Can I use E80CC in place of 12AU7 in Cornet?  Thanks in advance!

Another similar question for substitution ... there was much talk on tube forums about swapping a 5751 in place of a 12AX7 (after reading Joe's Tube Lore at the Asylum: http://www.audioasylum.com/scripts/d.pl?audio/faq/joes-tubes.html.

But it doesn't work everywhere.

Anyone have luck with this exchange?

If you search on"5751" in this circle, you'll find some comments.  In the end, I preferred the sound of the 12AX7.  I found the 5751 to be a bit dry sounding - not quite as deep in the bass.  But others have liked the 5751.  I didn't notice much difference in gain, but I was using a MM cartridge.

If I remember correctly that is the low noise 12AX7 variant.  I'm using it--works great.  No microphonics, very clean sound.

I started out with NOS GE 5751's in my Cornet.  I loved the mid and highs - just absolutely natural sounding and worked great with my AKSA pre- and amp.  However, there was no bass - no low extension - nothin'.  Could be a gain issue; could be a brand issue, but I swapped them out for Sovtek 12AX7LPS.  They're not quite as smooth in the mids, but the bass is rock solid and rich.

Curves looks good, everything similar except one very important parameter: the Vkh.  E80CC specifies 120V max, not enough for the Cornet design.  The 12AU7 is good for 180V and the 6SN7 for 200V.  You need a really good heater insulation to prevent breakdown.
