300b vacuum tubes
« on: 8 May 2023, 01:36 am »
just purchased wyetech vacuum tube mono amps that each use 2 300b tubes.  think the tubes are starting to go over the hill.  distorts at moderately high volume on 98 db efficient 16 ohm horn speakers.  reading about 300b tubes and hard to get a feel which brands/ones are reliable, sound great and hopefully not too expensive since would be replacing 4 tubes.  ones of interest include Sophia classic, eml xls (though some have brought up reliability issues), shuguang treasure, genalex gold lion, tj full music, svelana, Elrog, acme (like in wil e coyote).
any experiences with these would be appreciated.
thank you.

I’ve had good results with Genelex Gold Lions and JJ’s in my 8w SET monos. Both a reasonably priced for 300b tubes. What drivers are in your speakers?  Could also be the driver tubes letting go.

Maybe your amp have reached the max power, it may be out of power.

Psvane makes excellent 300b's for a reasonable price.  The WE300b in particular is very good for the money.

Just forget about it and buy the Takatsuki 300b tubes.  Elrog or WE are close in price, but better deal is had with audio.connexion.com for these tubes when available.  The air, dynamics bass and just overall goodness makes these hard to not have.

I’ve been interested in Takatsuki 300b’s and using vintage WE300b now.  Have you compared them to WE300b? Differences?

I don't have any comparison for NOS WE 300b from 80s or earlier. Unfortunately no budget for new issue WE NOS either :(   Just suggesting what is normally available .

My unsolicited opinion is buy the cheapest 300B available.
Spend money where it really counts: input tubes and transformers.
This is a independent opinion:

I use 300B tubes in my Vinnie Rossi LIO which has the DHT module and I've heard significant differences between various tubes.  But my situation is different than what FRM describes as I do not have any input tubes or transformers in my LIO to impact the sound, only the DHT 300B tubes, which probably makes the differences between tubes more apparent.   I've used other triodes in my LIO: 45, px4, 2A3, 101-D but I keep coming back to the Takatsuki 300B because it sounds perfect to me.
