p3esr with ida-8?
« on: 14 Mar 2017, 03:33 pm »
Just got an IDA-9 and very happy with it so far. Does anybody run an ls35/a clone with it? How does it do? Any opinions on the best mini-monitor to match with them?

My 'previous' system is all tubes, SET, 300b, single driver. But back then I owned Rogers ls35/a for 14 (!) years.

TIA...

Try Celsus Sound SP1, passive model.  You can buy it from Audio Advisor or www.sonicunity.com or order from where you bought IDA-8.
It is really good.

I do in fact have this exact pairing and it is fantastic. The SP1 is ported however, while the P3ESR is an acoustic suspension design, so placement of each will be different.

The IDA-8 and P3's  pair great together, though both of those two pieces have preformed well with any other gear i own.  I've had the IDA-8 hooked up the the C7's, 30.1s and P3 all for extended periods of time and have zero complaints.

As far as any other LS3/5A clones go, I don't really like the Spendor's and while the P3 is in the tradition of the 3/5A its moved well past it in my opinion.  Personally i love the speakers for what they are.  The other mini-monitors i would look at would be the  ProAc Response DB1.

What don't you like about the Spendors?

An obvious (and ubiquitous) option is the LS50. I recently spent several weeks with P3ESRs and LS50s back to back - the P3ESRs famous mid-range versus the LS50s better dynamics and frequency extension. I also found the LS50s much easier to integrate with subwoofers.

I guess the best way i could describe it is that they sound too sterile or buttoned up for me.  I do like a few of their speakers, just have not ever been wowed by any of the LS3/5A type models from them.

i have a dda100 powering a pair of linn kan mk1.  the pairing is close to ideal.  linn kan mk1 is a ls3/5a derivative.
