And since we are with Michael Karoli today, in 30Sep1973 they had to play hastily at Top of the Pops UK TV Show but as Karoli was in Africa on vacation another guitarist was hired who played well enough and even played bowed guitar, except he could not get his pedals right. LOL

Klaus Schulze Passes Away

Klaus Schulze passes away at age 74 on April 26, 2022.
Pioneer of electronic music released over 60 albums. IMO 'X' was a strong influence towards Trance music, perhaps the first of that genre.

Very sad news, I didnot know about his passing earlier.
I have two cartoon boxes of his vintage albums which come around 40, unfortunately none released in SACD, sound quality was not great in the 1980/90s with digital keyboards and DAT master tape.
RIP

One of Krautrock big questions was why did CAN ended?
I knew from other sources that the guys in the band didn't want to pay the royalties for the songs written by Rosco Gee on the last two CAN albums.

And the songs written by Rosco are really wonderful and he was a very prolific songwriter in CAN, Rebop composed nothing in CAN and died early at 38 on 12Jan1983. Damo Suzuki left the band soon for the same reason but didn't say anything, stayed silent.

Michael Karoli disclosed it in his own way to E&MM in March1983:
https://www.muzines.co.uk/articles/michael-karoli-on-guitar-improvisation/5919
"By the time of the last LP the group had new members who came from a world where a piece is written by one person and the person who has written it gets the credits and the money. Can when it was really Can has always rejected that idea totally. Single characters making their own music was all that was left, and on the last album everybody went their own way, everybody opened up and did things that possibly they wouldn't otherwise have done. I'm just talking about a general feeling, not specific pieces. For instance, on one track I put a short wave radio sound which was later vocoded by the voice — or which later vocoded the voice, whichever you say! — and the whole thing became really personal and all ideas of being commercial were dropped. It was clear by then, Holger having left, that somehow the band didn't exist any more."

As many of you know my favorite Tangerine Dream album is Livemiles. Often overlooked though is side two if you have the LP.
This song starts with a boring introduction that lasts for several minutes before it kicks in. Then we get a beautiful display of polyphonic synth work, which ranks up there with some of the best synth music I've heard. Give it a listen if you can stream it.:inlove:

Great thread! I have been a fan of Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream from the early 70s. Also enjoy Klaus Schulze, Christopher Franke, Paul Haslinger etc. Another German band I liked was Passport (Klaus Doldinger), though they were jazz.

In terms of electronic and ambient music in the style of Krautrock, check out Kit Watkins (http://kitwatkins.com/recordings/index.htm). He was the keyboard player for progressive rock group Happy The Man (HTM). When Peter Gabriel left Genesis, he asked HTM to back him up, but they declined. Kit later joined British prog rock band Camel for a few tours and an album or two. After that, he released many solo works, including quite a few instrumental electronic prog albums and ambient pieces ("tone poems"). His instrumental albums featured unsual time signatures (e.g., 5/4) and used percussion played by Coco Roussel, the drummer from HTM. Kit, who is now 70, has made all his albums available on his website as free downloads.
