Could be wrong, but I would think even the crudest implementation uses a filter on the ST, perhaps a single cap?

You are most certainly right, but they didn't mention a cap- and without one that's a super tweeter that's not long for this world.  Any manipulation of the signal is a variation of a crossover.   

BTW, I still carry a flame for your SAM 1 speaker that you displayed at the LSAF.  Shoulda bought a pair.
