar. Yes, they are cloth, which I actually prefer. Leather looks great, but hotter in summer, colder in winter and it eventually starts to crack. Easier to clean though. Cloth is grippy to when doing crazy cornering. Tilt and telescopic steering wheel. No, I don't have the cool flat bottom with radio control buttons. (anyone who lives in Louisville area will recognize radio is tuned to local NPR station,  :)

Oh and weather tech. laser cut floor pans. Pricey but worth it.

Not sure about the model you are asking about, but I do trust tirerack's ratings.

Personally, I have only used Pilot Super Sports on my M3, 335, and S4.

If I was looking to save a little, I would try the Conti Extremes.

Yeah, I really want the Michelen Pilots, but this A/S tires are holding up despite my lead foot. Do need to rotate when I put in the suspension. Front's take a beating.I could live with these tires. They're not bad at all. Suck in snow, but pretty grippy on dry or wet. But I can easily spin off line, even with auto trans. summer rubber might hook up quicker.

I'm gonna get the old T&C van running again for snow (just needs alternator, no biggie) Van not great in snow, but better than wagon. Plus if someone runs into it or I wreck.......I don't care. It's worth maybe $200.

Why not just put snows on it?

I definitely drove my 335 and S4 in the winter.

The M3 has snows on it, but I would only use it in an emergency.  I drive a 2001 A6 or 2007 Mini Cooper S during the winter months in the Northeast.

Congrats on your car and great thread with cool cars.

All the wagon photos made me find one of my '08 Saab Aero wagon.  I have two boys in car seats so the wagon won out over a van or SUV for me.  This has been a great car so far and it has the 2.8 v6 turbo which isn't efficient but it is pretty fun to drive around town.  For my next car I am looking to get a BMW wagon like BRM posted (beautiful) or more likely a 2010 535 wagon if I can track one down when the time comes.

zy, that's one of my all time favorites. But Audi gave up on wagons in U.S.. My salesman at ECS tuning has an A4 Avant. They're pretty beastly all around.

I looked. I went w/ the VW because I gotta a great deal on it. and as much as I love it, a car is just an appliance to me. Not a personal statement or anything else. Still this thing is a riot to drive. I'm sure the A4 even better with 2.0T & all wheel drive!

Steven, funny you mention Volvo. I really wanted a V50, but all them have a ton of miles on them now. The V60 is sweet, but a crap load of money. A new v60 polestar (Volvo's 'M' list at $60K) Heck any of the regular versions used with decent miles were in mid $30K range.

Yeah, those old 240 wagons would run forever. Huge cargo area, but car's still felt nimble. Dog slow though.

Oh on my car. I took off from a light in let's say a rather spirited fashion yesterday. A dude in a Grand Cherokee must have felt like his manhood was challenged so he go on it. I stayed even with his 4.0 until we got to corner where I dropped his ass like a hot rock.Wagons rule!

Steven, my first Izusu Trooper was like that, and it was 6 cyl. I had to drive through the 'mountains' on way from Louisville to shoot a job in VA. When it got hilly, I was in the truck lane down to 3rd gear w/ foot to floor maybe going 35? and it got crappy milage. I did sort of like that truck though, for it's basic simplicity. I managed to roll it over in the middle of a freeway during rush hour. Not a fun experience. No one got seriously hurt though.

Wow glad you're okay!  You mentioned your first choice was a Golf TDI, I had a 2013 and loved it.  I got about 43mpg on it regularly but sold it due to the price of diesel being so outrageous down here in TX at the time.  If I recall it was nearly a dollar above premium unleaded and even at the increased mileage per gallon I couldn't justify it.  The 40k maintenance is also quite expensive, same with the oil changes for it.  I'd buy another one in a heartbeat if I could afford it though.

My current dream car is a 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI, manual transmission with all the options and in carbon steel gray or night blue metallic.  I love love love the plaid seats and if they're anything like my TDI was they're super comfortable for long road trips.

I really always wanted a GTI. But I'm glad I went wagon, mostly because you just don't see many, not that GTI's are common. Mine not as quick, but soon will have same (if not better) suspension.  8)

I used to not care for grey cars, but that Carbon Grey GTI looks badass. And yes, I'm glad they kept the plaid, at least on the base models. Manual 6 shifter is quite good. ESC sells a short throw kit that's not expensive.

I suppose I could get an M, but I'm saving my money to remodel my photo studio. I plan on going nuts. Not going to be cheap. I want aluminum channel storefront type windows. Really pricey.

Maybe someday, I'll get an M2

Drive fast, but stay safe!

Wheels are from APEX.

In the winter I use EC-7's and in the summer ARC-8

DoubleJ. I've not seen a circa 2002 dash. But VW has really amped up quality since the Mk4 days. They got a really bad rep with those first Mexican models. I've had zero issues and hope none arise. I belong to a VW wagon owners forum. Biggest gripe these days (besides the diesel thing) is leaking sunroofs, which I don't have. And It seems like the hatch release button on driver's door tends to fail, but that's about it. Mine is buggy, but the release on key fob works fine.

Someone mentioned hydrolocking on the TDI. I've not read about that. Some people who install aftermarket cold air intakes that go down into front wheel well have had this issue.  I'm gonna run a CAI someday, but one I want pulls in air from grill, not way down low.

cheers mate.

I put one down low on my mustang and while it worked great with my after-market airbox and K&N filter it made a much better vacuum cleaner.
The intake scoop, lower left below, mounted underneath the air-dam,lots of cold air plus dirt and leaves.

I put up with for about 3 months and I was cleaning the K&N once a month which was total BS. :duh:
No way would I recommend a cold air intake box low on the front of the car.

Scotty, I guess jury is out on CAI in general. It's my opinion that any that claim 20 hp are lying. Maybe 8 at best? The VW airbag on the 2.5 is a bit crappy. It's more about noise suppression than efficiency. I'd like a little intake noise my self. I'm gonna do exhaust too. I've have a buddy from VW forum that showed me a mod that's way cheaper than full cat back and sounds good. Not like some fart can tuner car. Hate those. (2.5 has two mufflers, you simply remove the final one, sounds stupid, but it works)

The somewhat odd ball 5 cyl. has a cool sound once you unlock it. I hate loud cars, but I do like a bit of growl and snarl when getting on throttle!  :D
Title: Re: Finally got dream car (mostly)
Post by: *Scotty* on 29 Jul 2016, 01:22 am
Yeah 20 hp from a CAI or a set of mufflers is BS. Even on a 300HP motor I don't think you would get 10HP at the flywheel. Without chassis dyno measurements for these mods all you have is marketing. It take a big bump in HP and torque at the rear wheels to feel it in the seat of your pants.

I figure If I'm lucky w/ CAI, muffler delete and an ECM reflash . I might get 10 hp or so. Might be stupid to spend the money for such low return. Still, refresh, is  supposed to let motor spin up quicker. Can't go turbo mod. That's $2500. And motor not spec's for it, so who knows about long term?

Like I said earlier, I don't want to street race. I much more prefer bombing corners, but for the sheer joy of it.

Believe it or not, VW as manufacturer scored highest on JD Powers poll owners of favorite mid priced vehicles, despite diesel gate. Although no one model scored top spot. BMW got a lot of slots, along with Porche. I I remember correctly, GM took best subcompact (sonic), best HD pickup (sierra) best midsize pickup (colorado) and best full size SUV (suburban) Ford & Chrysler......none. Which is surprising.

Uhh, I really like the Colorado pickup. I considered it, but they are a ton of money, and there are zero used ones around. When I was considering getting serious about live sound production and getting a PA of my own, I would've needed something that could tow a trailer.

Or more... it's way too expensive. Diesel option is $4k so it's not cheap with a gas motor either. Still an awesome truck, but I wouldn't consider it. I'd rather have a Chevy 1500 with a gas V8.

I did build a dream truck many years ago, '74 3/4 ton Chevy with a supercharged 496 big block. Bucket seats, AC, nice stereo... Beat most everything on the street in a straight line and got a respectable 9 mpg. :)

Consider an vintage one (checking for rust) since they seem to last forever.  Saw several at a recent local/small car show that were really cheap (compared to new) and easier to maintain without all the current emissions junk.

I'm old school when it comes to pickups (new ones with A/C, leather, stereos, etc. disgust me).   :nono:

JLM - You can scoff at AC in Michigan perhaps but if you lived out here in desert circumstances, I suspect you would have a very different opinion. Also, down here the rust free vintage truck is much easier to find.

We just bought two new cars, as my wife's Subaru was 10+ years old and failing rapidly, and I wanted a car to replace my VW Diesel.  We bought a Honda Pilot and a Chevy Volt.  It takes weeks to learn the systems in these cars.  Yesterday, I pressed a "tune" icon on the screen, and it took me forever to figure out how to get out of that mode.

On the other hand, the Volt is a technological marvel.  The Volt can go about 53 miles on electric, then has a gas engine to go another bunch of miles. Due to my own stupidity, I did not charge the car one night (I put the charger on the car, but did not firmly seat it, so it wasn't properly connected).  The next day, I had to use the engine, and it transferred seamlessly to the engine. I couldn't even tell it turned on the engine.  Assuming I charge nightly, as my commute is only about 36-40 miles each day, I should be electric 90+ % of the time.  And because there's no true transmission in the car, when you push on the accelerator pedal (almost called it a "gas pedal"), you go.  There's no delay, no spool up, no engine revving, no switching gears, nothing.  You just have instantaneous results.  It's also unbelievably quiet.  You hear nothing.

Gotta love that desert for rust free. When I was into air cooled VW type1's a long time ago (the bug) I thought about having one shipped in from the west. All here in the wet/humid east are rust buckets.

Yep, gotta have air. I think you need air in a car anywhere because of greenhouse effect. One of things that led me away from interest in the air cooled VW. Well, that and they are literally death traps. My modern VW has 8 airbags. The old one well besides none offered zero protection in a crash. But it did look cool. Moderate lower stance. All white, decrhromed, turn signals in front bumper, EMPI style wheels, disc brake conversion (in front) one piece tinted windows, hurst shifter, and a big honking motor with tucked up dual muffler headers! But in retrospect. What a piece of crap.  BTW: it was matte white, w/ black wheels, which was sort of ahead of times in 80's. No one ran that look back then. Lot of people hated, but others loved. Used to get people walking up and wanting to buy.

Rambling again, sorry......

Thank you.  I think it looks a lot better than the old one, and they also made it a hatchback, which I think makes it more useful.  I happened to get mine during a 20% off sale on the 2016s, so I saved over $8,000.  I didn't have a lot of choice as to options, but that's the way it was.  Once I get more data (only had the car a week), I might post some info about the car and my likes/dislikes.

You know, a lot of you probably think I'm a little nuts to cite what is basically an econobox as a dream car. Well, let's put it this way. I used to hate to drive when I had SUV's and a minivan.

Now I look forward to it. No this car does not have pin you in the seat acceleration, but it corners great.....and I like that. It gets better than rated milage (if I can contain my 'enthusiastic driving) It has the cargo space to haul my photo gear, and it has some of the best front seats I've tried. The bonus is by today's standards it wan't that much money. It makes me smile every time I get in it.

So it meets my definition of dream car. Fun to drive, cheap to own, comfortable , I like the way it looks, but is the classic 'sleeper' as it's a wagon.

I am serious when I say I would not own a supercar even if I were rich. I would top out on the M3 or maybe a Boxter because they are high performance, but still sort of low profile. I think exotics,  while maybe a riot to drive, just make you look like a douche bag. Ya know......it's like hey.....look at me.

On the the other hand if I were super rich I'd have a G5, and get rated to fly it myself.  :o

If I had the money I'd have a dream fleet:

- Corvette Z06

- BMW M3, Audi RS4/5, or some other fast medium sized sedan/hatch

- Chevy Duramax Diesel 2500 pu

- Subie STI rally car
Title: Re: Finally got dream car (mostly)
Post by: drphoto on 7 Aug 2016, 05:46 am
Dave, +1 on your list, but as a VW fan I'd have to go with  Golf R over the Subie. Granted the Subie is a great car, but I just hate the low rent interior.

Plus, I don't like that Subaru dropped the option of having the hatch version. But hey, that's the US market speaking.

C7 'vette.....built here in KY. A true world class sports car that's relatively affordable. (And looks cool as hell) Look out Euro super car makers if the C8 is mid engine as rumored.

Well I've already stated opinion on M3, but obviously an Audi fan if I own a  VW.

One of my friends owns a Silverado with the Duramax diesel and it's pretty great. We could tow a 7000 lb trailer at 80mph and still get decent
milage and a pretty comfortable ride too.

I used to have one of these.
It never made it on the road. I traded an old Ford Ranger for it. My neighbor put a 460 Ford big block in the Ranger. I never fixed up the P1800. The underside was completely rusted. I ran across  a few of the wagon  varieties in Cali, and thought that they looked very cool!

When Ford owned Volvo I would daydream about sliding a Lincoln LS V-8 in my 1963 P-1800.

Close the thread...

Just close the thread.

It's bad enough on a thread talking about "dream cars" you guys are mainly talking about German station wagons; now you guys are talking about stupid electric cars.

The Volt is nothing but a Prius with different clothes on, and neither of them are nice to look at. In fact all cars look like each other. I though I saw a Golf the other day but it was Kia.

Again, close the thread. You guys have become old, senile, and apparently blind.

This is for those of you who maybe culturally deprived and unaware of the history of Volvo P1800.
If you think the Volvo P1800 has classic Italian lines reminiscent of cars designed in Turin, there is a reason for this. The car that was driven by the Saint in the classic TV series starring Roger Moore was designed by Pelle Petterson while he was a student of Pietro Frua. Obviously, you can see Pietro's guiding hand in the execution of the car. Pietro Frua was one of the leading Italian coachbuilders designers during the 1950s and 1960s.

I wish mine could have been salvaged. Minew still had the two piece front bumper. I think that looked better than the later models. More AC cobra-like. It still had the 65 HP engine, though. I ran the codes on mine, and apparently it had a very rarely chosen interior color. I think it was originally red with a white carpet and interior. It's been too long to remember exactly . The P-1800 was very sweet looking in my opinion, especially for its time.
