Title: Favorite live albums with superior SQ
Post by: K.F. on 26 May 2015, 06:20 pm
Here are 5 live albums, and to get off the beaten path of albums we all know only too well, I put these 3 albums from the small but highly acclaimed Sound Liaison label on top, but also because I really do think they are superior in sound quality, even when compared to ECM's Keith Jarrett.
Bobby Timmons ''in Person'' is an old favorite with a prominent Ron Carter right in the middle of the sound stage, and no I don't think that my LP's sounds better than these hi-res downloads. I wish they did but ....that is life. On the plus side I would probably not have discovered these wonderful ''young'' musicians if I had been stuck with only listening to my vast collection of L.P's

I'm playing this right now.  Rockabilly Jazz?  Anyway, my 24 yr. old Magnepan SMGAs are doing some good things out of the ordinary.

This has become a personal favorite of mine;(http://1652654879.rsc.cdn77.org/images/tony-bert-300v1.jpg)
http://www.soundliaison.com/ (http://www.soundliaison.com/)
Quote
The room was filled to the brim with audio enthusiasts, the closest listener being just a few feet from the musicians and the microphones.
When the audience is so close to the musicians, a synergy occurs. The audience becomes part of the music making and help spur the musicians on to great heights.
The musicians feeling the empathy from the audience dare to take chances that one rarely hears in a studio recording.
Tony and Bert had not performed together as a duo before, and no rehearsal had taken place prior to the Rhapsody concert, but the music these two masters of improvisation created that sunny afternoon in Rhapsody, is simply breathtaking.

The recording conditions were not ideal. The doors in the back of the room were opened several times by people trying to squeeze in, making the sound from the espresso machine in the hall and the DJ playing ambient music in the garden faintly audible at the beginning of each set. Later halfway through the concert the windows of the room had to be opened for air. The DJ turned off his music but he was immediately replaced by the sound of birds singing.
If listening closely one can hear them, chime in, in the quiet parts.

These outside factors contributed to the unique atmosphere of this recording and that is yet another reason why; Impromptu (a musical composition prompted by the spirit of the moment) is such an apt title.

Here is a great sounding Mono recording;(http://a2.mzstatic.com/us/r30/Music/v4/5b/13/1e/5b131ede-30b9-0beb-81dd-5c73699ec483/cover170x170.jpeg)

Norman Granz was on hand to record music from Cannonball Adderley's first European tour in 1960, but he and the Adderley estate have been parsimonious in dealing out the goods. It took 24 years for Part One, What Is This Thing Called Soul to emerge, and another 13 years passed before this follow-up album came out. But better late than never, as they say, and the reward is hearing Cannonball's alto in full ecstatic flight, lots of fighting work from brother Nat on cornet and the prized rhythm section of Victor Feldman (piano), Sam Jones (bass) and Louis Hayes (drums) in a state of complete rapport. Only "The Chant" is duplicated from the earlier album, and Cannonball's solo is a model of Parker-derived hard bop laced with his own highly rhythmic personality. Other than an overlong drum solo on "Bohemia After Dark," this is a most enjoyable slice of what, alas, is now history. ~ Richard S. Ginell, Rovi

PA,
Do you (or does anyone else) know where I can download a high res file of this album?  I found one site that claimed to have it, but when I started to download my computer started making noise and I got a big warning from my provider that it was a malicious site.  The other sites only seem to have MP3?

Thanks!

I have the DVD.
Do not risk downloading from sites that are not trustworthy. This is big label recording so if it is not on HD tracks or qubus or comparable ''big'' download sites it is not available as hi res.

It is a very impressive album indeed.
From the first note of the opening track you just know that this is going to be a great listening experience. A true audiophile recording but also just a great album in it's own right.
High point for me is God Bless the Child with that fabulous bass introduction.

The new Grateful Dead "Get Shown The Light" 24-192 download is impressive on many levels, and it was originally recorded direct to 2-track (no thought of commercial release), albeit on a Nagra IV-S with an outboard dbx unit.

This CD is a very special album, even a historic album it simple is the Playboy Jazz-001 catalogue number released in 2001, recorded in DSD-64 by Corcord Music.

It show great jazz ballads music composed by Patrick Williams(Sinatra maestro) for the CBS mini-serie Blonde in homage to Marilyn Monroe, too bad its not a SACD.

The solo and orchestra musicians are a gang of stars like:
Wayne Bergeron
Chuck Berghofer
Ray Brown
Larry Bunker
John Burk
Kenny Burrell
Lee Callett
Darius Campo
Joel Derouin
Assa Drori
Gregg Field
Dorothy Fields
Kristin Fife
Endre Granat
Arthur Hamilton
Scott Hamilton
Roy Hargrove
Terry Harrington
Dan Higgins
Plas Johnson
Bert Kalmar
Michael Lang

Title: Re: Favorite live albums with superior SQ
Post by: dB Cooper on 15 Mar 2018, 05:14 am

1. Batik; the old Man and the Sea. (http://www.soundliaison.com/images/BatikHoes300shad.png)http://www.soundliaison.com/ (http://www.soundliaison.com/)

2. Paul Berner; Road to Memphis. (http://www.soundliaison.com/images/PaulBandMilan300.png)http://www.soundliaison.com/ (http://www.soundliaison.com/)

3. Carmen Gomes Inc.; Thousand Shades of Blue

(http://www.soundliaison.com/images/SSS1Milan300.png) http://www.soundliaison.com/ (http://www.soundliaison.com/)

4. Keith Jarrett; Somewhere http://www.hdtracks.com/somewhere-live-in-lucerne-2009 (http://www.hdtracks.com/somewhere-live-in-lucerne-2009)

5. Bobby Timmons Trio ( LP)

I noted that these albums were labeled 'Studio Showcase Series' so I checked out the website. The Batik album (at least; I didn't check the others) was done "in the studio with a small select audience." I don't know if the fact that there was an audience present in the studio makes it a "live" recording in the sense most people use that term. It no doubt changed the dynamic in the studio, having people there listening, but I think of 'live' as 'in a public venue'. Even with a 'small audience' present, the producers had a lot more control over the acoustics and conditions in general than they would have had in any public venue. The SQ in the samples I heard was quite good though. I'm not criticizing the approach; i think it's valid; just noting the difference between a studio and any club, even a small intimate one like Annapolis MD's 49 West (the image is from Rhythm Future Quartet's 'Live at 49 West' and itself is a very good live recording. The venue is small enough to support 100% acoustic performance.)

This picture, taken from the liner notes of the ''Sings the Blues'' download,  looks to me as a concert held in a studio. It is not a club with people talking and glass breaking :D but in a good sounding studio. I guess that's why those recordings sound so good. Seems to me they are trying to get the best of both worlds and succeeding.
quote is from the liner notes;https://www.soundliaison.com/studio-showcase-series/276-carmen-gomes-sings-the-blues (https://www.soundliaison.com/studio-showcase-series/276-carmen-gomes-sings-the-blues)
Quote
When an audience is present, a synergy occurs. The audience becomes part of the music making and help spur the musicians on to greater heights. And it was a great audience that afternoon, all ears and smiles, the whole band truly enjoyed playing for them.
As they are not ''separated'' by the headphones, the musicians, in order to hear each other are forced to create a natural and musical balance, a balance which is then easily captured by the main stereo pair of microphones. Because of this natural and musical balance the need for compression to control levels is no longer necessary, and since everybody is in the same room, the boxed sound which is so common in many modern recordings is absent.

This all sounds very straight forward but for this approach to work, certain criteria has to be fulfilled;
The studio has to have a good sound.
The musicians have to be very good and well prepared as it is very difficult to repair mistakes because of the ''cross talk'' between the instruments.
We have to be very precise placing the microphones and the musicians at the right distance to the main stereo microphones and the right distance to each other.
And with a live audience in the studio, we pray that they remember to turn off their cell phones and that the ones with a bad cold choose to stay at home.

Wow great performance, I have this CD below that is not so great in general music enjoyment:

To double the club ambience they mount a pub in a studio and put a mike for the audience, the result was tiresome as the audience was clearly a claque, on the second track the trained audience become apparent.

I’ve been streaming this via Roon/Tidal and it’s pretty good sonically as well as musically.
Bill Laurance from Snarky Puppy fame along with other members (Michael League) get a good groove going.

I hope you enjoy it as I’ve been  :thumb:

But I do like the album :D

Quote
Mercy, Mercy, Mercy! Live at "The Club"
Mercymercymercy.jpg
Live album by Cannonball Adderley

Mercy, Mercy, Mercy! Live at "The Club" is a 1966 album by jazz musician Julian "Cannonball" Adderley.[1] It received the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance – Group or Soloist with Group in 1967.[2] Though the original liner notes state that it was recorded at the Club DeLisa in Chicago, it was actually recorded at Capitol's Hollywood studio with an invited audience and an open bar.[3] The reason for this discrepancy, according to the liner notes in the CD reissue, is that Adderley and the new manager of Club DeLisa (which had been renamed "The Club", after operating for years in Chicago under its old name) were friends, and Adderley offered to give the club a bit of free publicity.

The guitar player from the Carmen Gomes album has made great funky interpretation of Les McCann's and Eddie Harris most famous songs. Highly recommended, it's available as an excellent 180gr vinyl album with a superb pressing: https://tettero.bandcamp.com/album/tettero-plays-eddie-harris-les-mccann (https://tettero.bandcamp.com/album/tettero-plays-eddie-harris-les-mccann)

or in DXD at https://www.soundliaison.com/ (https://www.soundliaison.com/) I have both the Vinyl and the DXD Flac download.

They sound different but are both superb masters.

The new'' One Mic '' recording series from S.L. is truly spectacular.
The Feenbrothers recording is especially outstanding. That one microphone can do this is unbelievable. Only problem is that everything else sounds a bit unnatural after this recording.

Review about One Mic Recording by Joe Whip at Audiophile Style.

.....These guys and this recording just rocks. Pace, rhythm, tone and soundstage are just off the charts.
The precise placement of all four of the musicians perfectly matches the photos of the sessions.
The balance of all four instruments is darn near perfect. As you can no doubt tell, I am a huge fan of this recording.
It is one of the best in terms of recording quality I have ever heard. Of course, and as always,
your view of the actual music content may vary quite considerably from mine.
Nonetheless, I think we would all agree that this recording sounds sensational....

I agree.

Allman Brothers Band Live at Fillmore East [SHM-SACD]
https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/UIGY-9029
Remastered for SACD release Universal Music UIGY-9029

https://www.sa-cd.net/showtitle/6494
This is a great sound single layer, green label, Stereo SHM-SACD for a analogue recording from 1971, recorded live at Fillmore West, the disc package is a four folder hi quality paper assembly, the disc envelope was firm hold inside a space tray, very dificult to pullout, and after out, the disc envelope do not enter anymore in this case.
The 2010 liner notes are three pages long, but only in japanese(very useful!!).
The live acoustics appear very detailed in this SACD and show a beautiful sound atmosphere, seems there is no compression on this disc, or if there is too little, as I did not feel uncomfortable hearing, there is no tape hiss audible too, great job on the DSD mastereing!! Of course the performance is a great moment in the Flower Power generation, goods times those.

Barcode 4988005614414 time is 78:44 a generous time as Dire Straits new SACD are only 41minutes, and cost the same hi price. For this premium price is lacking more new photos or even some bonus tracks, as a Stereo SACD like this can store 255/260 minutes of music, the photos and disc package follow the original double vinyl set.
Great release, very recommended(this is a limited edition release and will no see the day light again).
Tracks:
1.STATESBORO BLUES
2.DONE SOMEBODY WRONG
3.STORMY MONDAY
4.YOU DON'T LOVE ME
5.HOT 'LANTA
6.IN MEMORY OF ELIZABETH REED
7.WHIPPING POST
