Hiya Guys,
I realize this is an AUDIO site and this post may be sacrilege but I just realized that those of us that do the Home Theatre thing too didn't have a "What are you WATCHING now thread".
The first post is going to be a bit mundane but believe it or not I've never sat down and watched this movie from front to back uninterrupted. I've seen bits and pieces of all of it but never all together. So I saw it pop up on HBO-HD the other night and I scheduled it to be recorded on my HR-20-700.

Soooo, are you planning on three more channels from Bill?
Not exactly...
The front three channels will be the new Salk Song Towers and they will be powered by the very beefy ATI 1506 six channel amp. I will be bridging two channels to produce 450 watts for each speaker. This amp is huge (almost 90 lbs) and I think it will do a very good job for HT duties.

Scott, I remembered watched this one a while back.It is really a Hollywood remake version of the French film called "Le Femme Nikita" from '89 or '90 I think.

Hey!
I'm watching Brit's "Coupling" on BBC America channel. :D Pretty old show now but it is kindna like Brit's version of US's "Friends" but with all the Brit sense of humors, naughtier, more creative and etc. Love this show but I have to admit sometime I don't understand or get their joke.

Hey what channel is that on?
-
Well I was watching the highlights of “A Few Good Men” (1992) this afternoon at high sound pressure levels thou it really wasn’t as high as one might think.
“But you have to ask me nicely.”
Col. Nathan R. Jessep "A Few Good Men" (1992)
The stunning clarity and brut force of the dialogue mix on this film was crystal clear if not a little too realistic at times in terms of loudness and depth that was partly felt. Thou this is an old film by now some 15 years, (1992) it still holds up very well on region 2 DVD.
With peaks reaching close to around 90dbc during the last few moments of the court trial case where “Col. Nathan R. Jessep” played brilliantly by (Jack Nicholson) explodes in a rage of fury at “Lt. Daniel Kaffee” played by (Tom Cruise) where you could even hear a pin drop when everything drops to utter silence in the court room.
I also gave the laserdisc a spin after the gripping conclusion between (Nicholson and Cruise) the sound pressures seamed almost transparent except the laserdisc has the edge on the audio PCM and thou the clarity in image is slightly weaker it was still very entertaining.

Night before last in the wee hours on cable I saw a little crime drama with Marlon Brando and Richard Boone called The Night And The Following Day. It was a bad movie but facsinating all the same time. I like off the wall crime dramas. How about a tongue in cheek little diddy with Alec Baldwin and my main man Andre Braugher called Thick As Thieves? Ya'll should get a kick out of this cause Baldwin's character is a record collector and a jazz aficionado (as you and I both may be).

Very recently, True Believer starring James Woods and Robert Downey, Jr. on cable. I had forgotten that I enjoyed this the first time I saw it- it's an intense crime drama/unraveling of a . . I shouldn't give it away in case somebody hasn't seen it. It's good. But, what really grabbed me on this viewing was the music. It had a somber theme running through it like Cop Land or Mulholland Falls. Very effective.

Nothing......hehehe....hehehehe........
-
Call me jaded but I didn't think Eastern Promises was hittin on jacks***. Just when it got interesting, it went flat. Maybe I was expecting too much. Stylistically- I was expecting more- it was fine. But just to compare, I whipped out Collateral by Micheal Mann. This movie has a dumb premise but it is a beautiful thing to watch. Color saturation and definition are top shelf. Speaking of MM, a nice touch he used in Miami Vice (dismal) was when the FBI informants were shot in the beginning, rather than having the bullets penetrating the windshield and the little blood things exploding in the actors' shirts, the camera was in the back seat where the seat backs were being blown out by thru and thrus. The terror was more effective on me than the former would have been. I admire directors that leave something to the imagination. Going back to the director of EP, somebody needs to tell me why critics think the director, David Croneberg, is so cool. Last year's History of Violence was more of the same, an old story with new wrappings and Crash (before the studios became interested in this cat) was a movie for the hipper than thou and, sure nuff, became a cult hit. Predictable, in my opinion. For drama, The Coen Bros are in a class by themselves. Pardon the rant.

Just finished Lonely Hearts that was a good but messed up show.
Saw Bourne Ultimatum couple days ago and agree it was very good. I didn't expect it from a triquel.
Saw Hot Rod last night, thought it was be at least stupid humor funny....not even that. It was painful to watch it was so dumb and didn't it come close to humor of any sort. I don't think a 13 year old boy would think it was funny.

Cable (in the background). "The Hot Spot". John Lee and Miles collaborating in the background music. Probably an overdub but those cats could make great music anyway. Dude driving a '57 Golden Hawk. Trippin me out.

I just finished up a dvd rental, one of the most sh*tiest endings I've ever sat thru even tho the movie itself was pretty good. The movie was "No Country For Old Men" with a star studded cast that included Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Woody Harrelson. The movie had everything, everything but an ending that I could feel good about. It simply left me empty inside,,,, sorta what life can do to ya sometimes but you hate to get served up with a plateful of that on the big screen. There's just no justice in this world but blind justice and that's what you're left with.

I rent DVD's if I can't find them in the library. I just finished watching "Kingdom of Heaven", which I enjoyed very much. Last weekend I watched "The World's Fastest Indian", at least I think that's the title , and "The Prestige" with David Bowie playing Nikola Tesla. Both were very good and if you haven't seen them it might be worth your while to watch. One of my alltime favorites is "The Name of the Rose" based on the book by Umberto Eco (the book is also extremely good!).

Just watched "Good Morning, Vietnam" on cable. What a hoot, still. And probably true in many respects to being there. Robin williams is funny to the bone as is much of the supporting cast and surprisingly for some of the actors usually seen in more serious fare.

It was quite good... Or my expectations were to low? :D Anyway, its a lot of better than Clash of the Titans was. (the gold gear of the Gods were maybe a bit too shiny and gold but in these type of films is quite normal :))

Fast Five! Caught this on cable this morning. Damn, this has some good things going for it! I normally avoid action flicks which this is, but I may have never seen one this good. Perfect casting, clever and funny dialog, and action scenes like I've never seen. Not just for their action, but for the editing. The chase scene in the hillside barrio of Rio early on in the movie is edge of your seat intense and flawless. State of the art from what I've seen. Plus, it's filmed in Rio which is never hard on the eyes to me. This flick, the look of it, the screenplay, and it's actors and the editing are all top shelf. This is a hell af a piece of film making in spite of it's subject. Plus, the caper at the end may be the most outrageous and explosive thing on film. Expensive, too, I'd venture. Five stars.

I just finished watching the 1939 version of Goodbye Mr. Chips. It is sort of like a 1930's version of Mr. Holland's Opus.

Law and Order SVU on TV and something occurred to me. Ice T cannot act a minute so what the hey is he doing in this series? I figure when they were casting they were thinking, well, he has a large audience a lot of whom will watch. If black actor Andre Braugher were the actor selected it sure would be a better show. He may very well have stolen it! I suppose that could be a reason or maybe he had other commitments. Speaking of Andre Braugher, anybody know what he's doing these days?
I saw Australian production "The Hard Word" recently with Guy Pearce in the lead and it is very good. Like to see more from down under myself.

The movie critics gave it a low score though. Probably is just special affects and poor acting?

I only saw the preview and it looked like it could be good. I'm guessing that the special affects were the strong point. The reviews say that part is great, but the story and parts of the plot are stupid/implausible. I saw one review that said it was a satire and everybody didn't get it. (there's a link on the Battleship thread.) I figure it's a failure in that respect, any way you look at it. If it was a satire and nobody got it, it was a failure as a satire. This is my surmise, not having seen the movie.

Road to Perdition is not much of an original story but director Sam Mendez makes it interesting to watch. He uses color nicely (i.e. sepia tones in this case) and is very original in some of his camera work. Nice music, too. He's the guy who directed (wrote, too, I think) American Beauty which won several Oscars a few years back.
Enigma is centered around WWII but is not about the fighting, It is about about the code breaking machine. The story has intrigue and the writing is very good, imo. Saffron Burrows is sure easy on the eyes. It's a good one. Think I may even buy it. Saw it about a week ago for the 3rd time. Recommend it, yessir.

Oh that's some snooty stuff.
Sunrise is a personal fave and I don't understand how it is not as revered as Citizen Kane or at least close.
Potemkin. Sharp angled commie mess. The shot in the eye IS pretty sweet though. Seen one Eisenstein, seen 'em all.
French movie about a chick and a donkey. Pass.
Singin' In the Rain. Fun.
Hm, never heard of this Dreyer. I am a fan of his Joan of Ark. Pissed the Blu Ray is international only.
Rublev aka 4 hours of my life I will never get back. Stalker and Nostalghia made up for it. Barely.
Don't think I've seen The General. Will have to check it out.
I was too young to appreciate Satyajit Ray in school, maybe it's time I revisit. Hope there's a blu ray.
Godard. Whatever.

Just ordered Street Smart for $5, Morgan Freeman's first movie, I believe. He plays "Fast Black". Anybody remember this?
This morning while dressing the movie TROY was playing on the tube (I think that is the name of it). Check this Academy Award worthy scene out. Hector and Agamemnon (the leader of the Greeks-pardon the spelling) are facing off before a battle in the opening sequence. They agree that the best warrior from each side should settle the dispute. Hector calls for his guy, a giant of a man and mean looking as hell, and Ag calls out for Achilles, but he isn't there. Huh? Pretty big day, ole bean, wouldn't ya think? He's back in his tent asleep with a beautiful girl. Right, uh-huh, sure thing. 10,000 Greeks are putting on their armor and mounting up all around his tent and he sleeps thru it? Maybe they were being very quiet like tip-toeing around it or something. Anybody associated with this movie should bury their head in the sand. One of my top ten all time stinkers. So bad it's funny.

Watched the remake of Red Dawn tonight. When I saw the 1.5 stars I thought, oops didI just waste my money. I actually found it enjoyable. I liked how they took different things from the original and changed it up a little. My only real complaint was it was a little short but other than that it's a keeper. The pic below is a funny take on the poster. :green:

Zero Dark Thirty is out DVD now. Rented from RedBox. Excellent flick. I posted an opinion earlier about the movie Side Effects. Saw in Entertainment Weekly that the movie has grossed only 9M. That translates to a small audience at theaters so I can't imagine the DVD audience will be any better. A pity. It deserves viewing. It's a wicked mystery.

On 'This' network. If you like Hitchcock, do not miss this homage by the Coens. Their Best imho.

That's a good one alright. Anybody can see from it that the Coen Bros are brilliant and look at all their flicks that followed. I believe this was their first.

The Monterey Pop DVD. Everybody oughta see this at least once for Janis Joplin alone. She is mesmerizing on this stage. VERY committed and intense. Whew!.

You know, the thing about great movies is that they past the time test. In other words, they get better with more viewings. More about the machinations fade away and the rhythm takes over. But, that's only if it's a great flick. You begin to see how the settings work together and the timing of lines becomes musical. But, that's only if it's a great flick. Office Space is a great flick. Dunno, but you might not wanna smoke anything illegal watching this. Might be that you're laughing so hard you'll forget to breathe. Heard the expression "note perfect"? It's more than that even, it's transcendental. Everything is workin here. And you shouldn't miss the sly music.

Just watched The 2013 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on the telly. Really enjoyed this one for some reason. Lou Adler was inducted, or "indicted", as Cheech and Chong said from the podium, and in his acceptance speech I hadn't realized the magnitude of his work. He paid a special tribute to Carole King who briefly performed and the song she sang reminded me for some reason of "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman whose pathos and poetry on this is so thick you could cut it with a knife. Adler also produced The Monterey Pop Festival* which I watched on DVD recently and was captured, again, by Janice Joplin's energy and singing on "Ball and Chain". Anyway, worth your time if it comes around again.
*Missed this cause I was in Mexico at the time providing some of the refreshments.

Utopia is (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbqkvblQj80&list=PL5cMp4MJRR_0OQTmP_WhfFAQXQycQXcCT) one of the better shows I've seen in a while. It's on Channel 4 in the UK, but there are ways to watch it. The soundtrack really ties it together.
This show is a must!

You guys are watching too much audio...
I've been having a hard time watching any new movies at home. So I've been kinda just throwing stuff up on Netflix, or maybe the old AX10 and let it run while I mess around...
Today I just finished watching The Core while I was getting caught up on things online. Hadn't seen it in a while. Still dumb. Still stupidly kinda amusing...

Anyone watched the Book thief film? how good is it? i have a few options and this movie caught my attention.

If anyone wants to watch something different, check out "I Am Divine", the documentary about the life of Glenn Milstead and his alter ego that became so popular in the 70s and 80s. I remember seeing the cover art for some of his and John Waters' movies at the video store when I was a kid, but other than that I really knew nothing about him. I found the documentary fascinating.

The Book Theif was very good.

Recently watched "Master and commander: the far side of the world" Blu ray. I'm a big fan of historic movies and this one was exceptional, very true to the fighting sail genre.

Last night actually. While the video quality shows it's date (1994), this was a great watch. What a show. Sade is smokin', the band is tight, and the video is well shot. If you like her music at all this is worth the watch/purchase.
