Title: JC's VMPS Cut or Cuts of the Day
Post by: John Casler on 19 Jul 2010, 06:25 am
Since owning VMPS speakers is virtually a celebration of MUSIC, I thought I might throw out a cut or two every once in a while to suggest a way to celebrate.

Some of these cuts will be nostalgic and others technological masterpieces.

ALL are WORTHY of your VMPS REFERENCE LIST.

The Youtube cut should open in another window and you can enjoy the cut while you read the VMPS Circle. :green:

Here is the first of those cuts:

Anyone with a great system KNOWS this (at the right volume level) is a religious experience.

Jimmy Pages Guitar riffs and Bonham's drumming with Plant vocals is as good as 70's rock gets.

Not only that however, the technical perfection of this cut is wonderful.

And the Classical Classic

This is one of my favorites Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition   (Salzburg 2008 Dudamel)

Turn up your computer System and ROCK OUT.  Wait for the Great Gate of Kiev (about 3:29 into the cut).  Talk about majestic. Rousing...Stirring... :thumb:

Bravo Gustavo!!

Victor Wooten - AMAZING GRACE

For those VMPS Sub and RM owners this is a BASS cut that you must simply get on your Reference Cuts.

There are several versions of this and most are live.  They are either of Wooten himself or with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.

If you have the putty right on your PR's you are gonna die and go to BASS HEAVEN!!!

The textures, the harmonic overtones, and just the range of Dynamics and Frequencies will simply BLOW YOUR MIND :o  Not to mention the talent of Wooten.

You Hughness,

I have heard Eva and I love her, and have her on many of my Reference Cuts and Discs, but even though the McPhee is a poorly recorded YouTube from AI, it still gets my vote for the best as far as how the artist connects to the emotion of the song.

If you have an EVA C that does that well post it so it will be here.

Hi Jim,

I too have that cut on some of my Ref Cuts lists and discs, but I wish I could find McPhee's perfromance on a CD as I think she puts more of herself into it (plus I like pretty females over guys most of the time)

But IZ's performance has generally been in high rotation at CES and THE SHOW for many years and is certainly a Classic.

Thanks for mentioning it.  I bet there is a YouTube. :green:

EDIT: Found it.  The YouTube video is fantastic and exactly the same AudioCut I use.

Hey Chris,

Oh Yeah, that one was coming.  You just beat me to it.

The bass run in the beginning is a very TELLING run to see how good your woofers are.

On many systems either the room or the speakers really "WOOLY" it up too much and bass detail goes out the window.

So since you got it into the mix early, here is the YouTube for those who have not heard it.

Here's a nice number that's worthy of your "VMPS REFERENCE LIST"....a New York group that put out some fine albums from 1974 to 1991....David Byrne, Chris Frantz, Tina Weymouth and Jerry Harrison...better know as Talking Heads.

The track... "Road To Nowhere"....vocal opening, good beat....and you can dance to it...

Hey Ric,

Ya won't find me arguuing that Eva is not "top shelf" Reference Quality.

I DO like emotional connection from the artists and the "goosebump/hair on the back of your neck" moments.

This is the best EVA version I have come across.

Here is an album to cut your "Classical Teeth" on.

The "Little Fugue in G Minor" is BEYOND spectacular :thumb:

It is probably rare now days.  I liked it so much I purchased TWO copies incase one got scratched.  This was in 1976.

I am pretty sure this is the cut.

If you can turn it UP do so. :eyebrows:

The first time I heard this was on a mirror imaged pair of Stacked Dahlquist DQ10s with Stereo Subs and 300wpc CITATION 16's bridged.

I could not beleive my ears.  It starts a little soft and slow, but OH what a Finis.  You have to wait for it!

OK it is time for some of the Best Blues Guitar and one of the best produced audio cuts there is.  It has everything.  The incredible guitar of SRV, a wonderful Bass line, and some clean and clear drumming.

And Stevie is exceptionally "bluesey" to go with his rendition.

Is there anyone who has listened to this cut who has not a CLEAR visual picture of what the song paints in words and music?

I DON'T THINK SO.  For a few minutes you are transported to Tin Pan Alley (the roughest place in town)

It is from the "Couldn't Stand the Weather" CD and NO it is not on some audiophile lable but just a $10 cd (or less) you can get at K-Mart.

Classic Rock Reference Cut

David Crosby

If I Could Only Remember My Name

With guest artists like Grace Slick, Joni Mitchell, Graham Nash, Neil Young, David Frieberg, Steven Stills, Marty Balin, and several others. (I'll pull out my vinyl copy and look)

I purchased this shortly after it was released in like "71", and later saw that Harry Pearson had it on his list of Reference Recordings.

I particulalrly like "Orleans", and "Music is Love", but there isn't a bad cut on this record.  The harmonies are flawless.

MALE VOICE Ref Cut?

Josh Groban

To Where You Are

Here is a Josh Groban Cut that I used for years to test a system for sibilance, bass and distortion.

I seldom listen to it anymore since it was used as the music to the DVD videolog at my father's funeral, but it is still an excellent cut for male voice and system performance.

The key test is the word SMILE at 1:27 into the cut.  If you have your system at Reference Level that word should be clear and pure in a good quality system.

In a bad system it will distort.  I have heard a lot more distortion on this test cut than purity, but it must be played LOUD (Reference or louder)

Oh and the other system test is BASS.  This cut has some exceptional bass, which many NEVER even hear because their systems don't produce it.

And the bass is rich and deep.  :thumb:  Not flabby and whooly  :nono:

You'll know when you hear it.  If you don't then your system is a bit bass shy.

Classic Rock Cut'o the Day

Jimi Hendrix

All along the WatchTower

Another Classic Rock Cut I could play ALL DAY and never tire of.

While Dylan (the writer of the song), Dave Mason, and others have done this cut, I find Hendrix's cut the most gripping and raw.

While most will be listening to Hendrix and his Axe Work and vocals try to listen for the Bass lines and Drumming too.  Both these guys are exceptional for the time.

Man this is fun pulling out all these REF cuts.

The Classic Rock are especially fun since "I was there" for much of that period and it just flowed.

With Woodstock, in the East, Bill Grahm and the Fillmore West, Detroit and MoTown, and Nashville, you had a full menu of incredible and delectable sonic treasures on the domestict front.  When you added that to what was going on in Liverpool, London and the rest of England, it was mind boggling.

Here is one that got a lot of play from San Francisco.

It is from a group call "Its a Beautiful Day", and the cut is WHITE BIRD.

White Bird Video cut (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ovf-UFWL-ng)

This group is a great example of that San Francisco SOUND and the Filmore West.

Jesse Colin Young, The Grateful Dead, Santana, QuickSilver Messenger Service, and who could forget The Jefferson Airplane/Starship, etc all contributed to this sound.

The Lead Singer and Guitarist: Alvin Lee

The cut:  I'd Love to Change the World

And no doubt this guy can ROCK and play that AXE.

While Hendrix and Clapton got loads of accolades, Lee (as you can see from the video below) could really light up a Guitar. :o :o :o :o

Never forget the first viewing/listening of this album.  Visiting a friend who had the biggest Maggies of the era and some Macintosh Monoblocs.  Needless to say it was a MINDBLOWING experience.

I own 5 copies of this work.  One regualr vinyl, one MFSL version, one Japanese pressing, and CD, and an Audiophile remastered CD.

Once I place it on the table or in the tray, I am hooked for the duration.

Can't sleep?

Well how about a well produced Male Vocal track that shows my range in music appreciation.

COUNTRY?????

Yes, this is one of the better produced and recorded Male Voices, and it is of Garth Brooks.  This guy was (and still is) a GOD in Country Music.

How many SUPER GROUPS are/were there?

How many actually have the Name SUPER?

group: SUPERTRAMP

album: Brother Where You Bound

cut: Cannonball

I have been a SuperTramp Fan for many years.  Jazzy, Cool, Smart, Crisp, Driving Beats, great vocals, fun lyrics, are just some of the trademarks of ST.

One of my favorite Vinyl cuts is Cannonball and here is the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuM53PA9aRw)

A few cuts ago, I posted White Bird.

Well here is another song with BIRD in the title, and I might be doing the cut an injustice by calling it just a song.

Some songs just rise to the status of Rock Anthems and this may well be one.

Group; Lynyrd Skynyrd

Cut; Free Bird

This album should come with a Surgeon Generals "Air Guitar" WARNING!!!

These guys (the Van Zants) along with Dickie Betts, Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers, Charlie Daniels of the Charlie Daniels Band, the Marshal Tucker Band, 38 Special (also Van Zants) and a couple other groups made a special niche of Southern Country Rock Groups that just simply wailed in the most fantastic way.

Can't exactly say why, but my favorite Group was and is the Moody Blues.

Something about the combinations of band members, sound, lyrics, use of certain instruments, often employment of classical passages, and even Symphony Orchestras, just seemed to "float my boat" back in the day, and still.

Every Album, and every cut (to me) is reference.

However I might throw out a couple Classical Moody Blues Hits to begin

In keeping with my commitment to REFERENCE SOUND but in this case of the STREAMING kind I will also suggest a couple REFERENCE Internet RADIO Stations.
Here is one that streams at 320k

It is Linn (yes that Linn) out of the UK.

For you Audiophile Geezers like me I bet you remember. . . .

Chip Davis and Mannheim Steamroller  (http://shop.mannheimsteamroller.com/) and the FRESH AIRE Series.

Back in the 70's as I was cutting my "audiophile" teeth, I had some incredible influences.

Absolute Sound and HP

Dahlquist DQ10's and John Dahlquist

CITATION electronics by Lee Kuby of Harman Kardon

And a handfull of Vinyl Sources (many times Direct to Disc) from artists like Harry James, Buddy Rich, Dave Grusin, Thelma Houston, George Benson, and others.

One of these "unlikely" Audiophile groups was Mannheim Steamroller  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mannheim_Steamroller) from Omaha Nebraska, who put out a series called FRESH AIRE.

They were a mixture of Baroque, Classical, Electronica, and quickly became Reference Material for many systems and initially were sold and distributed in Hi Fi Salons on the American Gramaphone label.  They also used some interesting instruments like the harpsichord.

Since that time they are still quite popular but more for their CHRISTMAS CDs.

Here is a cut from the very first ALBUM = Fresh Aire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rl3dX-xeDLE)

Hi John,

Let me throw in my 2 cents for a reference cut: Fritz Reiner conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performing Richard Strauss's Also sparch Zaranthustra -- the opening track.          (http://www.audiocircle.com/image.php?id=35187)

For those unfamiliar this strain was used in the opening scene of "2001 Space Oddessy" where the gorilla like creatures are viewing a sun rising from behind the large black monolith.

Although there is a recent Hybrid SACD version, the original was one of the first dozen or so of classical stereo CD'c issued. It is perhaps a bit noisy, by today's standards but still fantastic by any standard-- especially for a recording half a century old! If it doesn't test your woofers nothing will! It starts out with at very soft 16hz note that increases in frequency and volume until it will rattle your room!

This is a must have.

Paul,

Thanks for the information.  I just ordered it from Amazon with a few other CDs.  I also ordered a more modern Telarc recording of Strauss's Also sparch Zaranthustra.  It should be interesting to compare the two when I get a chance.

Cheers,

Earlier in this thread I mentioned an Album by Thelma Houston.

This is the one I was talking about and I luckily still have a "pristeen" copy.

It was a Direct to Disc German pressing and distributed by Sheffield Labs.

Titled: I Got the MUSIC In Me

It featured: larry carlton, victor feldman, jim keltner, tom scott, etc as Pressure Cooker.

What would any Classic Reference Cut thread be without a little Steely Dan.

Walter Becker (guitar, bass) and Donald Fagen (singer, songwriter, pianist) write, and play some of the best stuff out there.

I'd be hard pressed to find cuts from these guys that "aren't" Reference Caliber.

While there a just so many Genre of music, I find one that generally sounds good on most ANY speaker and system and that is ELECTRONIC. (sometimes called Electronica or Techno for some versions)

Why?  Because it has no "natural, real" absolute sonic reference.  That is it is "un-natural" but can be very pleasing.

It is often encountered in the club/dance scene since it has exceptional ability to supply a driving bass line.

It is also very popular in the "New Age" soothing music crowd so it has breadth.

As well we all know it has been used to a degree with many rock groups as the keyboardists moved from Hammond and Wurlitzer Organs to synthesizers and the like.

One early group who comes to mind as a pioneer in electronic music is a group from Germany called KRAFTWERK, and they are spectacular.

The first Album I heard of theirs was Tour De France, and it was a good one.  Another group that used electronic instruments to a good advantage was VANGELIS, who is best known for his scores for BLADE RUNNER and the opening slo-mo running on the beach scene in Chariots of Fire.

I have found a dual LIVE Album of KRAFTWERK titled Minimum Maximum to be absolutely "EXCEPTIONAL" and reference quality all the way through.  On a good system you will be transorted to various venues around Europe as KRAFTWERK creates a sonic atmosphere/spaitial environment that is truly mesmerizing.  Your full speaker will be called upon to become a "transporter" to the venues.

Just see if you can listen to the Tour De France cut below and not be jumping around in your seat (not just toe tapping, but head bopping and leg jumpin) :banana piano: :singing: :hyper:

Tour De France (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVQIABZVSIU&feature=related)

ELECROKARDIOGRAM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Iy3D7qqXu8&feature=related)

If you like this kind of music, it is hard to find a bad cut.

Also when making that "ROAD TRIP" CD for the car, it is SMOKIN'

I had forgotten all about my Blade Runner CD.  Thanks John.  I enjoy reading about what you highlight here, as they are some of my favorites as well.

I recently came across an excellent sounding prog. rock CD that was completely new to me although it was originally released in 1975.  It is one of those recordings that will completly fill the soundstage from wall to wall and then some.  It is Spartacus by Triumvirat.

As far as electronic music goes, Alan Parsons latest release was of that genre.  It is called A Valid Path and is pure Alan Parsons.  There are hints and ties to his previous work throughout.  It is a powerful recording and a real woofer workout.

Your Hughness,

You should certainly take some of my and others Ref Cut suggestions to the show.

Chances are you will hear a lot of them, as well as NEW ones there.  A good many of them came from being at shows and hearing what people brought in to play in the various rooms.

I will be there "in spririt".  Looking forward to the RMAF reports.

While many have heard Ref Cuts of Celine DION, Diana Krall, Holly Cole, Sarah Brightman, SADE, etc, here is a female vocalist some may not have heard of who Has been in my Reference Rotation for years.

Artist: BASIA

Album: London Warsaw New York

Cut: Cruising for a Bruising (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mdoox0-eGbE)

Basia is not only smoking HOT, she can sing those sultry, jazzy, numbers as good as the best in the world.  Many of her early cuts are about her broken relationship with her band member and co-writer Danny White.

Virtually every cut on every album is Reference Quality.

Lots of Latin European beat and great Sax work.

MORE:

One of my favorites Basia Until You Come back to Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbWtzXuoXI8&feature=related)  In this video you see here former lover, but now partner Danny White playing the piano in his funny little trademark hat.

Well since that late cup of tea is keeping me awake, I may as well add a couple more Ref Cuts of some of my favorite female vocalist.

How about in the same vein of that Latin Beat but with a more domestic SALSA with Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine.

She is another female vocalist who can lay down some tracks that you just can't keep your ears away from once they start flowing.

Artist: Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine

Album:Gloria Estefan - Greatest Hits

Cut: Anything for You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNwC1StGwMI)

Or the jumpin Latin beat of Rhythm Is Gonna Get You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnW5dWCuUjc&feature=related)

What do you get when you put two of my favorite female vocalist together?

Gloria Estefan & Celine Dion Conga  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guMYPbHkXY8&feature=related)

OK, as long as I brought Celine into the mix.

Here is a BIG VMPS Reference Cut.  This is the cut that helped Brian win BEST of SHOW in 2002 with the RM-40s.

He played this cut and had the judges "in tears" during the performance.

I have a pair of those RM40s and have to say that it is one of the most emotionally gripping cuts you can listen to,and even more so if you have recently seen the film and the scene it depicts.

Artist: Celine Dion

Album: Greatest Hits of Celine Dion

Cut: My Heart Will Go On  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saalGKY7ifU)

And not to let anyone think that Celine has the corner on the BEST version of this song.

There are some youngsters HOT  :flame: on her "high" heels.

Here is a young vocalist Charice Pempengco who actually puts more RAW EMOTION into that same Ref Cut than Dion.

What do you think? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDVmIjICMhI&feature=fvw)

This cute little Phillipino Girl has become a YouTube Phenomena and now is on GLEE.  She has a set of pipes and heart to match.

Just look at this video and start looking for her on CD's and Downloads (http://www.youtube.com/user/charice?blend=6&ob=4#p/c/9F75B795FA7C08E8/1/r3jyCf_Id2o).  She is on the same level as Aguilar and Dion and just a teenager.

LOOK OUT!  Kinda funny to notice the difference between hair, make-up, and wardrobe from the first video (up top) and the Album Cover.

If someone doesn't give her bad direction, this girl will be belting some Ref Cuts for some time. :thumb:

Here is here title track of her first Album PYRAMID (http://www.youtube.com/user/charice?blend=6&ob=4) which is a little more "hip hop".

PS:  Okay, I just couldn't leave well enough alone.  I know, I know, it is Ellen Degeneres, but you got to take a look at the video of this girl when she is 15 and her first time in the US.

If you can watch this video  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8fR2jroUxE) and not get connected to the EMOTIONAL POWER this kidoo can pack into her vocals you may not have a pulse.

PSS: You want to see a teenager get the whole of Madison Square Garden to their feet?  Charice duet with Celine Dion "Because You Loved Me" at Madison Square Garden September 15, 2008  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPbzKgZHWHA&feature=related)

A bit off the path again, but if you're looking for higher quality Internet Radio to listen to as you pound the keyboard

LOOK HERE for 192 kbps stations. (http://192kbps.internet-radio-guide.net/)

Here is another that "lists" the bitrate  (http://www.thestreamguide.com/index.php?)

For real fans of the Blade Runner music, in case you missed it, here is the 25th Anniversary edition 3CD Blade Runner soundtrack with previously unreleased music that was used in the movie.

These newly released tracks are stunning in their clarity and show the technology differences between the initial release in June of 1994 and the December 2007 release of the additional material. Link to Amazon

Been a while and I need to catch up with Ref Cuts.

I know many are not into Country, but I am a sucker for a well produced cut with a legendary artist, a great story line, and a video montage.

Here's Willy and "City of New Orleans".  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJMVj04lfyo) (oddly enough about a train, its passengers and crew, and its path)

Talk about CLASSIC ROCK Reference Cuts, how about Chrissie Hinds and The PRETENDERS?

Reviewing a Classical CD from Yarlung today (more about which I will post later) and somehow Chrissy and the PRETENDERS Greatest Hits jumped onto my CD Player.

Just pick anything she/they have done and you are listening to Rock and Roll History.

Is some of it "overproduced"? Maybe yes, maybe no.  They are the standard Guitar, Bass Guitar, Drum, Lead Singer group, and man what a Female Vocalist she is!!!.

Since I am from OHIO, I have a tendency to recognize some of the Buckeye and Mid Western Groups a bit more.

These guys were great and represented some of that RAW Rock'nRoll. :thumb:

Some time ago I wrote a post about a CD from Yarlung Records.  It was one of the "ONLY" well produced and engineered Piano recordings I had ever heard with a Piano that actually imaged like a "life sized" Piano, not some "room sized" Keyboard.

It was this CD of David Fung(http://www.yarlungrecords.com/images/cover_dfthec.jpg)

I also liked the Janaki String Trio (which I now plan on re-visititing)

Bob Attiyeh is a very dedicated and personable fellow and LOVES recording great performances for Audiophiles.

He recently sent me 2 CD's to listen to and it is kind of a funny story.

The CD's are:

1) Inner World
Music by David S. Lefkowitz

and

2) Antonio Lysy at The Broad
Music from Argentina

Which was recently honored with a Latin Grammy Nomination.

So anyhow I recieve both CD's and they came at a very busy time.  I hadn't actually listened to my system in a while and when I did get a chance to quickly run through them, to be quite frank I found them nice recordings, but rather un-involving.

I spent most of the time on the Cellist Lysy CD and while a second run through gave me reasonable appreciation for the engineering quality, I still didn't connect to the music.

Well that changed BIG TIME today.  I was reintroducing my VMPS Subwoofers flanking my RM40s and blending them with the Rm40s.  I found out that I had a HUMMMMMM in my system and tracked it down and removed it.

I then just totally freaked out at how BLACK and QUIET my listening space was now.  I had been hearing this hum (noise) and simply mentally blocking it out while it was making the music BLAHHHHH.

So I spun up the Yarlung Music from Argentina and I was simply knocked out.

Oh the quality of this recording on a well tuned system. :o  From top to bottom you hear sonic pleasures of LIVE performers as good, if not better, than I have EVER heard before.

The Cello is quite a wonderful instrument that has an exceptional range and in the right hands some of the sounds that can be created are truly incredible.

But now that I had solved my NOISE problems and my concious and subconcious were able to melt into the music, I now made the connection and with eyes close had the artist, or artists in front of me performing the most incredible music.

Now aside from Yo Yo Ma, I haven't spent a lot of time with Cello Centric CD's.  And I won't say Lysy plays rings around Yo Yo, but I will say I heard Cellistic sounds and music that I have NOT heard from any previous artist.

And as I mentioned earlier, the miking and engineering here is SECOND TO NONE.

The rich harmonic overtones, from the strings, to the cellos surface, to its resonating body gave this recording a truly special sound.

You combine that with the passion with which Lysy (and the other musicians/particulalrly the pianist) perform and you have CD Magic.

Now I cannot guarantee you will connect with this CD in the same way for many different reasons, as Cello Faire may not be your cup'o tea, but if you are looking for some great classical music to listen to seriously then this could be it.

And I might add that it would also be EXCEPTIONAL to use as backround music for a HIGH CLASS Dinner party too.  It has that Latin Tango type lilt to it.

I don't know how much you can tell from listening to the tracks on your computer, but you can go HERE (http://www.yarlungrecords.com/MCPLAYER/index.html) and take a listen.

This CD is definately included in my "CLASSICAL" Reference Discs.

Maybe not an absolute Reference Cut, but an IMPRESSIVE cut none the less.

My Daughter lives in NY, and I have had occasion to ride the subway and unless you are from a city that has rail travel as a basic means of transportation, or have spent some time on the subways, you might not get the feel for this video.

But, from the band members, to the instruments they have chosen, to the riders who "bop" along with them to the riders who totally ignore them, this is a GREAT video.

Except for all the sunshine streaming through the windows, it is "SO" NY Subway.

Tell me you can listen to it all the way through and not be captured with the exhuberance bringing you to tap your toe, bop your head of even get up and move those bones.

Hell, I'm 62 and I'm all over the place on this cut.

Is this what the world is coming too? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAllFWSl998&feature=player_embedded)

Steve Job's you are "THE MAN".

Yes, there's an APP for that.

Interestingly enough, it looks like the drummer drums in reverse.

That his he uses his RIGHT hand for the snare, and LEFT for the top hat and ride cymbal, which is the opposite of the norm.

Wow John, thank you so much for your post! This is what we live for, and what keeps us going at Yarlung Records.  I've been joking with people who wonder how it is that we are still in business during the recession.  Unlike AIG, we are "Too Small to Fail."  Being a tiny record label (with only two of us working here full time) is truly an advantage right now.

But your comments remind us why we do what we do.  Thank you so much John.

I'm glad you like Antonio Lysy's album too.  We are off to Las Vegas next week.  Hard to believe.  Our first time at anything like the Latin GRAMMY awards.  We'll keep our fingers crossed.  Just being nominated is a great thing, and we will be proud to be in the audience regardless of who wins.

For those of you (like John) who are intelligent fanatics about the size of the soundstage, and the accuracy of the placement of musicians on stage, I should mention a great gizmo we used last weekend for our recording of Rite of Spring and Shostakovich's first symphony at Ambassador Hall in Pasadena.  An additional challenge making a recording in a concert environment is that one doesn't have time to go to a great listening room and check the sound stage, the balance, the tonality, etc.  I've struggled with headphones trying to figure this out on the fly, and I have become fairly adept.  But I great listening room has always been better for me than what I could train myself to hear with headphones.  Here comes the connection to John's point about the size and location of the piano in Evening Conversations:

Elliot Midwood (whom many of you know at Acoustic Image in Studio City) told me about the Smyth headphone amplifier which he saw and heard demonstrated at AES last year.  Stephen Smyth (based in Northern Ireland I think) developed algorithms to give your headphone listening experience a soundstage similar to what one hears listening to a perfectly setup room with stereo playback.  With the Smyth algorithm turned on, one can indeed hear the soundstage, in front of you (not on top of your head) and around to the sides as the music is supposed to be.  I wrote to Stephen and asked if I could borrow a demo set for the weekend, and he said yes.  I met with the local rep, a very nice fellow named Lorr, and he configured the set to my head width and the shape of my ears, such that I did in fact "hear the room" at Acoustic Image.  But I was wearing the headphones.  It worked well in the recording when we had very little time to make adjustments.

This sort of equipment could revolutionize the way we hear audiophile music, especially music we're listening to a digital medium.  If you're interested, look for this company at the next AES convention or audio show.  Definitely worth experiencing.  Here's a link:  http://www.smyth-research.com/products.html
I look forward to using these again in the future.

John, you mention Yo Yo Ma, also a hero of mine.  I'd love to know what you think of his version of Piazzolla's Le Grand Tango, which we also recorded on Antonio's album.  Ma's was my introduction to the piece, and he does a very special job.  Antonio has Argentine blood, however, and I think it makes a difference in the authenticity of the performance.  Ma's version is on his Soul of the Tango album.

And John, if you're becoming a 'cello-ophile in addition to being an audiophile, I should send you Dialoghi, with 'cellist Elinor Frey.  This has become Bob Levi's favorite reference recording apparently.  We chose a very different presentation of the instrument for this album, and I'll be curious to know what you think.  You can also hear some of the tracks here by clicking on the "listen" button:

As long as I have been going to Audio Societies, GTG's, and CES, someone will always pull out the Bella Fleck and the Flectones cut of Flight of the COSMIC HIPPO.

HiFi Tommy laid it on me the first time at a GTG, and I knew I had to have it.

He explained that the Bassist Victor Wooten was the Eric Clapton of the Bass Guitar, and I might have to agree.

This cut will challenge you woofers and your system full spectrum, but the bass can really be a delight if your system is up to it.

Now I am NOT talking about over the top blow your wall out bass, I am talking about sonically textured rich harmonics BASS that must be heard to be appreciated.

Yes indeed! Antonio Lysy at The Broad: Music from Argentina won the Latin GRAMMY award. I can still hardly believe it. We were so happy with the nomination. It felt like a trip to the moon, and now to win is almost inconceivable. Yarlung Records is a tiny label, and this is our first "Latin" album. The album is actually classical music from Argentina, but I guess that makes it "Latin American," even if not "Latin."

We were prepared to congratulate the Assad Brothers, who had two albums in our category. I enjoy and respect them so much, and they're powerful in the industry. I wish you could have seen Jacob's face (Jacob Horowitz is my assistant producer). He was sitting next to Antonio and Antonio's wife Margaret. When our album was announced as the winner, Jacob looked like someone had just removed all the oxygen from the room. The grin that followed stuck on Jacob's face for about three days.

Actually, we are all still grinning, and delighted with the results.

Thank you to so many of you who are Latin Academy members. Your vote made this possible for us. We are grateful, as you can imagine.

And thank you to the rest of you for being so supportive of our little label from the beginning. With enthusiasm like this we'll persevere no matter what happens in the economy.

If you like, you can hear the winning track (Pampas) in its entirety, for free (at least for a few more weeks) on the Yarlung Records website.  Go to www.yarlungrecords.com, scroll down to the album, and click on the "Listen" button.  Open Antonio's folder, and you'll see the track in full, in higher and lower resolutions.  Enjoy!

See? John Casler knows what he's talking about.

Cheers,

Bob.

Dear John,

Thanks so much! And thanks to all of you on this forum for your support.  This has been an amazing week, to say the least.

Some of you have written to me privately asking for images from the awards ceremony.  We don't have any official material yet from the Recording Academy itself, but Antonio's daughter Clara took some fun snapshots I am happy to share with you.

First of all, the entire city of Las Vegas got "dressed up" for the Latin GRAMMYs.  The events were not at the Luxor Hotel, but even the "Magesty of Egypt" welcomed the nominees:

Here is the image on the backdrop, showing our Pampas, by Lalo Schifrin in the lineup:

I'm on the left, Antonio is in the middle, and his son Aidan Lysy, our Yarlung Records Mascot, is in front of Antonio.  My terrific assistant producer Jacob Horowitz is on the right:

Here we are right after Antonio whispered something to me about our next project together:

Some years ago I had an LP by Camerata Lysy Gstaad, which was a string quartet, and the track I liked was Ernst Bloch's 'From Jewish Life'. Unfortunately I don't have the record now but did copy it onto CD and still love it.

A well recorded CD, I think, is Lorna Hunt 'All In One Day'. The only track I can find is 'Piece of My Heart':

Dear Hipper,

This sounds like a wonderful Camerata Lysy LP indeed.  I shall try to find one, and I shall mention it to Antonio.  Thanks for letting me know about it!

Actually, here it is:

Souvenir de Florence.

One day I was listening to the radio and a poem about love by Laurie Lee was being read and in the background was the music from this album by Kurt Atterburg. I found it very moving, so I searched high and low for this music and eventually found it on this record. In addition I borrowed a book of Laurie Lee poems from the library.

I read the poem - it did nothing for me. I listened to the Atterburg music - also nothing. I tried both together but still nothing! Oh well, it was just one of those moments. However the bonus was Bloch's 'Jewish Life'.

Dear Hipper,

Ah! I recognize the recording now, and I'm checking to see if Antonio has the original LP.

This is Antonio's father Alberto, on violin, to whom our album is dedicated.  And on viola is my friend Paul Coletti (absolutely superb) who played for me on Inner World, another one of our Yarlung Records discs.

I love Bloch.  And if you like Jewish Life, you will also love Deep Dreams, on Inner World, which we commissioned from David S. Lefkowitz, who based this work (for 'cello and piano) on three Sephardic themes from 15th century Spain.  Absolutely luscious.

While I tend to listen to more modern Reference Cuts, there are some spectacular cuts from the past simply because they are so talent rich and musical.

This is one of those cuts.

Julie London is well known to those of us in our 60's and her voice is so silky and pure that she deserves to be heard with all the other Divas.

She had her own TV show for a while and was quite popular in the late 50's and 60's.

She was a sultry and smokin hot songstress.

Here is one of her best known tracks:

Artists: Julie London
Cut/Track:  Bye Bye Blackbird (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfANFQOLGKA&feature=player_profilepage)
Album:   This is actually from the laser disc "Julie London Show", with the Bobby Troup Quintet, recorded on May-28-1964 in Japan.

Here is an album with that cut on it:

I'd like to add a track that I've been listening to recently:

Daniel Lanois - Frozen, from his album Belladonna.

This track is instrumental and is mostly pedal steel, bass and drums. I think it's a good test particularly for bass and percussion.

Happy New Year!

While I haven't been aware of Lanois, it seems most of us have heard him and his work with other Super Stars.

"He has released a number of albums of his own work and has produced albums for a wide variety of artists, including Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Peter Gabriel, Emmylou Harris, and Willie Nelson. Lanois is best known in his role as a producer, collaborating with Brian Eno, producing a number of albums for U2, including The Joshua Tree. His work in this capacity has brought him critical acclaim, with more than one of his clients' albums honored with the coveted Grammy Award for album of the year." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Lanois)
Couldn't find a Youtube of Frozen, but here is a "MIX" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLEgjBVtdhE&list=MLGxdCwVVULXcJchqmkjX_AQeOdzy_d64S&playnext=2) of some of his stuff and it sounds like some of it has REF CUTS written all over it.

I first heard of Daniel Lanois through an Emmylou Harris album, Wrecking Ball, which at the time, 1996, was considered a good test for hi-fi. He produced the album.

I love pedal steel and that's why I got the 'Belladonna' album although in the end the only track I really like is 'Frozen'. Here's a review of the album.

Oooops its been a while but I'm still here, and back with another CLASSIC ROCK ref cut.

Artists - Black Sabbath

Cut - IRON MAN (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LjbMVXj0F8)
Man this is one of the classics and I was recently reminded that it has one of the BEST guitar runs of the era, that intermingles with a Drum riff.

How about a Country Western Jazzy/Bluesey/Rock Ref Cut?

Artists: Marshall Tucker Band

Cut: This Old Cowboy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHq87F2fS-s)

Album: Where We ALL Belong

Not sure why I dig this song so much, except it has all the elements of an Old Cowboy Band; Fiddle, Stand up Bass Fiddle, Flute, Drum Kit, Rhythm and Lead Gueeetars, and Cowboy attitude lyrics.

I have both the Vinyl and CD version and it is well recorded with clear and well miked solos.

Get your boots on for this one and Rock Away.

I apologize in advance for the following departure to the "DARK SIDE" depraved as it is, I sometimes give in to the pulsating, hard driving BEAT of this dispicable and totally valueless form of sonic debauchery.

That said, I just hafta stick some of this on the CD/DVD player occasionally to keep everything balanced

Is it talent?  Is it even music?

Makes one wonder if pheromones can be transmitted via sound waves?

I don't know, but I do know I enjoy it at many levels.

Today I played Anonymus Two by Focus, 26 minutes long!

It is a jazzy rock track, no vocals, has loud and quiet passages, aggressive flute, solo bass, solo drums and percussion, plus whole band including organ and guitar. Here's part 1 of 3:

It comes from their album, Focus 3, originally released in 1972 on vinyl as a double album. This album also includes their big hit, Sylvia, some yodelling, a fokish instrumental and a song of sheer beauty - Love Remembered:

My Old Friends "The BEACH BOYS" are putting out a new (retro sound) Single and Album titled "That's Why God Made the Radio".

If this was 1969 it would now be climbing the charts "with a bullet".

They are celebrating their 50th Anniversary (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_581oQjCwnE&feature=relmfu) with a new single and album

It is a nostalgic, retro-sounding sound which may take you back to those days of "cruising the DQ or the A&W" on your local strip in the Chevy, Ford, Mopar, or Pontiac :green:

THAT'S WHY GOD MADE THE RADIO (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGke6pnT1d0)

The exceptional harmonies which are the Beach Boy's signature make this a definate "cut o' the day"  Click on the above and take a listen.  It will be 1969 all over again :thumb:

I have been into AUDIO since about 1968, but my first real pair of Audiophile Speakers were Dahlquist DQ-10's.

Now my previous speakers were Altec Lansing Santiagos (VOT in nice cabinets) and I even had some Rectilinear III's for a short time, but I feel the DQ 10s with their soundstage and imaging were a big move toward my present listening preferences.

How did I find the DQ-10?  I was in a High End Audio Salon browsing, and I hears a glass sliding door open and let out this INCREDIBLE detailed sound, and then it closed.  I was inexorably drawn to that door.  I opened it and went in . . . . . . . . and the rest is history.  I was captured in a DQ10 generated sea of Acoustic Instruments, and dual Harmonies that just simply would not let me go.

I walked out with my first pair of DQ-10s :thumb:

Below is what was playing on that Turntable.

I have posted of this young girl before and think she deserves another mention.

Sorry for recycling, but if you missed her the first time you GOTTA get her Bluray with David Foster (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LudOwY4t_BA)

She may be (arguably) the best female vocalist of our time.

I looked over the cuts before purchasing and thought well it should certainly be "worth it" (4 less than $20)

As you can see from the title, it was not only "worth it" it is the best music buying decision I have made in 20 years.

On this Bluray was not only Charice, but Andrea Boccelli, Katherine MePhee, Josh Groban, Michael Buble, BabyFace, Brian McKnight, Celine Dion, Boz Scaggs, Cheryl Lynn, Blake Shelton, Chaka Khan, and a few more.

I mean this Bluray is an INCREDIBLE, collection of HITS and talent!  I am blown away.

Bocelli and McPhee CLICK (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CHhJpTZrNs&feature=related)

And in case you missed it . . CHARICE Click (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AtMtplJo0Q)

If you have a multichannel Bluray system, this is a MUST HAVE!!!

Well here it is:

Here's on for you John:
       Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream

Each song offers something different.
Can't wait to listen when I get new VMPS speakers.  Still sounds great on the tower IIs.

I think both of those 2 albums are available as DVD-A (I know I have Stupid Dream on DVD-A, and 2 Big Phat Band DVD-A's).

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the new group.  I haven't heard Porcupine Tree before.  I went to You Tube and found a couple cuts from that album.

Sounds like "my style" and I agree it will sound GREAT on a VMPS based system.

HERE is the cut I found (http://youtu.be/QlDSbxCNM68)

Porcupine Tree is one of my favorites.  They (Steve Wilson), although quite young is of the old prog school of rock.  The sounds can be hard driven to melodic.  Steve Wilson has also been out spoken on the increasingly predominant trend to over compress the music we listen to at the mastering phase.  He is the man behind the recent 24/96 remasters of the King Crimson series, as well as others.

OK, OK, OK,

While I might just be in the emotion of the moment, I might nominate this VIDEO TRIBUTE of STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN as in the TOP TEN Rock Videos of ALL TIME.

This was Dec 3 at the Kennedy Center honoring some exceptional artists including LED ZEPPELIN.

The three you see in the video are Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and Jimmy Page, with John Bonham being the deceased Drummer.

Folks this is one of the most incredible moments in ROCK and ROLL History.

Watch what performers START the Performance and how many finish at it's crescendo.

HEART (the Wilson Sisters) joined by Jason Bonham (drummer) John Bonham's son, made this exceptionally SPecial.

Turn It UP!!!  CLICK HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=US&hl=en&client=mv-google&v=JK_DOJa99oo&nomobile=1) and ENJOY

Gotta love having Jason Bonham banging like his dad. Nice! I recently saw Jason's own Led Zepplin tribute band locally and it was AWESOME! If you got goosebumps watching this video then go see Jason. It will give you chills for a week.

John....You are so right about the STH tribute. Absolutely great and from the looks of it, Robert, Jimmy and John loved it too. You could see they were touched.

Wow... WOW!  I was certain I would catch this and didn't set my DVR... and then missed it , only to figure I didn't miss much.

Besides, how could anyone catch the magic Led Zep and also,  what is arguably the No. 1 rock anthem of all time?

Holy Crap! Heart almost matched it!
Who ever picked THEM to cover THAT tune deserves Major Kudos, for they Nailed it!

I'll admit  that I (as well as Plant), had a tear to wipe!

Thanks for posting!

If you have never heard of Gary Hoey ,you should. I suggest the best of Gary Hoey and Ho Ho Hoey (Christmas dbl albumn). Everything he has is super clean and very spacious in sound. On the best of he covers many Classic rock songs so it should be enjoyable for many people....ENJOY!

This cut was just brought to my attention and I have to admit you might LOVE IT or HATE IT.

Since I am a HUGE Andrew Lloyd Weber fan and Like the Phantom of the Opera, this hits me just fine and if you turn this up on a good system it should raise your pulse a bit.

I suppose the reason I have not heard this before is I am not a big Heavy Metal fan, but this works for me.

Artist: NightWish

Album: End of an Era

Cut: The Phantom of the Opera

I was just playing the classic Free - Fire & Water and think the album is a pretty good test for a system.

In particular the bass runs on Mr Big starting around 3.09:

Been way to long, but I came across this Absolutely ROCKING Female Rock Band dressed like Maids and they are called BAND MAID.

Maybe I'm having a midlife crisis (no too late for that), or maybe they remind me of my new Japanese Girlfriend, but anyhow these chicks can ROCK.

They can also PLAY their instruments and Sing.

Heavy Bass Line, Solid Drumming, Shredding Chick on the Guitar and great vocals.  I can't listen to this enough.

Catchy and HARD ROCKIN Tune, not too mention Sexy little outfits.

Sorry, shoot me, but I LIKE'EM.

Thanks a lot John  1 hour later and I have watched the video around 10 times. Song has a nice groove and the singer is certainly easy on the eyes!

One of their other hooks is "Maid in Japan".

Damn Tune is hard to shake, but what the hell, it sounds great so sit back and let it play.

Better late than never, but Thanks John, I really liked that Band Maid video.  They Rock...!!!   :drums: :guitar:   Plus, easy on the eyes!!!   :inlove:

Also, I'd like to add a Cut-of-the-Day, if you don't mind?  My selection, The Struts.  A fairly recent band out of England.  And for fans of Queen, a must listen.  The lead singer of this band, reminds me so much of Freddie Mercury!  He even looks like the offspring of Freddy & Joan Jett!  Queen should be looking this guy up!
