Introduction Arthur Power
« on: 14 Oct 2024, 12:18 pm »
Greetings, I have been into electronics and audio gear since I was a kid. I am now the owner of Power Holdings Inc, a distributor and dealer of high end audio equipment.

Tyler Acoustics is currently building me a pair of speakers. Ty told me Danny has been designing his crossovers for the last few years. I am looking for a few suggestions and have some questions. I am hoping the fine folks on this forum might be able to help.  :)

Yep, I have done some design work for Ty.

Welcome to AC.

Nice to meet you Danny. Ty offered to build me a pair of D10x the largest speaker he has ever made. He doesn't build these large models anymore as he says it's getting to difficult as he gets older. I didn't ask but he knew I really wanted a pair and was nice enough to offer. His standard drivers are:

- SEAS Excel T25CF-001 (E0006) Tweeter
- Dayton Audio RS180-8 7" Reference Mid
- Dayton Audio RS270-8 10" Reference Woofer

These are no doubt excellent drivers for the money but I wanted to go all out. So I have chosen:

- SEAS Excel T25CF-002 (E0011) Millennium Tweeter
- SEAS Excel W18EX-003 (E0074) 7" Graphene Cone Woofer
- SB Acoustics Satori WO24P-8 9.5" Egyptian Papyrus Cone Woofer

Ty has used the Excel Millennium Tweeter and Excel Magnesium woofers before in this design just not the new Graphene version. Seems the only difference is the coating to prevent the Magnesium from corroding (which some have experienced). For the woofers I wanted to go in a different direction with the Satori WO24P. He has never used this model before in any of his speakers. This driver is also available with the TPCD cone (WO24TX). The only difference I could see it's a bit flatter/smoother in the upper mids. Since his crossover point is 150Hz it didn't seem of any benefit or worth the extra money.

I don't know much about what his crossover consists of. I know the crossover points are 150Hz and 2000Hz. Danny did you have any part of the design for this model?

Thank you, Arthur

I did not design the crossovers for that model.

That one was likely designed using a LEAP based simulation. So there is no telling what the actual response on that one looks like.

Also, anytime drivers are switched out in a design it will require a new crossover design.

Another thing to keep in mind is that we have better sounding drivers than those that we use in our own designs. So you might want to consider some of them.

Danny thanks for your response. The crossover Ty has for the Seas drivers is different then the one he uses for the Dayton drivers, that much I know. So I think the mids and highs should be ok. The Graphene version of the Seas Excel looks the same on paper it just has the coating on the Magnesium cone instead of paint. Not sure if that has any effect on the sound. The SB Acoustics Satori woofers might change things in the low end. I'll have to ask him for a diagram of the crossover to see what it consists of.

You have some nice speakers that get fantastic reviews. So I am sure your drivers are excellent. I really do not want to make any further changes though at this point. The SB woofers have already been received. I am not sure if he got the Seas drivers yet.

Just keep in mind that swapping out any of those drivers will require a crossover redesign.
