Title: Subwoofers with 3.6Rs--front or down firing?
Post by: Waker on 13 Apr 2014, 06:38 pm
I have two REL Strata IIIs, down firing, each 2.5 feet behind each of my Maggies.  There's no room to place them out to the sides in my 11 x 17 room.  The two RELs are for each mono block amp.  If I were to upgrade my subs to newer model RELs, it seems down firing would still be necessary to avoid direct radiation against the backs of the 3.6Rs from a front firing speaker? And, what newer-line RELs do you like?

I use a suggestion I saw in the Mapleshade catalog.

I have a sealed subwoofer on the same plane as the speaker, firing sideways.  Works quite well, apparently couples to modes (or fails to) nicer than other methods.

You should be able to turn the RELs to fire sideways towards the side walls and adjust the distance from the front wall till it works - it is not necessarily going to be in line with the speakers.

Those are good subs, I don't know of anything that will give you an improvement over what you have considering that the smallish/medium space is not a real challenge for a competent sub.
