Thanks again for all the sage advice.  Does anyone know whether the TV manufacturers will build in scalers eventually so we won't have to purchase them separately for 4 by 3 broadcasts on a widescreen?  How is LCOS different?  kevin

Tuners must be in all sets sold in USA > = 36"  from July on per Federal uhh statute or law.

LCOS is Liquid Crystal on Silicon.  It's a variation on LCD.  So far it's Sony, JVC and now LG is jumping into the fray on that tech.

Also, Toshiba is reportedly producing SED sets 1st Q 06.  These have the form factor of Plasma @ 2.75" thick and the PQ of CRT.

Go hang out on AVS for a bit.  Read up on the Plasma and RPTV sections.  Do a search for SED and LCOS.  Your choices are:

SED (2006)
PLASMA (ED, HD)
CRT (direct view)
CRT (RP)
CRT (direct view, thin cabinets in 2006)
LCD
LCOS
DLP

...and various implementaions of the above in projectors. Well except for SED and PLASMA.  Thats not including some develpmental technologies that we wont see for years like carbon nanotube, so the real question is:  How long can you wait?

You will find fans of them all and 'discussions' aplenty.  If you have the itch now, get a RP CRT for cheap as these are being phased out.  DO your research though and plan to pay to have it ISF'd.  Most importantly, get out and look.
