$55 cheap

Anyone heard the Scythe SCA-1000 Kama Bay amp?

TNT reviewed it positively: http://www.tnt-audio.com/ampli/scythe_sda1000_e.html

Distributor site is:
http://www.scythe-usa.com/product/acc/034/sda1000_detail.html

Don't know how cheerful it is, but it's certainly cheap.

I'm wondering about cheap tweaking potential.

I have one driving my patio speakers through an Airport Express.  It is now discontinued, but can still be found here and there.  Mine is model SDA-1100 that looks to be the same.

It has decent RCA jacks and metal binding posts.  It is probably not as good as the more expensive Tripaths like Trends, KingRex, HLLY, etc. (at 2-1/2 times the price), but for the money in a non-critical application like mine, it is pretty cheap and cheerful.

Whether it lends itself to tweaking, I don't know.  I'm sure a good linear power supply couldn't hurt.

And that's the price delivered from Iguana Micro, one of the vendors listed on the Scythe USA site!

Looks like a fun little amp to play with. I've payed more than that for the shipping cost of some of my equipment. That's a steal for something that sounds good(enough).

Cool stuff.

Bob, I agree. The TNT reviewer was positive about this little amp, given its price/performance ratio. Also, it has some nice amenities that most inexpensive t-amps just don't have.

You could do a little tweak by adding a cap across the power supply's - and + line just before it feeds into the amp. I've had good luck with this mod. I preferred it to slab's.

A cap with low loss might be desirable, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know if a low loss factor would be desirable in this context? Or, what value cap?

Oh yeah, almost forgot, this amp is bridgeable to mono.

Happy to share.

I ordered one last night. I'll report on it after I receive it, but I doubt I will be able to add to the TNT article I cited above.

I like to tinker, but I'm pretty much ignorant of things electronic. But, like most people, I won't let my own ignorance stand in my way.

I'm going to have a look at the Kama Bay Amp, now the 1100, for little things I can do to tweak it. Of course, new caps and wire are first up. That's about the limit of my abilities, electronic, soldering and otherwise.

I'll see what I can do with it and report as I go... if I don't forget.
