Freq(s) to adjust L/R Balance?

Setting L/R balance on my preamp I've done while playing pink noise. Is this best way or is there a specific frequency (eg, 1kHz?) which is optimal?

Probably a mono voice track.
I think that is what the old Stereophile Test CD used.
