Well, showing my impatience here.  Rather than wait for your responses, I placed an order for a BDP-1 today.  Should be a couple of weeks.  In the meantime, can someone tell me what software I should be downloading to use with it?  I have a MacBook Pro with Lion and a iPad1.  Comments and suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi

Does your CD player Dac do Native high resolution decoding -above 44.1?

James:  Yes, it will do up to 352.8kHz. 24 bit.

Ok great - should work well with the BDP.

James:  I see that you say "native".  I now am not sure based on that.  This is directly from the Supernovas spec sheet:
- Internal upsampling which uses 24-bit/352.8kHz processing.
- Ultra high-perfromance 24-bit BurrBrown PCM1798 DAC/digital filter.

Will this still work?

It will work but as I suspected it upsamples the 44.1 file rather than play a native file at say 96/24 or 192/24.

There are very few Dacs that will play native 192/24 -the BDA is one of course.

Wow...that is what I was afraid of.  I purchased the Supernova for this purpose, because it also had the CDP built in as well as the ability to plug external digital sources into it and utilize its DAC.  Now I fear that I won't be getting any significant improvement over a CD.

Fortunately I think you will find ripped CD's through the BDP will sound better than the CD player direct. I think you will have to think about adding the Bryston BDA Dac at some point in the future if you want to play the new high resolution digital files.

James:

If the incoming signal is already a native 96 kHz or even a 192 kHz signal, isn't the DAC going to just take that signal and upsample it to 352.8 being the maximum ability of the DAC?  I don't quite understand the issue.

Hi

I am not that familiar with your Dac but I assume as you do it will upsample to the highest setting. I have found though that listening to the native file usually sounds better.

I believe the digital input is only good for 44k input, so won't do hi-res.
If you want that, you'll need a new DAC that's capable of that.
The choice is getting larger every day for that.
At present, your DAC is good for ripped and downloaded CDs only

This is directly from Simaudio: "The SuperNova does not use a sample-rate converter circuit (SRC) to convert the incoming data to any pre-defined sampling frequency before D/A conversion.  That said, it will process the data at whatever rate it is sent.  The SuperNova will accept data at 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4
and 192kHz, and process it at those respective frequencies.

That just lost you a sale of a BDA but saved me $2000.  A bit of a relief.  I'll likely get a BDA sometime down the road, but I just wasn't ready to get one at the moment.  Thanks for your feedback.

Correct - you can download 2 apps - MPOD - is free and MPAD - is $2.98. They both work great.

*******
I use MPad with an MPad1 and it works great.  Once you start to use the BDP-1 and iPad, the racks of CDs and CD player will look rather quaint.

I also continue to read some of the Mac mini/music server threads and the angst about which software, USB interface, etc. to use and think who whats that hassle for what is, after all of the work, a kluge.

MPad seems to be a game controlling app of some sort at $.99.  Doesn't quite appear right to me, but perhaps it is.

I ended up downloading MPod and I can't even get beyond the "Connection Setup".  I can't seem to find any explanation on where the connection name, mode, server, etc., that I am supposed to type into the spaces.

Do you have the BDP-1 now?
