Hi there!
As the new facilitator/moderator of the forum, I'd like to start off with a "photo sticky" of our Home Theater rooms.
It's time to show off your "man cave".
Not necessarily close ups of the amps and speakers, we've all seen those. I'm talking about the entire front wall, side walls, rear walls. The angles we don't normally see.
A huge inventoried write up of your equipment is not necessary, just a short caption under each photo of what's shown. Maybe a comment or two of things we may not notice at first glance.

- This is a couple month old photo, but the "yardsale" like appearance of drivers has recently dwindled considerably due to the addition of infinite baffle.
- The screen is a 16:9 140" diagonal I built a few years ago. It's hinged at the top to access a storage area behind. Total width is 10' side to side.

- This is closer to what it looks like today. Shown are the two front mains, dual subs, and center channel. All 15" HawthorneAudio drivers. Under the screen are four more H.A. drivers in (almost) infinite baffle (I.B.)
- To the left of the photograph behind the DIY smoked glass door is the equipment rack. Wasn't the focus of the photo when I snapped it so it's hard to see in there, but the glowing LED's that can be seen starting from the top is the DirecTv Tivo receiver, Harman Kardon receiver (the 'hub' of the room), and Jolida tube amp glowing towards the bottom.
- "White Lightning Cables" are not in the photo, but are a recent edition.
- CD, DVD, and LP storage in the cabinets under and to the sides of the screen.

An accidental photograph, but I think it looks cool. The blue glow is caused from the "blue screen of nothing" when no content is being fed to the projector.
- Berkline microfiber reclining HT seating. Very nice
- Sanyo PLV-Z2 780p/1080i projector. Wonderful machine (no dust blobs. ever.)
- 10" H.A. Coaxials for rear surrounds have since received new clothes, but still provide rear content.
- My Dell PC centered between and behind the seating provide a nice audible and visual second row experience when I'm online chatting with you folks, or playing with EAC/FLAC, SlimServer stuff.

My gallery pix need serious updating, the turntable is not in the pictures. Also the plasma screen does not look that washed out in real life.

Since this setup we've completely changed the room orientation and gotten rid of the 'entertainment center'. Before we had the Mits on the long wall (25x12 room). Now we've got it on the 12' wall. Unfortunately I can't take pics of the new room setup for a few more days as we are smack dab in the middle of repainting the room (we are about halfway through the ceiling and just prepping the walls). I'll post some pics in a week or two.

The Paradigm Studio 20's (left, right centre) and 100's (left, right back corner) are the fronts. Both powered by the 3B SST.
The Paradigm Monitor 9's (front left, right corner) are surrounds powered by the 3B ST. The B&W are also surrounds powered by the Yamaha av/receiver.
The center and rear channel speakers are powered by the Bryston 2B Lp.
When listening to music 95% of the time, receiver is set to 6ch stereo soundfield. For movies I usually use Spectacle soundfield.
The studio 100's are aimed to bounce off the front wall. This serves to blend soundfield making localizing speakers difficult as well as not blasting directly in my ears.

18' by 12' by 7' All the walls and ceiling are covered with at least 5" multilayer sound absorbing material. Floor has 3 layers of carpet and padding. The room is quite dead, wide band Rt60 is < 0.2s
The room has 9 identical IB 2way 12"/horn combo speakers and occasionally 2 18" sealed subs are in service. Planning to move them to IB too.
The screen is 120" curved.
The projector is an ELECTROHOME CRT projector, video sourcees are either htpc or modified Bravo D1 at 1440/960p 72 Hz refresh via DVI. No HD content yet, don't care much for what is available on HD currently.
The room and playback is optimized for multichannel ambiophonic audio reproduction. All audio processing is done on a PC for the 9 channels.
BTW before I built it, I was one of the gusy who loudly proclaimed, that a small screen and mono sound is enough for the movies I consider worthwile to watch. Since the HT room in service, my opinion changed substantially. :D

Here's mine. A full SP Tech 2 channel and 5.1 music system, along with a movie 7.1 system (using the same front 3 channels for both 5.1 and 7.1). The screen is a Stewart Studiotek 130 110" 16:9 wall mount. The mains are SP TEch Revelation MR1 MKIII's, driven by a McCormack DNA-500 amp; the center an SP Tech Continuum AD, powered by a McCormack DNA 1 Deluxe...all three speakers with Ultimate Mundorf external crossover boxes. The LFE sub is a Paradigm Servo 15.

The rear music speakers are SP Tech Continuums with Intermediate Mundorf external crossovers (driven by a soon-to-be McCormack DNA-225, currently an RB-991); the music surrounds, side and rear wall-mounted (rears just barely in view at top of pic), are Alon Centris dipoles and driven by an Anthem PVA5. As you can see the room is well trapped by over a dozen of Ethan Winer's RealTrap bass traps, RFZ's and diffusors.

The room is pretty much equipped-out, but will undergo a SIGNIFICANT cosmetic facelift this summer. The ceiling and sloped areas will be painted black, the walls dark gray and the carpet has just been ordered (dark gray/black patterned). The back third of the room (behind the front row of chairs) will be raised 8 inches, to create a second row of seats (sofa) and be even with the foyer entrance (where the pic was taken). The two equipment towers are somewhat dedicated; one audio, one video, with a 2M set of HT bypass cables connecting them. Check my system page for the equipment list.

I have two questions, one for the whole room and one for Mag, in particular.
First, for the whole room: How do I make my pictures show up in the body of my post like this?
Second, for Mag: after climbing over all of that gear inside our own minds, should we perhaps be taking any sort of ironic message from the fact that the video monitor in your last picture has the caption, "Whale Sighting"? :lol:

At the time of the photos, probably 2001 or so, the system was a Sony vpl-wv10ht, denon avp-8000 dts, outlaw 750, hsu vtf-2 sub, mains were my old Vandy 2Ci's and the center and surrounds were monitor audio. I forget which model but the dvd was a pioneer elite and tv was a dish HD receiver. Screen was 104" Da-Lite I think.
It eventually received quite a bit of foam, dark red carpet and darker walls. Given that it was the basement it was really dark. :) Oh yea, I miss the pinball games as well.

yes it is a conrad johnson met 1. I can say I am very pleased with the tube performance. really did not do a a/b comparison with anything else. purchased it along with new amps at the same time.

You know, as I browsed through that set of HT layouts on deputy dog, I was struck by the same thought over and over: How does one watch a movie from a different genre on any of them? I mean to say, how do you sit down in the front parlor of the Nautilus, and not watch "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" for the eleventeen-millionth time? I'd feel silly watching "Unforgiven" or "Brazil" or "The Five Obstructions" in any of these theaters; it would pull me out of the experience of watching the movie.
So here's my request: Who's got a relatively inexpensive (say $40k or so) home theater built around the basic, if somewhat tired, concept of an Art Deco movie theater, c. 1939, that I can shamelessly expropriate? I mean, as far as I'm concerned, if it doesn't have a luminous-dial clock hanging on the wall and curved-brass recessed lighting, it ain't a home theater.

Basically just a 2-channel system with video at the moment. Not even a screen being used. Used mostly for music videos and to entertain my children. A lot has changed since this picture and will change again soon.
It will become a 4 channel system with custom CLS-9 (enhanced version of GR Research LS-9) speakers up front and OB-7's in the rear. All tubes throughout.

About a month ago my Arcam AVR-100 started acting up. After looking at a bunch of different integrateds and not being overly happy with any of them, we decided to go for the Integra DTC 9.8. So I could get a bit of tube flavor into the system I decided on getting the factory modified JoLida 1501A for the front L/R (100 wpc) and the modified JoLida 1703A (75x3wpc) on C/LR/RR. With some luck my new amps will show up this week. It should sound pretty good.

The room is 21' wide, 19' deep, and has a ceiling rising from 6.5 to 12'. Here's most of the rear with different stuff on the left wall.

Each surround speaker is a combination of the large, grilled, very-full-range system built into the rear 'ceiling' plus the small, white-colored speaker hanging on the beam. These produce a very diffuse sound from the surround channels, which is exactly what I want.

The last two rooms show us the vast difference between owners preferences regarding the required amount of diffusion and absorption in a Home Theater.

About the only thing the wife has allowed me to do is put down a carpet. Master Cheif had to go. I have worked on her to let my add some baffles, but I have been denied. The carpet help instantly.

I first got the diffuser panels for the living room to help with soundproofing. I still wasn't able to contain the sound as the walls are thin in my old house. So I moved location to the basement.
This room is much more lively than previous room. I could lower the volume level approx. 5 db while still being perceived as loud as living room. With more detail and clarity.
I listened without the panels for about a month, so that I could tell what affect they were having when I placed them in the room. They seemed to add a still quietness to an already quiet room. Marginally focusing the sound, revealing more detail/clarity in music.
The photo above is an updated speaker arrangement.
The rear center speaker facing the wall makes vocals sound fuller. The Studio 100's and the B&W 601's on the shelf, are the front mains. There location makes for a wide solid front center soundstage. The B&W's are critical in this location for adding to the width of the center channel as well as complimenting the Studio 100's in presenting a cohesive image. The monitor 9's in the corner of the room, add width to the overall soundstage making for a more natural presentation in MC stereo, compared to just 2-channel. Which can be done with just the Studio 100's. The other two bookshelf speakers located above the Studio 100's. aren't really needed ,except for the YPAO on my Yamaha to work, they add fill.
Listening mostly in MC stereo, bass is distributed more evenly than with 2-channel stereo. 2-channel stereo by itself is good, but I prefer the wide soundstage of MC stereo. With MC recordings such as sacd or dts, the soundstage it's far superior to 2-channel stereo in this room.

I love the XLobby display. I downloaded it once and I actually bought CQC but I never had the time to commit to the programming/learning curve. I've been using my HTPC for music and movies but it's not nearly that elegant. I need someone to come over and program my HTPC so I can have a front end like that. Nice!

Design is based around the WAR Audio Dianne speaker surrounded by 2 sets of the open baffle rhythmic /GR research sub woofers. So the raven r1 ribbon, two accuton mid woofers and 6 12inch servo controlled sub woofers.
Surround speakers shown here are just place holders, and so are the amps and such. (most likely to use nuforce kit)
Real wall is concave shape and ceiling has acoustic tiles on it. I am planning on having the whole system controlled with a ps3.

I think it's a very impressive design. However after a few minutes I thought the sofas are little tacky. Perhaps a different style sofa in dark brown, IMO.
I know you said the other speakers are just place holders. The center channel is too dinky. You need a big wide center to anchor the sound to the front. Because I'm thinking with the big screen and the wide left,right speaker placement. I would be able to locate the speaker source rather easily. A big wide center channel would help towards a more seamless front soundfield.

You probably know that ribbons have very limited vertical dispersion? The centre will have the same tweets and same or similar mids?

The main speakers re arranged so the tweeters are ear level because of ribbon's vertical dispersion. Ceiling has a proper vault in it now. I beefed up the centre but its still just place holders.
Do you guys think a centre channel is important? Given the seating layout? A matching centre would cost about 3k on top of the 12k+ for the main speakers, so if it wasn't necessary I could use that elsewhere in the budget, I'm not a HT expert though.

The center should be the MTM section of the mains. Also with Dannys new OB 12 high sensitivity speakers a more uniform look can be had with 7 12s in the verticle columns and the better dispersion, sensitivity, less costly drivers, no box, and the cost savings of not needing a dozen monoblocks to drive anything. It would be cool to see those huge columns being driven by something like that 5 channel Cary 300B amp.

Well the columns are rythmik servo amp powered except the MTM section. Likely ill have the whole thing powered by the nuforce 7 channel amp otherwise.
the OB12 you mentioned is the coax driver with two of these subwoofer drivers i saw? Its certainly a possibility, though the highs wouldn't be as sweet as the raven, and nor would the midrange even come close to the accutons I don't think. But at the end of the day it might be a good option budget wise.

If your mains image well and the seating area is in the "sweet spot", a phantom center can work very well. That being said, I haven't run a center in over a year and couldn't be happier.

werticus - you should really, really get an acoustically transparent screen to stick the center channel behind. it makes a world of difference for the movie experience. really...there's no going back.

I've run both a phantom center and a real center.
A properly matched center is absolutely my preference.
But... that's in my room, in my system with my ears.
Your preference could be different.
I would try to find a center to audition in your system prior to purchase.
Then you'll have your answer.

Certainly easy at this stage to change things, so Ill look into these transparent screens... there is easily enough space for one.
here is an update: with proper model's made for the Dianne, and the surrounds im likely to use because they can be easily hidden into the bulkhead and perform very well, focal coax speakers.

Yeah the other side has the doors as well which opens up onto a deck for alfresco dining and then beyond that a pool. So you can see from the back yard right out the front and some heavy set curtains to block it all off when its movie time.
The doors is a major reason for the open baffle woofers because i just couldnt trust them to not rattle and be generally annoying with sealed sub's.
But without the doors the WAF factor drops to zero.

I'm experimenting with an OB center with a Mac tweeter and some sonance in-wall speakers. So far, it doesn't blend well with the infinity's and it's a little too echoey, but it's better than using a phantom center.

This is the rear of the room, showing the new riser installed for second rown seating, the latest Realtraps (Corner Mondos, Difffusors, and ceiling-based miniTraps) and the new GIK Art Panels. The speakers in the corner are SP Tech Continuums and dedicated to 5.1 music surround programs only. The 4 movie surrounds are wall-mounted (2 shown on sloped back ceiling).

Our theatre design by us. We built our screen, all acoustic wall panels (DIY), and the black velvet curtains.
Many hours of effort by myself (I am the builder) and my subcontractors went into this project. The screen size is 155" diagonal. The projector is a Panny PTAX 100U. It was fairly easy as we were building a new home at the time.

This is our homecinema. This room is an adition to the house. This makes it harder for the sound to bounce in to the main part of the house. The walls and the sealing are not in direct conntact with the inner wall or sealing. This way I can controll where the sound goes.
The front wall is tripple design with insolation between each layer. The wall is also angled twoards the room corners from the 106" screen, this is done to allow a closer placement of the front speakers.
There is a light absorbent and high to mid frq absorbent on the front wall.
The screen is built in the wall to make a cleaner look, and the spreadlight from PJ does not create shadows.
The flooring floats on 2" thick styrofoam with wall to wall carpeting on top, this smoothen out the midrange amplification witch occoures on wooden flooring.
Behind sweetspot is a 2 foot thick sound absorbent that dampen a wide frq of reflections. This I use to fine tune the sound from the speakers twoards sweetspot.
Side walls with DVD cabinets and high frq absorbents on the front sides. This takes care of the front and rear first reflections. Enhanced 3D effects and put the sound more in the room vs from the speakers.
Sealing low frq dampened with cavity tuned plaster sealing. Eliminates bouncing soundwaves within the room.
Electric wiering is shielded from signal wiering, and a dedicated 16A powerfeed to the equipment. All wiering is hidden in the walls, and pulled thru inwall tubes, this makes wier replacement possible.

Beautiful setup, nice finish on the Danley bet it sounds great. I heard the Prodigy's about 10 years or so ago when they were first released fantastic speakers. Noticed your ML center is back a few inches on your TV stand, have you ever thought about moving it to the edge of the stand to get rid of that first reflection?

I have had a lot of fun with all of them!
There are always going to be certain compromises with any speaker system and what it is used for.
I have always been a 2-channel stereo purist, even with my home A/V systems.
I am probably 40% Music/Concert Blu-Ray and 60% movies.
So far I am happy with my latest speakers and will for sure test them to the extremes.
They image very well and have tight, thunderous bass thanks to the (4) 15" woofers and (2) 1000 watt internal subwoofer amps.
There are controls on the back of each speaker to allow a lot of adjustability with the tweeter and bass output, depending on the room acoustics.
The craftsmanship in these speakers is impeccable and the finish is similar to violin lacquer.

It is not as nice as some of the rooms here. My system last year with a 55" LED screen. :) Got rid of the BAT VK-500 amp and replaced it with a pair of Bryston 7BSST. I still have the vintage tube McIntosh MC-60 monos.

Sweet setup. Bryston 7BSST and the BAT VK-500 amp are 2 very different sounding amps. Why did you switch and what are you pluses and minuses between them.

Thanks. You are correct, they are both equally good but different amps. When I switched from Sonus Faber to PMC speakers, the BAT didn't have the synergy anymore. I think the Bryston amps are more refined and cleaner sounding. It is a synergy thing.

I used to have a Sonus Faber Grand Piano and the BAT seems to have synergy with those speakers. The Grand Piano seems to like Jazz, vocals perfectly but not rock/alternative music. I want to try a full-range sounding speakers that has a small foot print. The PMC OB1i seems to play all sorts of genre very well with Bryston amps and BAT VK-51SE tube preamp.
Looks very nice to me. Great to see PMCs in an HT setup.

Levi, I had the same pre you have (BAT VK-51SE) and was very happy with it. It was paired with a Spectron Musician III SE Mark2 and the synergy was exceptional. At the time I had Totem Winds pulling double duty as my main speakers for 2channel and also L/R for home theater. The Winds were amazing for movie soundtracks.
How is your PMC center for off axis listening since the driver locations and transmission line port are not in standard locations for a center?

The PMC center channel off axis screen dialogue is cohesive. I hardly notice it is there when watching TV or movies anywhere in the room. That should be a good thing.
All I know is I have come a long way.

Past tense. Was. And I've been going in the wrong direction.
I've been ramping up my learning and education on the 2 channel side of things, so I slowly weaned myself of HT to make that happen, ht dollar to 2ch dollar.
Then came some major room changes in the house; I now have one room for 2 channel and home theater.
At present I'm an audience looking for a show.
Sold my Oppo BDP-83SE, AVR, and the speakers that made up the 5 in 5.1 The .1 (actually .2) may also be on its way out via a sale.
I will be getting back in, slowly. Oppo BDP-93 first. Then an AVR or multi-amp. Then a major decision regarding which speakers to go with.

It is also our living room so it is full of toys and stuff too.

While the whole ht to 2ch move was evolving for me, I had a pair of SongTowers and a SongCenter in L/R/C for HT. Cannot say enough about how well they did. And based on all the posts on the Salk Boards, you are in for large helpings of ht fun as you move up Jim's line.

Well, the Hedback Design room acoustic makeover is completed. We installed the large ceiling diffusor/trap yesterday and the sound of the room is transformational...a qualitative shift in everything...tonality, image specificity, detail, naturalness, soundstage depth. It's as if I told the room to "settle down and let me listen" and a whole new world opened up. Hell, it will probably force me to relook speaker positioning, etc...except my 90 minute listening session last night was sooo good that I'm not sure i wanna fix what ain't broken.
Thanks to Jeff Hedback (designer/acoustic engineer), my local craftsman extraordinaire Doug Carpenter (yes, that's his real last name :) ) and to my wife and family for putting up with this.
All told, the major changes were:
* front corner traps, floor to ceiling, custom made. Allowed me to repurpose the Realtrap Mondo corners to the back sloped area.
* a 400 lb tuned membrane "floating wall" on the front wall, behind the screen assembly, which brought about amazing soundstage and balance (fewer nulls, etc) improvements by itself
* side wall diffusors and tetrahedral treatments that open up the room and improve even surround high rez imaging.
* the piece de resistance, a large ceiling cloud, hanging from acoustical clips, made up of wood diffusors and 4 inches of bass trapping foam insulation. (There is light roping installed but it shows up very slightly....no big deal, the roping set me back $12.). The energy held up in that ceiling area was quite high, caused mostly by my sloped ceiling design when we built the house. it was a good idea at the time! :)
All of the Realtrap products and GIK art panels continue to do their jobs (in many cases re-positioned), and work in tandem with the Hedback Design custom built foundation.
(Pictures have darkening window treatments recessed to show natural light, but I never listen/watch that way. Left wall area is also cleared of RFZ trap for same reason, to let light in).

(Jeff) Hedback Designs did an incredible job of modeling my room, guiding me through recording some analysis sweeps, etc and explaining the deliverables in both very technical and dumb'd down ted mode. Moreover, he produced a detailed, 3D google sketchup set of documents that Doug worked off of without a hitch. Jeff never visited the site (yet :) ) but had huge hunches that he never waivered from, even when I panicked several times during the project. Net/net, Jeff knows his sh$% !!! And the value prop is quite amazing.
Oh, and thanks also go to Art Smuck here at AC for turning me onto Jeff once i saw and heard about his own room transformation here. I contacted Art asap and we spoke several times (and finally met at RMAF). Thanks Art! :thumb:

The diffusors are technically known as HdAcoustics’ HAR slats (Helmholtz Angled Reflectors). They are a repeating set of four angled diffusors, built out of poplar, stained and poly'd. The side wall diffusors have a backing that is less bass trap and more just a sturdy frame that was covered in the same GOM material as the "sails" above them. The ceiling system is indeed both a huge bass trap, with 3 inches of air separating the ceiling with the topside of the cloud, 4 inches of acoustic material, and then several sets of HDAcoustics HAR slats running east-west. The size, materials and HAR pattern were designed specifically for my room, but Jeff would use the same concept to tackle similar issues elsewhere.

I have had a lot of fun with all of them!
There are always going to be certain compromises with any speaker system and what it is used for.
I have always been a 2-channel stereo purist, even with my home A/V systems.
I am probably 40% Music/Concert Blu-Ray and 60% movies.
So far I am happy with my latest speakers and will for sure test them to the extremes.
They image very well and have tight, thunderous bass thanks to the (4) 15" woofers and (2) 1000 watt internal subwoofer amps.
There are controls on the back of each speaker to allow a lot of adjustability with the tweeter and bass output, depending on the room acoustics.
The craftsmanship in these speakers is impeccable and the finish is similar to violin lacquer.

My dedicated home theater / stereo room is almost complete but I still need to stain the front AV cabinet to match the wood on the main speakers. The room is in my basement and was purpose built to be as symmetrical as possible and sound proofed. Room treatments includes bass traps in the front corners and treatments on the side walls as well as behind the curtains on the front wall.
Special thanks go to Bryan Pape who helped design the room and place the acoustic treatments.

Behind the drums is a bit of a walk way and then cabinets on the back wall, which spoiled any possibility of diffusion on the back wall but the cabinets are six feet or so behind me so any reflections are delayed.

No need Big Red....Cymbals will sound when a certain freq. hits for a time but its not like a typical cymbal sound-crash or whatever its more like a shimmer type sound that get louder as the freq does. I think the freq. that triggers the shimmering is unique to each cymbal.....I'm not 100 percent on that whole thing though...so grain of salt here.

Thank you Big Red. Since the drums are electronic, all of the skins are now mesh and the metal cymbals are replaced with plastic so there are no resonance issues that could be encountered with traditional drums.

There have been numerous changes in the audio system since this photo was taken, but the video side of the equation is unchanged - Runco RS-1100 projecting onto a 92" Stewart Filmscreen (the motorized drop screen seemed a must in the attempt to preserve the integrity of my integrated 2-channel music system). Thanks Bob,for such a small room it turned out pretty good considering I have two concrete walls(front and right side)insulated and dry walled.
Ceiling is low,thats where I put 10" of roxull(safe+sound) throughout the ceiling joists.ceiling tiles are painted with Behr(midnight sky)a very deep blue(almost a black colour) and the walls are a brown carmel colour.
Have basstraps surrounding the ceiling wall corners and bass traps and diffusers on the back wall(7'W)as there is an open hallway there.
No windows so she is terrific for movies.
I made a cavity in the left side wall where I put my amp rack to free up the front where I installed a 128X50" cinema scope screen(16X9)before.
The rack is powered by 28SST2's+7Bsst(M's+C) and to the side of the back wall is a rack with components and a 4Bsst for the back surrounds.
She does HT and two channel as I run separate XLR`s for two channel as I just switch out the cables behind the front amps(very quick).
I use the Vac Sig MKII for two channel and Av-8 for movies.
For what I had to work with size wise and restrictions structure wise,she turned out quite good for sure,and no I`m not buying another house to have a bigger room,unless............................... :lol: .

Oppo '95, Epson UB8700 sitting about 13' from the screen and about 3' behind me, Severtson 2.35-ratio screen that's 8' wide (NOT diagonal). I manually adjust the PJ to fill the screen with Panavision-ratio images, and at my 10.5' viewing distance, the pixels aren't visible. Said another way, images are more film-like in my room than they are in a theater, where I CAN see the pixels.
Audio stuff:
Conrad-johnson all-analog, vacuumtubed MET1 preamp; McCormack DNA-750 poweramps driving Vandersteen 5A main speakers; McC DNA-HT5 poweramp driving Vandersteen VCC-1 centerchannel speaker (and soon, with a separate channel, the DIY bassbox the VCC-1 is sitting on); custom in-wall surrounds driven by 2 'HT5 channels; DIY SuperSubs driven by the Crown CDi1000; gobs of hi-end powerconditioning (mostly Audience) and powercable; the best IC that I can afford; and all important cable lifted from the carpeted floor.

Hi folks, here is my dedicated HT setup. It is in a room designed specifically for these large electrostats and an infinite baffle sub. The room has significant acoustic treatments based on careful analysis and measurements. The front sidewall treatments are custom featuring an ESL motif with stator panels integrated into the deign
The speakers are highly customized MartinLogans, not a single one is stock, they all run off a sophisticated active crossover and multi-amp setup. I wanted a high performance center channel, so I designed and built my own large-format ESL center that sits behind the AT screen.
Designed to be a reference-grade multichannel audio system first, the rig delivers amazing results on the high-rez recordings from Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree and others). It's also not bad as an HT for movies with a 4K JVC projector.

My 90's vintage Definitive Technology BP10's (all woofers replaced a couple years go aftr I found that the surrounds and woofers were not attached-ummm), C1, BP-2L surrounds, Powerfiled 15 subwoofer. Denon AVR-1910 receiver, Denon Blue Ray DBP-1610, Cheap LG 42" 1080p LED, PS3, Roku, Apple TV Gen2 which often airplays from our iOS devices and MBPro.
And the paint samples on the walls which have been there for years. Oh and daughter photo bomb. Surprised one of my two dogs isn't in the pic too as a blur. We wish we had a 50", but I still love these Definitives. I only want a new center someday.

My last home theater picture was back in 2010. A few things have changed since then, so here is the latest. The Martin Logan Prodigy's have moved to the dining room and Klipsch Jubilee horns have taken their place. I have also added a drop down screen and Panasonic PT-AE8000U projector on a motorized mount that drops down from the ceiling to get around the 72" ceiling fan. The Danley DTS-10 has moved to the next room and fires through an opening in the wall behind the curtain on the left.

A rare owner of Ampzilla 2000 power amps. Series I or II? 400W @ 4 Ohm (under rated) powering what, 103 dB speakers? How would you quantify the noise level?
Just my opinion, worth exactly what you paid...I personally thought SOA sounded considerably better than Ampzilla 2000 Series I. Indeed, after I stated as much in person to the late designer James Bongiorno, he said the former had circuit upgrades vs. the latter. Further, those circuit upgrades largely comprise the "Series II" improvements.
I'm thinking no one on planet earth could possibly hear any power difference between 100W vs. 200W on such loudspeaker as yours, but of course I could be wrong.
At least two professionals stated their opinion that the cat's meow was SOA x2, running only one channel of each (not bridgeable because each stereo channel is already fully bridged).
Cosmetic appearance is 100% subjective, but considering the negative response to A2000 and SOA I can't help wishing Bongiorno had employed something different and more widely acceptable. I can't quite think how to qualify the resemblance to Star Trek in the large face plate graphic, except to say it is polarizing, no electrical pun intended.
I suppose Bongiorno's King Kong cartoons on the website was a fitting match to his CES attire such as florescent pink or fucsia suits and alligator shoes. He was extremely generous to me and other assistants at CES.

James and his designs were one of a kind. I got to know him over a decade ago and found him to always be generous.
I use an Electrovoice DX-38 active crossover. The Ampzilla 2000 series I drive the bass bins and a Jamo MPA-101 drive the horns, at present. I roll different amps through for the horns; solid state, tubes, chip amp, etc.. The Ampzilla's, as you would expect for bass, are dynamic and quiet. Before the Klipsch, they drove Martin Logan Prodigy's. Again, here they drove the electrostats with ease and without any noise, I could detect. They were originally put in the system to drive Martin Logan CLS. The best pairing I have heard with CLS.

I only heard Ampzilla drive a limited number of speakers. Still, I got the impression they are as neutral and immune to the load as any amp extant.

I had my subs on a stand (I forget the name of it -- substand?). I thought it helped a bit to lift them off the floor, but the stand also had rubber mounts on which the sub rested and had some insulation/damping material in it. Ha! Found it! I had an older version of this:

Found a cheap Definitive Technology Solo XL to replace them. Cleans up the mantle nicely. Still using the DIY Nakamichi 12 inch sub with 300w BASH amp and Pioneer receiver for this TV area. Logitech remote makes it simple for the whole family to use.

mcgsxr, does mounting the sound bar that high negatively impact sound? Seems like closer to ear level would sound better but maybe aesthetics had something to do with placement above the TV vs. on mantle below.
Are you going to put anything on the mantle of leave it bare?

With kids 8 and 10, I am sure the mantle will be filled with different things monthly. My wife loves to put Xmas stuff all over it, and other seasons sometimes bring other decorations too.
I mounted the bar above the TV primarily to clean up the install visually.
Frankly, neither the 3 small Energy's or the DefTech sound very good. All use small "woofers" and require 100Hz Xover to the sub.
I tried the DefTech on the mantle over the weekend prior to the effort required to remove the TV, mount the soundbar and rehang the TV. It did not sound great on the mantle either.
This is a lifestyle choice, and it sounds vastly better than the Panny speakers, so it delivers a better sound, and visually looks good to me.
The basement combined 2 channel/HT is where I go to listen to good sound. This is just a main floor install that the rest of the family can live with!

This (below pic) was the old house master bedroom system. The TV on the wall and speakers just dominated the room too much. The new room is a little bigger but I opted for the screen that folds into the ceiling and in-ceiling speakers so that it looks like a bedroom at first glance instead of a home theater. I had PVC run in the ceiling of the master bedroom and main systems to get HDMI cables from the components to the projectors.

This is another system I have which I could make into a HT. It has in-ceiling surrounds (as does the office system but I am not using it for now in either system) but I've left it two-channel. I have a modded BDP-83 and may swap the BDP-93 that I have in the master bedroom (so I can play the music files attached to the hard drive - BDP-83 will just take a thumb drive - that way I could move the Teac DAC to another system)

Pretty far from that. But thank you. Audio Research 150.2 on the way with much thanks to wirenut. I'm excited with every little step I take. If anything, I hope seeing what I have, those more fortunate than me will appreciate the things they have like I am. Most of the time. Ha. Everybody has to start somewhere and this is where I am Paradigm monitor 11's, 15" DIY sub, Onkyo TX-NR808, and 50" Panasonic plasma, Sony blue ray. Garage system is marantz 1030 and kef c30's. Everytime I turn either one of these up, I smile and close my eyes.

What is very nice is that tonally they are not so foreign to the SP Tech Continuum center and dedicated Continuum surrounds. The performance of the 20T's as mains (over the Revs) is better, but it speaks huge volumes about how well the Revs compare, given the big MSRP $$ chasm.

I name is Tim I live in Warrenton Missouri as of the last six years but hail from North County in St. Louis.
I I just found out about this website yesterday from a Klipsch forum member who also lives in St. Louis. I'm glad to see there are some people here in the local area who share my habit. I'm relatively new to highER(stress on the ER) end home theater. I have had all sorts of home theaters in a box and piece together numerous systems since I was a young lad, but this is my first try at starting to build a dedicated theater room. I've troll the AVS and Klipsch forum for a few years and learned a lot from those guys on little tips and tricks to help tweak things. This is my first post and I'm kind of fumbling around to find out how things work here. I currently have a Klipsch RF-7ii 7.1 system with a SVS PB12 ultra/2 ran by a B&K 200x7 amp. Yamaha Aventage RX A1010 AVR. Still working with a Mitsubishi 73 inch DLP, just as of recently started looking into projectors and maybe a 2.35:1 screen. From the pictures I've seen you guys have some really cool rooms I hope to have one like that in my basement as well but just one thing at a time at this point. My room is 16 x 23 x 7. I'm about to start putting together the actual room and I am considering doing the back wall behind the speakers in brick to give it that loft look which I will never get in Warrenton :-) do you guys think it will cause too many reflections? I appreciate your time and any help, if I am posting this in the wrong area please forgive me and tell me where to go( be nice) I am a married man so I'm used to that, take care!

All the equipment is on the right side. I use an RF remote to control things. I ran 25 (or 30?) feet of HDMI under the floor, in the ceiling of the basement. I have two wall plates with speaker wire, HDMI, cat6/5e cables. About 35-40 feet total of HDMI cables, running through two HDMI keystone connectors that snap into wall plates. It's a clean installation.
Next, I have to convince the wife to allow me to use some in-wall speakers as surround speakers!

That is the biggest center channel I've ever seen! It must sound great. Someone had said they'd used a VMPS RM40 as a center channel, but I never actually saw a picture of that.

Hi all, I apologize for my absence here for many years. I moved in 2009 and the larger home theater in the new house was put on the back burner for a long time. In the last year I finally got all the home electronics installed, including a fairly extensive Elan G! system, along with a mid-range home theater 7.1 setup, a new 108" drop down screen (buried in the soffit), and a Epson 6030 projector.
Last but not least, I just got around to reinstalling and calibrating the high end audio. Much of the work was delayed by an aquarium upgrade which is now nearly complete. I'm still waiting on a few last items (baseboards and equipment rack disguised as a coffee table) but figured I'd share what I've done so far.
The speaker layout is not really ideal, preferably the main and sub tower positions would be switched. However, it was necessary for aesthetic reasons and to not completely block the in-wall front L & R channels. Also I really didn't want to buy another four sets of speaker cables, the triple harness to the main channels was only 6' long, the subwoofer ones were a bit longer. I channeled the concrete to bury all the cables under the carpet, patching with plaster after wrapping the cables in a lot of plastic. Acoustic panels are placed behind the side and rear walls to limit reflection of higher frequencies; I opted not to do the door for aesthetic reasons.

It took quite a while to remember how to measure the speakers, design the filters, and program the amps. Luckily my old posts were still here, they helped a bit ;) The TacT system is sort of obsolete now, and they are out of business of course, although it still gets the job done well... at some point I will look into other options, but for now I'm just going to enjoy what I have. As a TacT replacement, the Trinnov equipment looks promising. Or I could go back to the factory crossover and perform all room correction on the streaming side using Accurate.
I am using another obsolete piece of equipment, a Slim Devices Transporter, as the source. But I had a Fusion OMS3 media server which has a digital output fed into the Transporter (it also has analog outputs that supply the 16 zone house-wide audio) and will be transferring over to that once I get the Ampheron F-type to BNC adapters I ordered.

The large glass box up front is a 450 gallon reef aquarium in the process of being started up. The room is designed to sit on the couch and listen to music in the near field within a live-end/dead-end setup, while enjoying the tank; or sit in the theater chairs on the upper level and watch a movie using the RBM surround sound system. I've been asked if the big speakers will bother the fish... honestly I don't think so, sound in air doesn't penetrate water very effectively, and even those big sub towers cannot compete with a whale!
There are doors above and below the aquarium for maintenance. Here is a shot of the plumbing below the tank, it is nearing completion. Most of the maintenance is done via an exterior pool bath that I turned into a 'fish room'.

I will show you my (El cheapo) home theater without a room.
It's temporaly until I go back on planet Vietnam or win the lottery jack pot.
The TV is a colour Panasonic 13'' with built-in VHS player and line audio-video input.
It's supplied - included in the rent of the room.
The DVD player is a Sony purchased from Best Buy Montreal, paid 50 CND$ including taxes.
These days it's difficult to find a DVD player with analog outputs.
I don't use the TV built-in amplifier - speaker, sounds like thin can...
I use my Grace Mondo Internet radio with built-in auxiliary input
and miniature headphone output.
I use my 14 years old Sennheiser HD570 headphones.
Other than the Sony DVD (At 50 CND$ from Best Buy)
and the Panasonic TV (Supplied by the owner of the apartment)
I brought from planet Vietnam the headphones and the Internet radio.
You can't argue with me that my home cinema is an El Cheapo set up
but for now, that's only what my budget permit.
I have about 30+ DVD movies, some of which cannot play
because they are copies from planet Vietnam.
Now, you might think that the sound is terrible, well, I was surprised
by the very, very acceptable sound from that set-up.
Very good bass, none agressive sound.
Of course the image on such a TV is only acceptable and temporely.
But for now, it will do the job, which is to kill time
until I get back from where I came.

Kudos to my wife for approving the funky leopard print for some of the panels. My kids love them, and that fabric is much better suited to my cats climbing them.

Well the subject of the thread is room - of course it depends on the space between and around the speakers :roll: I am just not a headphone person anyway. I gave away 3 pairs over the past year (they were just sitting around, including my very old pair of Koss Pro 4AAAs). I've listened to good and expensive headphones while the sound is nice, it is just not my cup of tea. I will give him a '10' for creativity though!

I sold my grouper boat , and no longer need a place to store it.Therefore , the logical next step, would be , to build a room for HT/Audio .I will post pic's of the process.
After reading about room ratio's for way to long, the dimensions are 20x26x10 .
The construction spec's are a compromise based on budgetary constraints. Thanks to all of you for the advise i get from reading this forum.
Mike was probably the primary reason for this, as the first real system i ever heard was at his place.I was stunned with the sound.
Hopefully, the iron will pass inspection the am, and tomorrow the concrete will flow.
I am trying to find vermiculite in florida ,to insulate and soundproof the block and am finding that anything out of the norm is a problem to find!

Thanks Phil.I got an insulation contractor to foam the block.they inject a foam in holes drilled around the building.the r value is not as good, but , the STC IS BETTER.its also 300 less and i don't have to do it.will keep you up with pic's.

This room is music first, HT second. Normally the TV/easel is stored in the closet, but I wheel it out for movie night or when I'm watching sports by my lonesome (yeah, the missus isn't a big fan of the latter). Simple 5.1 setup with the following in play:

Stlrman: Yep, I love Maggies for HT. In a more open room like this, they just sound like a million bucks. I'll spare you the long drawn out "origin story" of how I fell in love with Maggies, and just say that IMO they offer a sense of realism and convey a "texture" to film soundtracks that is very hard to beat. I was sold on them very early on when the little entry level MMGs back in 2006 gave me the physical sensation that I was sitting in a canoe with Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. And yes, Im admitting to watching the Notebook, but I just don't care :lol: It was very subtle...there was water sort of splashing up against the side of the boat that sounded so real that it combined with the large screen image to effectively transport me into the movie with them. My ears just connect with the way Maggies transduce sound and vocals. They seduced me ten years ago and our love affair shows no signs of slowing down :banana piano:
The projector is a Sony VPL45es...I picked it up a few months ago, along with the screen. It's a 125" Reference screen from Elunevision. Im typically more of an audio guy and tend to go cheap on the video side, but I bought this home in July and wanted something a little nicer.

Thanks! I saw one of these at Restoration Hardware and it gave me the idea. What's nice is that it has a wide open space underneath the TV ledge that won't interfere with my center. Plus I can lower it when I want to store it away.

That's a cool story. I never heard of them before my dealer had a pair for me to audition. For some reason they're not very popular in North America. Apparently they're huge in Japan though. Go figure..

Thanks. The speakers are Fusion 8 Alchemy (from DIYsoundgroup) for LRC and Volt-8 LX for rear, Subs are 2 15" Dayton driven by Inuke NU6000DSP. For the screen, I used Elite Sable Fixed Frame but replace the screen with Spandex Milliskin Matte (White) so that I can place the speakers behind the screen. Very nice work. Last fall I finished a couple of UM18s in DIY Sound group boxes, for our HT. I had been driving them with a couple of Crown XLS1500s (each bridged). Recently bought a couple of Inuke 3000s to up the power. Even bought Noctua NF-R8 fans and heat sinks to mod the amps for quieter operation. Then our hot water heater crapped out, so took the amps (luckily still not modified :roll: :D) back to Guitar Center for the cash back. Plan now is to just bite the bullet and save up for some higher wattage Crown Drivecores, no fan mod required.

Thanks. It is a very nice room only partially done.
It's my wife's treadmill, and she only reads while using it. Plus it stores nicely there when folded up. The basket shelf thing isn't there by the left speaker normally either. It's just there temporarily while being sold.

Im in the early stages of converting a room into a theater room (no construction). Just finished painting, tossing up some blackout shades over the windows, cleaning the carpets, and getting ready to install about 16 GIK acoustic panels. The room is about 13x17 with a peaked 15' ceiling. Still trying to decide if I want to just keep it a 5.2 rig for now, or go ahead and just upgrade to an Atmos system. But anyway, here is the room post-painting. The pic looks a bit wonky since it's my first attempt with the panorama feature on the iPhone 6s camera.

Thank you very much. I LOVE my electric blue ZU's. And I painted the outside of the tray ceiling to match them. I am getting a gloss white center and trying to see if RSL will do some gloss white subs. But yeah, wanted some color and finishes to make the room pop but not be distracting while watching movies. It really popped when I had a big Ferarri gloss red ZU Definition center channel. It looked great!

Two channel is still very important to me, so I prefer a pure two channel system that's fed by my HT, rather than just using the HT Front L+R for my 2-channel listening.

Audio Sources are a Linn LP12 that feeds an Audio Alchemy VITB, and a Sony CDP-xa20es.
Those feed an Audio Alchemy DLC with the PS Three power supply upgrade.
The DLC feeds an Audio Alchemy Overture OM-150 with the PS 150-M Upgrade.
And that feeds Anthony Gallo Reference 3.5 speakers.
Video sources are Oppo BDP-83 and a Roku Streaming Stick +.
Those feed an Emotiva UMC-200.
The front out of the UMC-200 feed the DLC, the side and rear surround outs each feed an Audio Alchemy Overture OM-150.
For side and back surrounds I have Sapphire Audio Sat 1000s.
Rear surrounds are Anthony Gallo Strada Signatures.
The Sub-woofer out of the UMC-200 feeds a Dayton Audio SA-1000, which I have feeding the second VC in the Gallo Reference woofers.
Video is projected onto a 110" gray canvas screen by a BenQ HT2050A.
Power for everything but the PJ goes through a Belkin Pure AV-60, connected to a dedicated 20amp circuit.

I'm confused. You said Video is projected onto a 110" gray canvas screen by a BenQ HT2050A.
But that screen appears to block the L/R speakers in the picture. Did you mean "transparent" screen?

The screen is canvas, and only in front of the speakers for movies, for 2-channel listening the screen is up against the ceiling.
Also, the high frequencies get a bump from the EQ in the pre-pro for movies, and I don't feel it impacts the sound greatly.

Some pics of my dedicated, soundproof room. At almost a year to the day I finished the room a pipe break in kitchen destroyed the ceiling. Pain to redo (double drywall with green glue, clip and channel). But back up and running, did a few upgrades while under construction and the room sounds amazing right now.

I'm not keen on in-wall speakers - haven't had much positive results with them and I have plenty of box speakers to chose form in packing from the move last year.

I am still very happy with my Triad InWall Surround (Atmos ceiling mounted) and OnWall Surround speakers. The sound fills my 14' x 17' room and the speakers never call attention to themselves. The Anthem Room Correction, ARC Genesis, nicely evens out each speaker's response. Older Triad speakers used different drivers than the new models and ARC adjusts them to sound similar. New Triad's are expensive ($550 each) but right now there are 7 on eBay (https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1311.R4.TR12.TRC2.A0.H1.Xtriad.TRS0&_nkw=triad+speakers&_sacat=0), $175 each is a fair price, anything less is a great deal. I have the 6 Bronze/4 Surrounds (4 mounted in ceiling, 2 on back wall). The Silver and Gold can go louder (plus cost more) and are for bigger rooms but I have never maxed out or stressed the less expensive Bronze series.
Early Triad Surrounds were Left and Right because they were configured as Di-poles, new Triad's are Bi-poles. Left and Right are easily converted to bi-poles by reversing the polarity on the rear facing driver, the tweeter and front facing driver are in phase. Woofer and tweeter speaker phase can be easily checked using smart phone apps for either Android or Apple:

My first post - please bear with me. I've never posted about my home theater before but it's FINALLY getting to the point where it might be worthy to share with others.
My 7.2.2 Atmos Home Theater
I built a home theater in our basement. The first image shows one of my original drawings – I used Microsoft Visio, and a ton of research when designing the room. I never did install the riser to have tiered seating, but that's still an option. I've since gone with La-Z-Boy reclining love-seats, currently positioned in an "L". And, there's still some trim work that just never got done (yet!).

Because of the small space I went with built-ins for the equipment and the side sub, with rear access, and started with built-ins for DVDs, but the DVD collection has gotten WAY out of hand and I keep adding shelving (which REALLY needs to go). I designed floor to ceiling bass traps into the front corners to help control low frequency energy in the room. I also chose the room's height, width & length ratio to help spread out the room nodes. Acoustic foam panels control first reflections from L & R front. There are also acoustic panels on the front wall behind the screen. The thing I'm probably most proud of is the flat response (+/- 2db, and no phase anomalies in the audible range) from around 17 to 80 Hz, where I cross to the mains. The MiniDSP helped quite a bit with that, though!

All wiring is Monster in-wall that terminates to walls jacks, and I even cut the wires to the speaker groups to be the same length – the 4 side/rear cabling is the same length, the 3 LCR cabling is the same length (OCD, I know). My one regret is the drop ceiling but was a necessity for other reasons. I did have the small black apartment fridge and microwave mentioned in the drawing but have retired those (the fridge made noise).
I have some voice control that I'm still playing with, mainly for powering on and off and selecting inputs, and for lighting control. "Alexa, I want movie" powers on the receiver, the DVD player, the projector, and sets all inputs; "Alexa, lights down" sets lighting to 20%; that kind of thing. I then use the Harmony universal remote to control playback.

This is my DIY passion project (although I did have contractors build, paint and carpet the room, my buddy and I built the riser in his barn). I'm still finalizing everything (adding the sconces, adding additional room treatments), but the speakers are finally complete after I finished building the GR Research subs and surrounds (surrounds were finished and calibrated just over a week ago). I'm still waiting on an Odyssey amplifier and shopping for a good stereo pre-amp to round out the sound equipment for music, and then I'll start shopping Audiophile cables. It already looks and sounds amazing even though it's still a work in progress.
The movie prints are 3" mineral wool acoustic panels (hand-built by a local hobbyist who also built the ceiling panels). Front corner bass traps are 6" mineral wool (from Acoustimac). Front panels behind the speakers are also Acoustimac, 12"x48"x2" (angled slightly upward), 2x Primacoustic Cumulus Broadband Ceiling Corner Traps are at the back of the theater. I have 8x GIK Acoustics QRD diffusers on order for the slanted ceilings and the back wall(s).

I also changed my screen material from a Dove Gray Canvas to White over Black Spandex, image sharpness has dramatically improved as has acoustic transparency

It’s been a few years in the same home theater room. I changed main stereo speakers to Martin Logan Ethos, added Atmos speakers to the ceiling (Atmos wasn’t a thing when the theater was built), and have updated most of the equipment over the years (projector, processor, amps, subs). As you can see in the attached picture, I have also painted the ceiling and side walls darker and added an LED lighting shelf near the ceiling. I added the LED shelf to conceal a new HDMI cable that was required when 4K was introduced. It also worked for routing the Atmos speaker cables.

My dedicated home theater / stereo room is almost complete but I still need to stain the front AV cabinet to match the wood on the main speakers. The room is in my basement and was purpose built to be as symmetrical as possible and sound proofed. Room treatments includes bass traps in the front corners and treatments on the side walls as well as behind the curtains on the front wall.
Special thanks go to Bryan Pape who helped design the room and place the acoustic treatments.

If there was an award for most equipment in a small room you would win hands down. :thumb:
I have been curious if Dolby Atmos and other object orientated decoding algorithms can place sounds in a 3-D space. The side surrounds in my 7.1.4 setup are not located where they should be so 3-D is compromised although I do get nice rear and overhead immersive sounds.
Your sound lab looks like it would be close to a virtual reality chamber.

Hi all.
This topic - circle is not for me.
I see all the home cinema rooms that are hi-tech and hi $ $ $ home cinema rooms.
My set up is inexpense entry level or call it cheap if you want, but I like it a lot.
Anyway, I like looking at all those hi-tech rooms...
