$1 says he's recommending a Yamaha receiver.

Just a thought.

Just a question...  would the Marantz SR6005(refurbished, 2 yr warranty) be worth the $150 extra over the SR5005 for the following features?

Here are the upgrades you get when you buy the SR6005 as compared to the SR5005

1.       10 more watts per channel (110w x7 vs. 100w x 7)
2.       HD radio built in
3.       2 extra HDMI inputs
4.       LCD display on remote
5.       1 extra subwoofer output (2 total)
6.       DC trigger (to trigger a remote screen, etc)
7.       HD Radio
8.       Higher grade Anchor Bay video processing (ABT2015 vs ABT1030 in SR5005)
9.       Higher grade audio components

Thanks,

Randy

#1 Is silly when you're talking about the difference between 100 and 110 watts. I doubt you'd hear the difference.

#5 is worth twice the extra price.....to me.
But then I've been told I like subwoofers too much.

#8 and #9 sounds nice, but to what extent?

The rest don't do anything for me. How 'bout you?

Hey Bob:

I absolutely agree with you on the 10 watt difference.  I basically copied and pasted the differences from another website.  I was more interested in the better Anchor Bay video processing.  However, as Phil A. pointed out to me, I would be better off just using my yet to be purchased Oppo for those duties.

This receiver would be used strictly for movies and maybe Dish Network down the road, along with an Epson 8350 projector to a DIY 120" screen.  $150 is not alot of difference, but on the other hand, it could be used to help buy the Oppo. :thumb:

Sometimes as you move up in an amplifier or receiver line the next model may have a larger transformer or increased power supply capacitance resulting in greater headroom, even though the power output isn't appreciably different.

The weight of these two receivers is within a few ounces of each other, and I would guess the real differentiation is in the feature set.  But marketing wise, manufacturers probably have to be able to quote an increased power output specification in the more expensive model, even if it is marginal, as in this case.

Good points Steve.  I am leaning heavily towards the refurbished SR5005 as I believe Anand did.  If I find I need more power, I could always purchase a used 3 to 5 channel amp.

So did anybody pull the trigger on the Marantz?

I am looking for a replacement for my Denon 3805 in my living room and the Marantz SR5005 and Yamaha 667 are at the top of my list.
