Mobile phones can take some good and some bad photos, some of them are pretty interesting...it's the camera you always have with you. Post your interesting shots here.

Awesome car ..
-
Will that car be available or is it a concept?
-
Yeah, I would agree that the camera you have is better than any camera you didn't bring when the right moment comes along. I'm pretty impressed w/ images I've seen from the new iPhone. It's probably the one real advantage I think it has over my EVO. (The EVO camera seems to have a lot of shutter lag, the images are pretty noisy in low light and the flash is worthless.) That Hipstamatic app for the iPhone is cool, but It seems like a fad that will play itself out.
Even though I've been a pro photographer for 25 years, I've never been much of a 'snapshooter'. I'm too much of a control freak who has to plan out shots ahead of time, so I was never one to carry around a camera all the time.
Still, there were a few times I wish I'd had something like my camera phone, like the when I saw a guy driving a mid 80's Monte Carlo, who wanted the low rider look, w/ the tiny wheels, but must have been on a budget so was running 4 temporary spares, :slap: or the time I saw this old timer, riding a stingray type bicycle w/ an extended fork, while smoking a cigarette and wearing a Cleveland Browns football helmet!

So this is apparently what happens when you put down kitty litter to soak up oil stains, but instead it it snows then melts, then freezes overnight. notice that the rocks seem to be suspended by the long arcs of ice. Just plain weird.

I'm pretty sure it's production. Not sure only have seen one R8 and this being the first Spyder.
This one was a concept.

Hey John, weren't you looking for a car? How about the nice red one? You know, brownie points and all. he he
-
Pez, that's really cool. Is that kitty litter or a pile of small stones?
Apparently the freeze pushed the water out of the kitty litter??????

I got it at O'Reily's. The bag says it's for soaking up oil stains AND kitty litter. As far as what phenomenon would push the moisture upward like that, I have no clue. The only guess I have is that something in the dust or rocks allows the water to travel upward similar to osmosis in plants.

Sort of impressionistic because of the lighting during the time of day and the fact that I used digital zoom. I was amazed that it turned out this way, I expected it to look really terrible, but instead it looks surreal and serene. Funniest part, it's at a gas station parking lot. :icon_lol:

Pez I was going to ask about this in the other thread but my mind was occupied with something complicated...that is truly bizarre and requires a scientific explanation. There must be some way to make money from this...discovery? i mean how many people have seen this effect? I think it looked like a very high shutter speed to my mind at first. How much elapsed time between each photo?

No shutter tricks, no photo tricks, this is just frozen ice! The different shots are different mounds of the oil absorbing gravel. I couldn't figure it out and it was blowing my mind. I didn't even notice the gravel stuck at the end of the ice arcs until after the photo was taken. Maybe I'll try to reproduce this with my refridgerator or something.

Tonight, taken down the block from my house. If you look closely, just over the top of the lights, there are mountains. Those are the Channel Islands. Really pretty cat! Love the "leopard" markings. What breed is it, ton1313?

She is a bengal. 3 years old. Fantastic animal, very active, vocal and personable.
They breed a domestic short hair cat with a wild asian leopard cat, then breed them down a few generations for more domestic blood, so you get a really cool look without the wild.

ton1313,
Is that a two-lap cat? I know the picture might be deceiving but your cat seems like a stretch version. My neighbors once had a black cat they found as a stray. I swear the cat was so long it could lay across two laps at the same time.

If she stretches out, she definately could be. She is longer, leaner, and taller than our domestic short hair, which I consider "normal" size at about 10 lbs.

Hi Jon L and all.
I don't like the quality of photos taken with cell phones,
well, that normal because I am/was a user of medium and large format cameras.
However, I must admit that you always carry with you a cell phone and therefore,
you are always ready to pop a picture when it shows up.
Nice picture, I like the dawn lighting and the patterns of the clouds.

Hi Jerry,
I read your post for the first time today and followed the link to the specialty tweeter xover used in the Fritz speaker.
I recall playing around with that idea long before the idea was shown to be conceived according to the Acoustic Reality web site.
http://web.archive.org/web/20110902214134/http://arhifi.dk/store/product.php?id_product=22
I had read the review of the Sonus Faber Extrema in Stereophile back in 1992. http://www.stereophile.com/standloudspeakers/915/index.html
Sonus Faber had incorporated the same idea into their tweeter back then. I have no idea who the original inventor may have been, its just funny how there is really nothing new under the sun as they say.

Built on a steep grade, so the front door is ground level, but the garage is 2 more levels down.

From what I've seen, I didn't think Jersey had any hills.
It's pretty hilly where I'm at too, so it's pretty common to see yards that aren't walkable without grabbing and pulling the next tree limb up.....

Yes NJ has mountains and hills. At least up here in Sussex county.
The grade is not really that bad. The property is on the less hilly side of the street across from the lake, the lake side lots are very steep !!
I often wonder how some of those folks get out of their driveways in the winter.
-
I grew up in Port Jervis New York. Right next to Pa and New Jersey. High Point in Jersey is one big hill.

Yes, it has a nice view, as the name implies the highest point in NJ.
I sometimes go stargazing around there its only 30 min up the road.
Or if I want darker skies I go a bit further to Shohola Pa. Very dark up there.

Interesting, I never knew. The only time I was there, was 10 years ago when I adopted my daughter. Everything I saw was flat, like VERY flat.
It had rained recently, so with nowhere for the water to run off, it was very swamp like. That's when I realized why it's called "The Garden State".

Hey, Alan I will definitely take more pics, but I don't climb trees, wish I could though.
I've always seem to find a cool Live Oak tree nearby when I am out in nature in the Bay Area. Was up in Marin last weekend and a visiting friend from Italy asked what that was.

Found this Red-tail Hawk at bottom of our driveway. Could not fly. Seemed exhausted. Walked unsteady. No other obvious signs of injury. Ended up carefully capturing him and taking him to local Wildlife and Rescue Center for rehab. Unfortunatley he did not respond to the treatment. Likely been on the ground for few days without food. He had to be euthanized. We were saddened he was not able to recover.
Had he recovered they'd have taken him back out to my place for release. He was assigned an ID number and we could have tracked his progress on-line. Such an outstanding organization to be sure!

This was shot with a Samsung 6 plus on full I don 't know jack about pictures.
This was shot Saturday (after a long evening with "Vinyl Lady") in Glacier National Park on "Going To The Sun Road". If you look at the line of yellow aspen towards the top of the on left side is where the road is. You can make out the road as it angles up to the middle of the picture. I forget what the ranking is but this is in the top 10 picturesque/Kodak moments in the USA. We passed on the 1934-35 White bus ride. At this time of the year we only got to Logan pass from the west side as the east was getting some needed repair.

Hi Phil A.
You might not know that, but on planet Vietnam they eat dog
and snake meat.
Mostly by the people in the northen part of Vietnam and NO,
I never tried eating those type of meat.
Where I live in Saigon (Officially Ho Chi Minh City) there are dogs that are stolen almost daily,

One of these days I need to set up there with the good camera at sunset then get Laura to drive under it with the TBird. Maybe I could even park the truck in front of the building too. That could make for a really cool picture.
I've got a few location shoots I want to do with the cars. Might even get a few car buddies involved too then publish them as posters. Too bad the Coral Courts doesn't exist anymore :?

If memory serves, there's one of those old hotel/motels from the 50's on Route 66 in Pacific with the curved glass block walls you could park in front of.

Looks like a 70. Is that on W/MM on the way to your place? If so, when did they widen the road?
-
It is indeed, just a mile from me. That road, the one that was labeled "Blood alley", was widened and straightened about 15 years ago. The stoplight we're sitting at, is MM and Hillsboro/House Springs road. When we were looking for property to build on, you had to drive through the creek to get to the Walmart. The widened road was finished shortly before we moved in, if memory serves.
I'm sure Tina knows the exact day. My memory is nowhere near that good.... :duh:

No love there ;)
-
Nope. Not at all. That's what not changing your oil often enough and $3600 looks like. :duh:
-
No love.........no maintenance........ ;)
-
Turbo fan? What's it out of Bob?
-
Yip, that's part of the fan. The other half is where it should be, inside the turbo housing.
This is the piece that fell on the floor when the tech pulled the unit from the car. :duh:
A result of clogged oil feed lines, since the oil changes weren't done often enough.
It's a 2008 Saab V6 with (iirc) 130,000 miles.
Way too young to die.
-
Wow! Just like my Dad. He never changed his own oil ao even checked it regularly. He had a friend that owned a Phillips 66 gas station and relied on the owner to call him for oil changes. Goes without saying the gas station owner had better things to remember than my Dad's oil changes.
I once owned a 2000 93 2.0T that I just loved. Great car!

Sorry to hear Bob, Just bought my 4th turbo vehicle, not only oil changes but no cheap oil filters, I've had techs tell me about oil filter material coming lose and getting stuck in the turbo oil lines.
-
Oh no... you missunderstood. THIS IS NOT MY CAR! :nono:
I work at the dealer, this is from a customers car.
I'm "the bad guy" that had to tell her that she's spending $3600 because she was lazy on changing her oil.
My vehicle has 237,000 and purrs like a kitten. :thumb:
-
Okay I'm glad I misunderstood
-
Me too! :o
-
This ONE (https://youtu.be/BtEQxh019lA) is for you Bob ;)
-
That's crazy. I can't imagine what would have caused that. I've seen oil "glop" out of an engine, but not be sticky like that. That's nuts.

Poor little 8" sub finally threw in the towel after 15 years of abuse from me.
Was so happy with it, I immediately called the dealer to get an exact OE replacement, alas, the part has been discontinued.

I imagine you can find something very close that will perform as well if not better, Bob. Get all the number you can off of it and do some Googling. :thumb:
-
Bob, is the speaker shot, or just the surround ? If it's just the surround you should be able to find someone to repair it. I had a similar issue with the Magnat woofers in my Dahlquist 'Compact' Monitors after about 20 years. The local SpeakerLab redid the surrounds & they've been going strong for close to 10 yrs now.
-
I thought about re-foaming, but due to the knocking sound when the bass hits, I figured it's shot.
I bought the follow driver as a replacement. The worst part is that the OE driver had ears that extended past the perimeter of the drivers basket.
Those ears "nested" into the plastic enclosure of the OE sub-cabinet.
The driver I bought will stand 'proud' of that, so mods will be a necessity, there's no other option besides building my own enclosure.
I *REALLY* didn't want to make this a project, I wanted an OE replacement that simply bolted in.
But..... ....... I'm an "audiophile", so as we all know, I'll go to the ends of the earth to make stuff work. :duh:
I'll keep ya posted.

Thank you. :D
Yea.... ... the tabs that protrude from the old basket are "nested" into the molded enclosure build into the body of the Yukon.
So making that Pioneer fit will indeed be a modification, to say the least. :duh:
I didn't want another project, but.....

It's funny how one looks 5 minutes through a viewfinder and does not see offending stuff, which becomes obvious the first time you look at the screen (or at the camera back), as soon as the opportunity is gone.

Iam not recognize these foods, what is the menu here besides two eggs?
"Southern American", might even borderline on "soulfood".
Upper left plate is French toast, with maple syrup and powdered sugar.
Right side is biscuits and sausage gravy. A definity "southern" food.
Lower plate, right side are potatoes (cubed and cooked in a skillet in bacon grease), left is bacon, and below that is ground pork sausage pattie.

Is that your desktop rig, Bob? Looks pretty sweet! Make and model of the speakers?
Yes Sir, this is my PC desk. It's what I call "Second row, center seat" to the main 2 channel and HT rig right in front of me.
My absolute favorite PC planar speakers died recently when I knocked one on the floor and broke a magnet. :duh:
In search of something in the $100 range, I found these on Amazon. I'm day two into them, and so far, think my hundred bucks was well spent.
The speakers are something I've never heard of. Here's the link. (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016P9HJIA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) Not giving them my official "seal of approval" just yet.
The first 30 minutes they played yesterday, I was ready to box them up and send them back. I've let them play at a medium-highish volume for 24 hours, and tonight I'm giving them a "second impression", so to speak. Regardless, they're $99. I think they're keepers, but since I bought them "Prime", I've got 30 days to try them out. If they don't work out, I've since found a $99 pair of Klipsch I'll try. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074FC37Q5/ref=dra_a_ms_ss_hn_xx_P1250_1000?psc=1&tag=dradisplay-20&ascsubtag=5c7e46169c49f93ee514ee473d429d19_S)
They seem to recreate sounds very well, but that "veil" we all talk about does seem to be present. In the spirit of honesty, that tube amp isn't actually hooked up right now. I just turned it on for visual effect. I need to make a pair of cable that are RCA and banana.
Sorry about the "artistic licence" I took there.
For anybody that cares, I can give final impressions of the speakers in a week or two.
Oh... Also, in the interest of honesty and all that, The image on my monitor is from Brad Simmons (his 'signature' in the lower right corner).
He's one of my BBQ forum guys. I stole that image from the "Picture of the Day" thread there. No. I'm not proud.

I've been hearing good things about Edifier recently. This Youtube audio reviewer, Zeos Pantera, likes the $400 S2000 Pro (active, with DSP) very much... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YFIMME0j0Q (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YFIMME0j0Q)
Will be interested to hear what you find with the ones you picked up.

While I'm at a price point MUCH lower than his, I will say I'm warming up to these speakers. I'd love to give the $400 ones a test drive, but that's not in the cards right now.
For a cheap Chinese unit, they're impressive so far.
Oh.... and they have tone controls, which is awesome. :icon_twisted:

Ooh, new project, Bob?
Yes, indeed Jake! :thumb:
It started out as a budget project. Something for the PC desk in the HT room, but it's grown (financially) exponentially since day one. The cabinets may look familiar?
They're the "extras" rolling around the basement of Ryan at Vapor. The drivers are Daytons. I've since double my original dollar amount. :duh:
-
Cool project! I totally understand on the budget getting out of hand. Once the exponent raises above 3 things can get a little crazy. Many moons ago I rebuilt a pair of Dynaco Mk III mono amps and while it was fun it was also costly.
So, have fun and don't let your wallet get in the way.

So, have fun and don't let your wallet get in the way.
No doubt!?!!? :duh:
He asked how I was going to finish them. I said I was tired of the "usual" black, and might go out on a limb and do somethign radical.
My wife said I should go full on Ferrari red! :o
Ryan said, "If that's the case, I've got some awesome automotive paints in stock we can use".
Oh Lord... what have I done.
more to come....

Oh Lord... what have I done.
Started an awesome project that will evolve to its completion. Go with the flow and see where it takes you.
more to come....
I hope so! May I suggest you start a thread on this build in the Enclosures Circle?
BTW - I am also big Tull fan. Where did you get the boxed set? Amazon currently lists the Audio CD at $596.91 for used. Vinyl $49.99 and up for used and $200 for new. Last but not least I could purchase it on cassette for $5.09 used or $207.89 for new! Seriously, I would like to find one.
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for finish. I like this color.

The whole photobucket thing really let the wind out of my sails as far as having a photo hosting site I can trust, long term. All the awesome threads I've had over the years are destroyed (remember the speaker build with my daughter?). I'm using Facebook to host my pics now, but I'm pretty much just "piddling" with posting photos. I don't trust they won't do the same thing Photobucket did. Plus, their photo album structure is absolutely horrible. I had about 3500 photos stored on Photobucket, I can't imagine that on Facebook with their current "way" of doing things..
I'd be willing to sell you the Tull albums. If you're interested, lemme know.
I like that color too. Still not sure what I'll go with. More than likely, it'll be whatever Ryan has in his "leftovers". Something flashy though, for sure.
-
Yeah, I remember your (and a plenty of others) frustration with PB. Wonder how they are doing financially?
You could host the photos for just the build here on AC.
Please PM me on the Tull boxed set.
That orange probably looks better on a car than a pair of speakers but I'm sure Ryan will come up with something very cool. Should be a fun build and the finished speakers will sound great!

No chance I'll ever store my pics on an "audio site" again. The first person to burn me on that was Steve Deckert many, many years ago.
He decided to 'purge' his entire database, forum and gallery entirely. He started over with everyting. Every member woke up one morning to the cold fact that "you're not a member anymore, and your pictures are gone".
So.... Decware and Photobucket have both done this to me. At this point, I won't trust a single man that owns an audio forum, I won't trust a company that markets themselves as a "photo hosting site", and I won't trust Facebook. Suffice it to say that this pain runs deep. No one cares about such things, even if you pay them (like I did Photobucket).
As far as how Photobucket is doing financially, I hope they burn in hell forever visualizing the images they've stolen from the forums across the planet. Their price of more than one dollar a day is way beyond ludicrous. I paid something like $24 a year.
I've got a PM inbound, shortly...

No soldering or welding on my part. I did use a plasma cutter on the lower piece (in an attempt to use a cheap "universal" catalytic converter, despite my knowledge of such things) but ultimately threw away the entire section and installed an aftermarket part. Those "universal" pieces never fit anything. I knew that, and am ashamed that I even tried it.
Overall, Not bad. Spent $200 to install a new "Cat" these days. I just had to choose the right one to install. :duh:

Thanks. It was quite simple though. Just opened the door slowly, watched them for a while taking a few photos. They more or less live here.
Here's last year's fawn, "hiding" at the back doorstep while the mom's away.

My wife and I were having lunch yesterday when we heard a loud noise on our kitchen skylight glass. I looked up, noticed a shadow and my first thought was that it was a raven, as they are frequent visitors in our neighborhood. But then it became apparent that it was a hawk, who had spotted our lunch spread out on the table below. We were having (among other things) leftover ribs, and the bones and uneaten ribs were in a couple of dishes on the table below the skylight.
The hawk was staring right at us and the food and was very determined to get through the (inch thick) skylight glass. I'm glad that we weren't eating in the backyard! The pictures taken with an iPhone and are somewhat blurry since the fog was very heavy that morning and the skylight was still quite wet.
We frequently see/hear hawks and other wildlife in Golden Gate Park which is only several blocks away from our house. But we have never experienced this before, although we have to bungee tie our trash and compost bins to guard against nightly visits by raccoons.

Fun with scorpions. A few times a year Ms. Alice and I take a night walk in Sabino Canyon in the Coronado National Forest (https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/coronado/recarea/?recid=75425), 15 minutes outside of Tucson, AZ. Sabino Canyon is open 24 hours and is beautiful during the day with plenty of hiking trails from easy to extreme and a narrated 7.4 mile emission-free electric tram to the top of the canyon.
Night walks on the paved road are equally amazing, you never know what you will come across. If there is no moon like last night it can be almost pitch black with only the stars to light your way. The few people we meet stop after 1/2 mile, we go further until we are all alone in total darkness in the middle of the wilderness. We are surrounded by rattlesnakes, bobcats, mountain lions, deer, javelina, coyotes, coatimundi and scorpions.
Masters of camouflage, you will never see a scorpion in the desert but at night with a ultraviolet flashlight they glow a florescent green. On a good night we will see a scorpion every 4 feet no matter where we look. It's amazing how alive the desert is.
This scorpion was crossing the road, without a ultraviolet light he would be hard to see
