I took a bad spill and rekt my right shoulder a while ago.  Had surgery, just starting PT.  My right arm is useless, imobilized in a special sling.  You dom't notice how right-handed you are til you only have your left! :duh:  At any rate it's hard to type this way so bear with me.

Sorry to read that.  I'm facing open heart surgery next month (at Cleveland Clinic).

My SIL just had a valve replacement and a bypass done there about 2 weeks ago and is coming along fine. Since the need for the bypass had been unexpected, and might not have been found by other doctors, they're singing the praises of the CC doctors and staff loudly. I think you'll be in very good hands.

Best wishes for a complete and speedy recovery to both you and Rob.

So Rob, will you be switching to left handed knives?
Hope your recovery goes smoothly.

I can't use a knife at all! :duh:   My left hand is really only useful for keeping my watch from sliding off!

PT went well today!  I see the surgeon again next week; with some luck I might get out of the brace soon! :hyper:  :weights: :jester:

Rob,

Great news. Keep up your chin, you'll get through it.  8) BTW those ortho guys know all there is to know about the mechanics and physiology of the shoulder. I am sure the success rate is high for those willing to do the PT.

Well, I've been out of the brace for a few weeks now!  The surgeons tell me it's a "life changing injury" and I can't rush it, so they won't release me to work til around the end of August.  I'm doing PT and am not cleared to lift up to 5 lbs.  And I can use a mouse again and type so I'll be hopefully able to post a bit more!

"Life changing" and injury are usually a bad combination.  Is this the ripped up rotator cuff?  Shoulder injuries come in such a wide range of problems.  I really hope this recovery goes well.
Without knowing details, all I can say is do your rehab diligently.

Funny thing is I first went to urgent care and they referred me to an ortho clinic.  The whole time I was thinking, "Please don't be the rotator cuff!"  Then after seeing the ortho specialist I really wished it was just a rotator cuff! :duh:  I slipped on the ice at work and landed perfectly on the tip of my shoulder.  The impact dislocated the arm out of the back of the socket; in the process it broke about 30% of the ball off and chipped out 30% of the socket! :o  Unbeknownst to me there was a little bit of arthritis in the shoulder so a small amount of bone loss to begin with.  At any rate, if was right on the line to where they do a scope or replace the shoulder joint.  They opted for the scope because at 52 I'm a bit "young" to do a replacement.  If it wears out in my lifetime there isn't a good option.  Plus if they do the scope and it doesn't fix it they can still do the replacement later.

If this hadn't been at work it would have sucked much more!  It's probably cost the insurance company $100k at least. I'm going to one of the best PT clinics in the northwest and the ortho clinic is also top shelf.

My PT is going very well and both therapist and surgeon are pleased.  So while I'm not "out of the woods" completely there's a good chance that once PT is done I'll be more or less back to normal.  Maybe a few limitations (eg he mentioned I might want to avoid using an axe & splitting wood) but if I can do most of the stuff I used to it would be a win. :thumb:
