I will soon be launching a new DAC for the Raspberry Pi. It will be called ApplePi DAC.
With the upcoming release I am also looking for reviewers.
If you are interested in reviewing please contact me with the following information:

I'd try to build it, and post there if you have problems.
He doesn't distribute images because of license issues with one of the programs used in Moode.

It seems odd to me that Tim would have been forced to distribute the source code for Debian. I mean, how is that productive in any way? Still, I might try that build script and see how it goes.

There is no headphone option on this DAC. You will need an external amplifier.

I wasn't able to get audio working to a USB DAC though, and in the process of trying to get it working it appears to have damaged itself, as I can no
longer view or set any of the configuration parameters (browser just hangs).
At any rate, Volumio is essentially the same thing isn't it?
(*) Apart from lack of feedback about what was going on and seemingly undocumented login details after the first reboot. FYI the hostname is changed to moode, username is still pi and password is moodeaudio.

Yeah, it would be nice if there was even a short user guide for moode.
FWIW, there is a thread on diyaudio where someone claims the moode sounds better than volumio and roone.
picoreplayer, which is based on the old squeezebox/LMS software, is also supposed to be a good option. I guess you can run both the server and the player sw on a pi, so no need for another machine to run the server.

I got moOde running. What a pain in the ass. I used the image builder utility.
After the utility makes the image and you boot it up it takes about another 2.5 to 3 hours for the software to configure itself.
The progress of the configuration can be monitored via SSH with the following 3 commands:
mosbrief
moslog
moslast
While the configuration is running you cannot do anything else or it will screw it up.
Backing up SD card as this is being typed...

Included will also be a thumb drive with sample Hi-Res tracks.

I highly suggest that folks sign up for the tour to hear this wonderful device.
I spent a good week listening to it and came away extremely impressed with what Leo has done with this DAC hat.
For anyone that is using a Squeezebox Touch or similar unit, they should find this to be an quite an upgrade.
I did compare it to a DAC I built with AK4990 DAC chip and Salas shunt regulators DIY modular DAC (http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=152106.0)
I really could not pick one over the other. The sonic difference was completely dependent on the file being played. I feel both units are very transparent.
For under $250, the combination of a Rpi and the ApplePi DAC board is an outright bargain in today's audio world.
When it is released, I will be buying one.

I forgot to mention that the DAC does have true balanced outputs. Leo sent along a cable with the Mini XLR connectors to standard XLRs. The tone was a bit different from the RCA outputs. This could be from the difference in construction material of the two cables or it could be the fact that the XLR inputs on the amp I was using use electrolytic coupling caps.
However, I did notice a substantial increase in dynamics using the XLR outputs, even with output levels matched.
This is a very well engineered and built DAC. I again suggest folks sign up for the tour and listen yourself.

I have had the Apple Pie for a while and I must say I am really impressed.
I am also impressed with Leo or Orchard Audio. I had some issues with the Ethernet connection that we finally figured has to be my Comcast router. He spent almost two hours on the phone with me.
As all our work failed Leo packed up a Smarti Pi Touch with his DAC board. While this isn't the current tour setup I would hope that it is explored. This configuration would allow the listener to view the current play information with out a smart device. I personally like the set up as I have been hitting random on my music catalog. And it seems I do a lot more of "What is That".
Any way this is a dammed fine budget setup that punches way above it's weight.
I have had a couple friend over and they share my assessment.
I look forward to the finished product.

What is the two pin header (located between the DAC chips and towards the 40 pin header) for?
There is an EEPROM on the ApplePi DAC that stores some information that is required for the device to meet the HAT spec for the Raspberry Pi.
The jumper when installed, will allow you to write to the EEPROM, not recommended unless you know what you are doing. Without the jumper the EEPROM is in write protect mode.

Yes, still need 5.25V power supply. I was just using screen to demonstrate the point. The problem with a 5V supply is that it can be 4.75 to start with, then you factor in voltage drop. Not good. With ApplePi and RasberryPi current draw is 1.75A.

The ApplePi Volume-Clocker allows you add hardware volume control to any RapsberryPi I2S DAC.
Volume is controlled by a potentiometer R15. Volume is adjustable from 0 dB to -127.5dB, in 256 steps.
In addition to HW volume control this board will also remove jitter from the RapsberryPi's I2S signals improving audio quality.
It can be powered externally though it's own micro USB (X6) connector or from the Raspberry Pi. The ApplePi Volume-Clocker cannot back power the Raspberry Pi.

- Dynamic Range: 144 dB (–60-dbFS Input, 20 Hz to fS/2, A-Weighted)

Thank you Leo for sending the DAC, I greatly enjoyed the Apple Pi.
Here are some thoughts. I tested the unit against Sony HAP-Z1S, OPPP 205 and a chinese ES9038PRO balanced DAC.
Speakers: B&W 804S and JBL 4312B
Amplifiers: Hypex NC500 monoblocks (SparkoS class opamp and factory buffer), Lexicon RV-8 (analog pass-through)
Speaker wire: AudioQuest CV8
Source PC: MacBook pro
Here are my initial impressions
The build quality is top notch and I really like the layout.
The unit sound great out of box, very organic, almost neutral and full bodied (compared to ES9038PRO based DACs). The vocals were amazing especially on the JBL 4312B monitors.
The bass sounded bit lean. My experience has been without the right XLR interconnects for Hypex amps, the bass is a hit or miss.
Green PCB would have made the unit gel more nicely with the Raspberry Pi, but I understand using red color as a product differentiator.
My only concern and probably you might get it from many people is the mini XLR connector. I have some very high end XLR interconnect cables that I have found to match very well the amps I use, having the mini XLR connector limits the option.
Its a great value for building something under $200. Selling it as a kit with nice case would be ideal and something that user might prefer.

I was part of the ApplePi tour and want to share my impressions of this DAC.
HARDWARE
I tested the hat with Rpi 3B, IanCanada IsolatorPi, and Allo Kali. Each board had separate power: I fed the Pi with an iFi iPower and the other three boards each got a GStew modified Jameco linear wall wart. Listening environment was a rather analytical nearfield desktop setup--a Tripath amp into some Axiom 2 way bookshelf speakers, and a humble full-range setup using another Tripath amp with Aura NS3 drivers.
First surprise: This DAC seems to be immune to PSU noise! Other DACs I have tested are all very sensitive and exhibit hum and hiss to some extent, even with an isolator board, Kali, and four separate power supplies with earthed ground rails via John Swenson Ground Tweak. Using these careful measures, I have been able to reduce noise by, say, 95% with the other DACs. But I can still hear a tiny bit near the speaker when music is stopped and I crank the volume knob to max.
In contrast, ApplePi is silent. Even if I float the PSU grounds by unplugging my earth wires from the negative terminals...it stays silent! The other DACs would be intolerably noisy this way. I'm impressed. This could make getting good sound from a Pi a heck of a lot less hassle and expense.
(edit: Since this test I have booted the iPower out of my setup completely, and going completely linear in combo with the IsolatorPi killed noise at the speakers almost 100% for any DAC Hat on my Pi stack )
SOFTWARE
I played music through the ApplePi with both Moode and Volumio. I was not able to get 16/44.1 files to play natively on ApplePi with Volumio, though Leo told me this works for him. It did play 24-bit files quite nicely, but everything in 16-bit I had to upsample...and IME Volumio upsampling sounds sort of lifeless. Thus, I spent most of the time playing my music collection (which is 95% Redbook FLAC) via Moode, which worked flawlessly, natively decoding all bit depths and sample rates I tried.
SOUND
One huge advantage this DAC holds over all others I have tried is the beastly 2.5V output--it just makes both of my amp/speaker combos sing, almost like having a preamp. This results in some of the best, most effortless bass control I have heard in my systems to date. I wish every source component had such gusto. In both my systems, ApplePi made my little flea-powered Tripath amps able to push significantly more air from the woofers without distortion. (Note to self: buy a real amp). IME good gain staging just makes everything downstream happier. Take note: the board gets quite hot. Leo said he has made some revisions to help dissipate heat better with the production boards.
Entering into highly subjective territory, now. My listening impressions parallel my experience with Alex's DIAL_DAC to a great extent...the sound signature shared between the sibling Burr Brown chips is evident. Analytical and smooth at the same time--detailed without harshness. Especially with 24/192 files, transparency is excellent.
I feel that the powerful, controlled bass and detailed treble are the most apparent and expressive parts of the music with the ApplePi. At this point I have to reveal myself as a total sucker for midrange body and warmth. Thus, the ApplePi doesn't push all my buttons...in fact, I'd say it stands in slight contrast to the meatier tonality of the TDA1387 DACs which usually sit atop my Pi stack. Which flavor you'll prefer will surely depend on the other gear in your system as well as your personal taste.

With all the work and running around trying to get the Indiegogo project running, I never had the time to sit down and properly listen to GALA.
Finally got GALA hooked up to my entertainment center, it sound much better than I could have imagined. It's hooked up to a pair of my own custom designed 25W mono-blocks.

I have received a lot of feedback that USB would be a feature people would like to see.
Now GALA is available with USB. You will be able to use it as it it had USB built in.
I am packaging it with a USB to S/Pdif converter. It will support upto 24-bit 192kHz. Performance is unaffected.

You will not need USB with the Blue Sound Node 2. Just connect directly to GALA using the coax out plug. MQA is supported through the Node 2.
GALA's performance is much better than the built in DACs.
130dB vs 110dB for SNR
0.0004% vs 0.005% for THD+N
Computers typically only have USB no spdif.

I’m not sure I understand. I’d like to by pass the Bluesound DAC. So, are you saying mqa unfolding would occur in the Bluesound, then the signal would continue to your DAC, and then to my integrated amp, and mqa is preserved?

Using the Bluesound Node's digital output to an external DAC will provide you with MQA Core (first unfold) decoding. If the external DAC supports MQA rendering then you will get full MQA decoding.

Since in their details it states "Support for upstream MQA decode" I don't think the Gala DAC provides any MQA decoding functionality, but will support MQA Core (the first unfold only) provided from the upstream Bluesound Node's digital output. That would be my understanding, hope it helps!

I think repeating myself, but apparently it only supports MQA Core decoding if that is performed by the server upstream. It doesn't appear to do any MQA decoding or rendering itself, unless they claim otherwise but not from what I see in the details they've provided. Gala should kindly respond to confirm.

In my understanding the Node 2 is already doing full mqa decode. The coaxial output from it will be fully supported by GALA.
GALA only supports SPDIF coaxial input. The Node 2 should be doing what ever is needed to output a signal that is 100% S/Pdif compliant.

I have been reading the Node 2 manual and I am convinced GALA will work with the Node 2's coaxial output.
So this is what you would do:
Node 2 --> coax --> GALA --> power amplifier or powered speakers

This limitation is actually determined by MQA's own design, since the final stage of decoding (also referred to as MQA Rendering) is DAC specific. A digital output cannot provide a fully MQA decoded signal, since the MQA Rendering portion is DAC specific and has to be uniquely implemented for each different DAC. Please don't shoot the messenger! I'm not saying that the GALA DAC won't work from the Node's digital output, only that the resultant output of the GALA DAC will not be fully MQA decoded and will only benefit from MQA Core's first unfold.

I don't think this is correct. Here is a quote directly from the Bluesound website:
"Bluesound Players are a full MQA playback solution. They will decode and render MQA playback up to 24/192. If however you are connecting an external DAC, the maximum output will be 24/96 and MQA processing is not happening in the DAC."
To me that says that it will work but the maximum output will be 24/96.
Also all non MQA content will work no problem.

Yes I agree, but there is something else to consider. GALA's analog performance is way superior to the DAC that is inside the Node 2. So even though with MQA you will be limited to 96kHz. The performance will still be much better than internals DAC's at 192k.

The superiority of the GALA's internal PCM1794A DACs is a valid consideration and is better than the DAC used in the Node. Whether that relative sonic gain for the GALA outperforms the benefit of MQA rendering that the Node's DAC has would be interesting to determine. Regardless of all of this MQA discussion, it still appears to me that the GALA DAC has great potential to provide an exceptional value product in the marketplace.

I have had multiple questions regarding volume control on the unit.
The volume control can be either through the knob on the unit or through software when you control the device remotely.
The HW volume control on the unit (knob) will be better than to the SW one. Both will sound great.

I recently had the good fortune to spend a week listening to a pre-release demo unit of Orchard Audio's PecanPi Streamer that owner, Leo Ayzenshtat, made available on request. Details on his website or earlier in this thread. Most of my music listening over the last couple years has been via Roon (love it!), which is what attracted me to the PecanPi Streamer. In a single small box, it functions as a Roon endpoint, a very high quality DAC, a headphone amp and can operate via ethernet or wireless.
To say the least, I was quite impressed! Based on the excellent PecanPi specs, I was certain it would sound far better than just using my iPhone/iPad as a Roon endpoint and likely a good bit better than using my Squeezebox Touch as DAC and Roon endpoint. No contest on either. Throughout my listening, the PecanPi presentation was laden with immense detail, clarity and depth of soundstage. It's also nice to know that there is a top-quality Squeezebox replacement in a single box. (For me, Roon replaced LMS over 3 years ago when Roon started supporting Squeezeboxes as endpoints).
I've also used a couple more upscale approaches to streaming Roon via their RAAT protocol to improve sound quality whether it be to headphones or speakers in my office. To do so included a Roon endpoint - a Sonore microRendu - along with either an iFi Micro iDSD DAC/Amp or a Schiit Bifrost Multibit DAC . The PecanPi Streamer stood up to these amazingly well, and offered a bit more in certain areas. (caveat: my music, my gear, my 66+ year-old ears ;-) But being able to do so at this pricepoint all within a single box makes the PecanPi a uniquely compelling product.
A bit of background: the Sonore microRendu/iFi iDSD combo has been my go-to kit for headphone listening over the last couple years. Certainly not top-of-the-line, but to these ears, it provides an immersive soundstage with dead quiet background and excellent separation between voices and instruments - a sound quality I've come to know and love. The PecanPi proved to be equally engaging yet with a few significant differences... Foremost, the PecanPi conveyed greater detail & clarity with a highly neutral tonal presentation whereas the microRendu/iDSD leaned to the warmer, richer side. This worked to the benefit of the microRendu/iDSD combo when listening via my Tin Audio T3 IEMs (IEMs known for their neutrality), but the PecanPi was a great match for my Senn HD650 headphones - not surprising given that the HD650s leans slightly toward the warmer side while enabling all the detail and clarity provided by the PecanPi to shine through. Often, the PecanPi seemed to be revealing more of what was going on in the music - fingers on bass strings, piano note decay, hall ambience, etc... Bass notes, in particular, were deep yet well defined. With good recordings, this proved quite mesmerizing, but on lesser quality recordings, not surprisingly, that could turn a bit edgy.
Comparing the Schiit Bifrost Multibit DAC was a bit of apples to oranges since I used an external headphone amp as well when not listening via powered speakers. I also did some of my listening with the Bifrost fed via USB from my computer as well as via the microRendu. But in all cases, the results were similar - the Schiit, like the iFi, seemed to present a more relaxed yet engaging presentation whereas the PecanPi conveyed a more neutral, highly detailed soundstage that, with well recorded music, offered an engaging and immersive musical treat.
Bottom line, I was very impressed with the PecanPi Streamer. The exceptional sound quality is all about the high quality of the PecanPi DAC, no doubt. If you love clarity and detail, this is a no-brainer. The ability to have a top-quality DAC, headphone amp and Roon endpoint in one small box, the ability to use wired or wireless, and a high-quality volume control all make the Streamer a pretty awesome bang-for-the-buck product.

Great review mdconnelly! I am happy to read your subjective review as my assessment of the PecanPi’s objective measurements tell me that this is a 1st class product. There are a few competitors at this price point notably the Allo Katana but I really like what Leo is doing here and want to support the small business owner who engineers great products at a reasonable price.

I just had the great opportunity to spend the last two weeks with Leo's BOSC mono amps and posted my take here:

BOSC quality...
Every BOSC amp is hand-assembled and tested in the USA, by yours truly.
The circuit board (PCB) uses a high-quality dielectric, has a gold finish (ENIG), and is assembled in Eatontown, NJ.
The components all come from high-end semiconductor manufacturers: Texas Instruments; Analog Devices; Murata; Panasonic; and NXP; to name a few.
The output filter inductors use oxygen-free copper (OFC) and are specifically made for Class-D amplifiers.
Even though Orchard Audio is new to the market, I have multiple patents and over a decade of experience in designing audio electronics.
I believe that you will be very happy with both the sound and quality of BOSC amplifiers.

Leo, will you be offering them both ways? I like the original inline design since it allows the amps to be suspended by a short speaker cable from the rear of the speaker or sit sideways between speaker and source. But having all the connectors on the rear presents a cleaner look if exposed and lying flat on a shelf.

Wow! As an owner of three digital to analog music systems - the SOtM Ultra Trio, Allo's Kantana with two TeraDak LPSs, and now Orchard's PecanPi, it is amazing to me just how good the all in one end point units have become. Summary - The PecanPi is a no-brainer purchase for anyone looking to stream hi-resolution music to their stereo system. The Allo Kantana, the unit my PecanPi will now replace, was no slouch and an excellent unit in its own right...but, there are a number of things I like better about the PecanPi.
But before I go into a comparison between the similarly priced Allo Kantana and the PP, I have to disclaim the advantages the Allo Kantana had during this comparison (to an off the shelf PecanPi). a) The Kantana was powered with two TeraDak LPS (which added about $300 to the base cost). The PecanPi was set-up in its base form, which is what Leo recommends. When I bought my Kantana a year ago, purchase of external LPS was highly recommended and I can state 1st hand that the Kantana improved vastly with the addition of each of the two LPS units. The standalone Kantana was lifeless and blurred without LPSs. b) The Kantana was connected with a Kimber KCAG RCA interconnect during the comparison versus the PP equipped with a much less expensive/reviewed LFD RCA interconnect. NOTE: I can hardly wait to hear the PP with its native balanced XLR outputs.
My subjective, comparative impressions (and why I believe the PP is an incredible value):
1) Soundstage - the sound stage thrown by the PP is incredible. Immediately noticeable and quite a benefit if you speakers cannot have optimal placement. With this, the depth of the stage and instrument separation seem to be more precisely placed. The Kantana had what I thought at the time was a great soundstage, but the PP was exceptionally better at this.
2) Ease of listening and midrange delight - the vocals produced by the PP are easy, emotional, and delightful. While the Kantana has its own unique way of producing great sound and range, the PP is just more pleasurable to listen to over extended periods.
3) Ease of set-up and support - this clearly goes to the PP without question. Set-up was simple, well-explained and for the single question that I had for Leo, my answer came within minutes. Allo support was coming from India and whilst it was not bad, it is a world of difference with Orchard Audio. My pontification on this subject is as follows - when one gets into the sub-$500 USD price range, the support for a complex digital component is not set-up to deal with individuals that lack a basic computer skill knowledge and ability to search forums and follow detailed instructions...a point my 26 YO continually reminds me of :). The PP is a unit that I could easily set-up and run. The Allo on the other hand, required considerably different skills and knowledge...that of a 26 YO CS Major.
4) Build Quality - The PP comes in a self-contained steel enclosure that while quite light, is study and substantial when compared to the Allo Kantana's plastic assembly. The Kantana feels fragile, exposed and flimsy by comparison to the PP. The Kantana is quite easily moved around by the weight of the wires and has exposed electronic parts. Both structurally and aesthetically the PP is an 9/10 and the Allo is a 4/10.
5) Accessories - the PP is built with balanced XLR outputs and Orchard provides a pair of his proprietary RCA adapters for those requiring single ended inputs. Balanced is a big plus for me although all my listening to date has been single-ended RCA. Orchard provides a 3.5mm headphone jack for a very modest charge, allowing those who wish to use headphones to connect in.
I am really blown away with the quality, versatility, and sound of Orchard's PP. It is a magnificent leap forward for digital audio and without question a steal at its price.
Please note: I paid for my unit, just like everyone else. My review here was just to provide my personal insights into affordable hi-end audio.
System used to evaluate (because this always comes up) - Roon Nucleaus Server streaming to PP with LFD Spiroflex single-ended interconnects + Allo Kantanta (w/2 TeraDak LPS). The units are connected to an LFD Mk IV SE integrated amplifier connected with LFD Grainless speaker wires to Meadowlark Kestral Hot Rod speakers.

Starkrimson is the only integrated amplifier on the market which uses gallium nitride (GaN) technology. GaN transistors provide the following sonic/sound benefits over their traditional silicon counterparts: less harshness; cleaner highs; better transparency; and higher detail. This is because GaN transistors have increased slew rate, reduced ringing, faster switching, and faster overload recovery.
