12AX7 recommendations for a Fisher KX-200

Hi all,

Glad to be back after 30 days in "le chateau de bow wow"

Was looking for recommendations from the group on what 12AX7's work best for the Fisher KX-200.  I was forutunate to pick up a cherry unit (a 9 of 10 cosmetically, complete with original wood cabinet).   I changed out all the caps and output resistors (just to be safe).

The unit has original Telefunken 12AX7's, which are wonderful.  However, would like to try some tube rolling with the unit, so wanted to see what people's experience is with 12AX7's.

So far, I've only tried NOS Tung Sol's with D getters, and they are pretty darn nice also.  It seems the V3/V4 tone tubes make some difference in soundstage when listening to the line stage as well.

These old Scott/Fisher units restored are simply wonderful sounding, and well worth seeking out.

my favorite 12ax7's are the amperex bugle boy long plate d getters from the heerlan holland plant.  for some reason, they do everything so well and they have proven to be my favorite even in different components.  give them a try, they are not easy to find but ebay will have them from time to time and make sure they are the ones as stated above.  you can also use 5751 in place of the 12ax7 which are the same sonically but have i think about 30% less gain, so they are not as "loud".  but in reality you really only need a few clicks on the volume control for them to be as loud as a 12ax7.  in this case, i found the sylvania jhs gold label 5751 to be the best in the family.  their midrange is imply to die for and other sylvania gold labels simply don't sound as good then with the 5751.

Been wanting to try Amperex 12AX7's.  Also want to try RCA Black plate 12AX7's as well.

Brimar 12ax7's are very nice. Pricey, but very nice.
