Title: SET Amp for Type 1
Post by: david.liebesman@gmail.com on 12 Jul 2013, 11:20 am
Hi Everybody,

I have a pair of Type 1s which I've been using with a YBA integrated (Audio Refinement Alpha). I love the combo, but I'm itching to try a SET amp. Does anybody have experiences with particular amps that they are willing to share? Thanks!

A tube amp that specializes in clarity and dynamics works well with these speakers.  The Audio Boutique Artist SET with 6550 tubes, the 6AV5 Ideal Innovations Elite 80 PP, the Glow Audio Amp Two EL-84 PP, or the Glow Audio Amp One EL-84 SEP would all be nice choices.

What about a pair of 40W 805A SET monoblocks?

I use an Audion 300B Silver Night amplifier (7w SET) and it's a great match. Dead quiet for a valve amp, even at high volumes.

The Hoyt-Bedford line is neither above or below the Omega line, just different, and in many cases would attract a different audience.  Few single driver speakers have their efficiency.  The Hoyt-Bedford line are one of the most unique I have found in my many years in audio.  Price wise they fall into about the middle of the Omega line.

Dear David; If you are willing to build it yourself(or pay their builder specialist), I can heartily recommend Bottlehead kits. they feature parallel-feed topology which provides extension into the depths and to the shimmering highs with no feedback. Suggest that you visit their site for an idea of what they offer, including the Bottlehead Forum, which provides builder-support of high quality.

Cheers, Hank

PS: I have several pieces built by their resident prototype-designer, Paul Birkeland.

i will chime-in with an earlier poster and recommend the Glow Amp 1. A great bang for the buck amp however it might not be the best choice if you have a large room or want to play at fairly high volume.   I think Eastern Electric, distributed by Morningstar Audio also has a very nice EL84 integrated amp for around $600?
