Considering building a pair, but a few questions
« on: 8 Dec 2024, 10:16 pm »
Haven't posted on the GR Research forum in a long while… if ever. Considering building a pair of Danny's speakers to eventually replace an approximately 25 year old set of Genesis 6.1's. Nothing wrong with them at the moment but they are old and do have quite a bit of electronics associated with them. Long since discontinued and to the best of my knowledge replacement/repair parts no longer available.

The NX Oticas appeal to me the most though more than I want to spend initially especially not having ever heard of any GR Research speakers. I'm impressed by the near cult following of them to say the least, and enjoy viewing many of Danny's videos which are educational and instructive. On with the questions.

1. For those of you who seem to build a lot of these kits, what do you do with them all? Store while not in use? Sell on the secondary market then on to the next model? I am fascinated that so many people seem to build lots of speaker kits, just curious.

2. My Genesis speakers are large heavy floor standing speakers with built in servo subs and play full range and then some. I have doubts the NX Monitors would be able to duplicate that sort of sound quality. The Genesis have circular ribbon tweeters front and rear, Titanium mid, (2) 6 inch aluminum mid woofers in a sort of quasi MTM configuration.

Looking forward to any insight on those of you who might have built a set of each or any of these. Thanks in advance.

Routlaw,
I have built a few of Danny’s speakers, they are exceptional in my opinion. I think the people would like to know a few things if you don’t mind.
1. Room dimensions
2. Room treatment

Question 1- I have kept everything I have built so far, but plan on selling when I upgrade going forward.

Question 2- I have the NX Studios on double trouble subs. As far as sound quality goes I believe it would be hard to beat for the space I have. My room is approx 17x20 and no issues at all. If it was a larger room I would build the NX Oticas or Extreme’s (they have the same DNA but more punch In midrange and mid bass.

If you’re located close to another member might be worth a listen.

Thanks for your comments. My room is just shy of 300 sq ft @ 13x22 ± a tad, so not as large as yours but even with my rather large Genesis it's never been an issue and I do have multiple subs. My room is treated though there is probably some work I could still do to it and probably will. To the best of my knowledge no one up here in Big Sky Country has built any of Dannys speakers but could be wrong of course.

Sounds like you have a great set up. Thanks again.

13x22 may be on the small side for the NX-Oticas unless you decide to forgo the OB subs, or can leave enough space behind the NX-Oticas for the subs.

I started out by building the NX-Oticas and a pair of triple-subs. I've been an audiophile for about 50 years now, and have owned more than a dozen speakers - many priced considerably more than the NX-Oticas with subs, but I have to say the NX-Oticas with subs delivered overall better performance than any of the commercial speakers I previously owned. When I had the opportunity to build the Line Forces, I passed the NX-Oticas on to my son and sold the subs to someone in CA who was very happy to get them. I replaced the triple subs with a pair of quad subs. The cabinets for the Line Forces and subs were built by captainhemo. I didn't really need the extra drivers, but wanted cabinets finished to match my Line Forces.

I also built a pair of NX-Studios (cabinets built for me by Mike Lundy) which I use in my bedroom system.

I just recently finished building a pair of Bullies with my daughter. She is using them in her apartment.

Thanks for the input. Line Forces, you got me don't know or haven't heard anything about those but it sounds like a winner. Sounds like you have some in depth building experience with these then. Some 25 or 30 years I built a DIY speaker which was pretty good. Sort of have an itch again. Great info and thanks again.

I own the Line Forces, as well as the NX-Oticas in a 2nd system.  I recently built out the previous version of the NX-Bravo and the NX-Bravo what I would recommend if you want to dip your toe in the waters to see what the GR Research house sound is like.

The NX-Oticas are big speakers.  Pictures don't really do justice to how large they are.  If you're in a small space, you might do better with the NX-Studios and using a pair of double trouble subs as stands.

The Line Forces are not available as a standard kit, primarily because the BG NEO10 drivers are no longer available. It's possible to find the drivers occasionally on the used market, but it will probably take a while to buy enough (12 for the pair). Although you can buy the 32 NEO3 drivers from Danny. They need a pretty large room as well (mine is 17' x 29'). Here's what mine look like.

Danny's speakers deliver a lot of value for the money. Good quality drivers, very well designed and solid cabinets that are straightforward to build (assuming you buy the flat-packs), and crossovers that deliver a smooth and neutral response. Even the basic crossover parts are better than you'll find in most commercial speakers at anything close to the price, and the upgraded crossovers take them to the next level. Since you are building them yourself, you can easily experiment with even fancier parts.

My TV space has 13 speakers which is mostly Bully and and XL-S Encore. My music listening space is the Oticas and Double Trouble. I stream roon music to both spaces and I cannot choose a favorite. I really like them both.

Impressive setup. Thanks for sharing the info and photos. I certainly do get that the GR speakers bring a lot of value to the table too. Lots to cogitate and chew on.

Definitely a consideration thanks for the suggestion. I will add however my Genesis 6.1's are quite large too and have never been an issue in the current space. I should post a photo of the 6.1's as a reference.

Interesting take on things. Sounds like a great batch of systems you have.

I built a pair of oticas and double trouble subs for a room that is essentially the same size as your room.  I had concerns but they sound fantastic in the room.  It is heavily treated with diffusion panels and some absorption as well.

Or another option would be the X statik's.

I have a pair of NX-Studios with an SVS subwoofer and surround speakers.  My room is 13'x21' and is my family room, complete with lounge chairs, couch, 75" TV, baby grand piano, computer workstation (I work from home), etc.  My point being, if it was a dedicated space for listening I think that would be big and maybe bigger speakers would work.  As it is, the NX Studios work great and don't overwhelm the somewhat busy room.  I'd love to hear the NX- big brothers but I'm quite content with what I have.

The NX Studios are the only pair I've ever built and they replaced a pair of B&W 805's, that I'm using for surrounds now.
