Sage advice
« on: 6 Oct 2021, 02:02 pm »
I've been a long time member of REG's audio forum headed by Robert E Greene. He has a great mind. Below is a comment he posted yesterday which I think is wonderful advice.

"One thing that crosses my mind is that
while I am a scientific person, it really
is important to understand that if you
really care about exactly what your audio
system is going to sound like to you,
you have to listen hard for yourself and
in your own environment and after some
time. Your perception will change as
your brain learns how things are happening.
This is a real effect-- it has been demonstrated
seriously. Of course a system that is really
outrageous in physical terms is unlikely
to please. But the more subtle aspects
of the situation are just that, subtle.
If you find something you like and keep
liking, probably you should just stick with it.
Even if something shows up that is
better in measured physical terms.
caution is good-- in practice it may
interact with your room--and with you--
in unexpected ways that are unsatisfying
and never get to sound right.
Good luck!

robert greene has been a longstanding reviewer for many years, many notable reviews that have brought wonderful well respected, now legendary speakers, sources etc to many many people's attention

that said, he, like anyone, can be set in his ways and his beliefs and often has a fairly heavy hand on his discussion board, sometimes it does get tiresome reading the entries as he often insists on having the last word, talks down others with salient points

nonetheless i believe he means well and is certainly well informed on many aspects of music (especially classical) and hifi
