Garbled output from new laptop USB
« on: 4 Jun 2018, 10:56 pm »

I just got a brand new Lenovo laptop and both foobar and Jriver's output to my DAC is highly distorted, garbled and low output. It reads the external HD just fine. When I hook up my 2015 Asus laptop also with W10, it works perfectly fine.

Anyone know what's going on?

What if you use Windows Media Player?

Tried to but couldn't load music into the library.

Go into the device manager and delete the USB drivers then restart the laptop.  Windows will automatically reload the latest version.  Some early versions loaded by the Vendors had a bad USB driver.

I bought it last week and it was manufactured in April.

I agree with Jack D even though your computer is new. Two other thoughts. Were  you using the same usb cable when trying the other computer? You might try downloading iTunes for Windows and see what internet radio sounds like.

Lenovo has notoriously bad driver support.

I bought a Lenovo laptop several years ago but never would again.  It's simply not worth it to save 50 bucks.

Same hardware. I'll try re-loading.

Nope that didn't work. It just downloaded the same drivers again.  :(

Did you tick the checkbox to delete drivers from disk?

YEah I agree it is the drivers.
Not a lot you can do.
Drivers are the small seemingly trivial things that a lot of folks forget actually make everything WORK.
If the drivers they provide do not work. Unless you are an IT genius, you are SOL.
If it is a new computer, return it as not usable. You have a right to return crap that fails to work properly.

There is no checkbox. There is only a list. I just uninstalled it. Windows also says that these are the best drivers for the computer when I tried again and clicked on update drivers.

Have you tried playback without the external DAC, just to confirm the DAC is the issue?

Yeah, it works fine through its own speakers via VLC and JRiver.

I assume that you have tried different USB ports on the machine with the same results?

You could run one of those device driver updater programs such as Driver Max and install the latest version of the driver from the manufacturer to see if it fixes the issue.

It only has two and it won't even recognize the DAC on that one.

I'll look into Driver Max. Thanks.

Have you checked the computer manufacturer's web site to see if there are any software updates ?

Does it have a third party antivirus program running other than Microsoft?

Haven't even used the one on there.

Just did that. Good idea.

Did Driver Max and the 3 USB drivers that are on there are up to date.

You've also confirmed that the settings in Foobar and JR on the new machine match those of the old machine?  Are the driver versions on both machines identical?
