The Pioneer Exclusive line are great tables. But both the P3 and the PL70 are very hard to come by in North America. I have looked at Japanese auction sites, but never overcame my reluctance to buy overseas, in a foreign language and different culture.
The Victor TT-81 (or JVC QL-8 with plinth and arm) are almost in that quality range, and the Technics SP-10 MKii is comparable. I'd look at recapping any of these DD vintage tables as the electrolytics are getting pretty old. So figure an extra couple of hundred added to the price.
I totally get the reluctance but my experience with buying from Japan is 10 out of 10 when you find the right seller. You kind of have to dig to find hakana 113 and a couple others but once you do you will be blown away by the condition, packaging, and shipping and the photo's, wait till you see the pictures. The biggest factor is shipping weight. Anything over 30kg. and it is outrageous shipping.
For items like speakers and power amps you are stuck with hifido.jp and even then the shipping price doubles at 30. Usually $200 right at 30kg. and $400 over 30kg. yahoo.jp it is $200 right at 30kg. and $1600 over 30kg. hifido.jp is still pretty good but not quite as good as a select few sellers on yahoo.jp.
Another thing that I think causes reluctance is the 100 volt transformer. Acupwr has changed that in that last few years. Now you can get a low profile, high quality transformer and not break the bank. For something like a high quality record player just their cheapest model will do.
My whole setup is now 1980's Japan mostly.

These 18 components set me back about $13k, and that is just a guess, so quite a budget stretch, but it took me many years to do this. I am a huge believer that you can do some serious damage with $4k and less. In particular with Sausui integrated and preamps that are usually only in Japan and pioneer and micro seiki direct drive record player's and micro seiki belt drive record players that are also usually only in Japan.
